I'm not a fan of shake cinematography either but I wouldn't say that keeps it from being a great film, don't get me wrong I haven't seen it yet, but I do have high hopes for it, not so much for the hype as just the fact that I find Danny Boyle (The Beach aside) to be a very talented director.

Usual Suspects - ***

Entertaining film noir, I don't think it's the masterpiece many say it is, if only because that twist ending, as awesome as it is, does kinda make you feel cheated, but I guess that was the point. Kevin Spacey is awesome, his performance may be considered hammy by some, but I kind of see it as a homage to old actors in the film noir genre like Cagney and Mitchum. Not a whole lot going on in the character development department, but it's such a compelling story and entertaining film that it's easy not to really care.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - ***

Leonard Nimoy. Can be described with many words. Vulcan, Starfleet Lieutenant, Filmmaker, Poet, Musician, Photographer... Comedian? Star Trek makes an unusual turn towards comedy and actually it's one of the best films in the series.

good job, definitive cautionary comedy. I made some friends/morons watch it a while ago and they moaned about the pace (it IS 40+ years old) but Peter Sellers is utterly priceless. i love this cold war sh*t, it's always gonna be relevant. lav it
Great vocab in this scene- 'pranging', 'preversions'...

I love this movie.
It goes for the cheesy action movie and pulls off so much more.

I just saw 'Control' on youtube. Great stuff. Got a question though..

after Ian passes out on stage for a second time, he feels like crap and is lying on a couch after the gig and his manager is sitting near him. His manager says 'it could be worse, you be the lead singer of the fall'. Why is that a bad thing? Did everyone hate the fall?

adidasss 02-24-2009 05:55 PM

Watching a film like that (or any for that matter) on youtube is a crime. Shame on you.

It was fine audio - I don't see the problem.

And don't you brag about ripping them off torrent?

adidasss 02-24-2009 06:17 PM

I meant the picture and sound quality, not the actual legality of the matter...;)

Here's what David Lynch has to say about it (sort of).

he's right, anyone with an iPhone should be shot.
if i ever actually SAW somebody tittering at Family Guy or playing Tomb Raider 12 on a bus I would punch them. And then steal the phone and sell it. because i'm hard, me

But the depression will hit their families the hardest, what goes around comes around. meanwhile I'm storing up tinned food for the bomb :thumb:

Back on thread really f*cking enjoyed the Wrestler, bit cliche but ultimately satisfying to watch. Of all the Oscar-nominated films I've seen so far it was the least disappointing along with Changeling

saw one of the sequels by accident and it's straight-to-video business. Worse - the monsters were cheapo CG

Ah c'mon. Almost all of the Star Trek films are pretty good, though the first one is just ok and V is pretty damn awful.

Star Trek V was a load of fail.

On a different note, I saw this one a few days ago:

It had it's moments. I just love the music so damn much that I want to watch it again.

hmm. My top three worst Trek films in order of suckiness (it's a word)

1. Nemesis
2. Insurrection (i think thats what it was called)
3. V: Final Frontier

i always wanted them to do a DS9 one... El-P could have done the soundtrack

jackhammer 02-25-2009 07:29 AM

I have never watched a Star Trek film in my life. I'm hoping it will stay that way too :D

Molecules 02-25-2009 07:34 AM

i was a trek kid and must have spent hundreds of pounds on videos, stacks of them. all gone now still. I'd have trouble naming any of the films that arent impenetrable to non-Trekkies

jackhammer 02-25-2009 07:42 AM

SF is one of those genres that I can barely get into and it just doesn't do anything for me. I did have a soft spot for Buck rogers in the 25th Century thoughwhen I was a kid. Although that could have been the female sidekick in tight lycra addling my pre pubescent brain lol

boo boo 02-25-2009 07:52 AM

Sci Fi is certainly one of my favorite genres.

Of all the broad genres. Drama, Comedy, Epic, Sci Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Action, Western, Film Noir, Musical, I love em all when done right.

If theres one I'm not terribly into it's romantic comedy. Woody Allen and Norman Jewison films are the exception to the rule. Though I also really liked When Harry met Sally and As Good as it Gets. And Lost in Translation but that's more like an anti-romantic comedy.

yeah but sci-fi crossovers are so much more interesting - the Aliens and Terminators of this world. There haven't been any really good, mind-blowingly original sci-fi canons conceived recently, everything you see points to Star Wars, the Alien sci-fi/horror thing, Terminator sci-fi/action

new Terminator film looks pants from the trailer aswell. Common playing the token black sidekick. jesus christ

with you on romcoms, I think it's cause the genre is dominated by this fluff that's cynically marketed to women who know nothing about films and deny reality... that factory-line chick-flick bullsh*t

For sure. Stuff that has elements of Sci- fi I really like but stuff that is almost exclusively set in space rarely does it for me but then Westerns and Modern war movies are not amongst my favourites either. I think we both have to agree that 'Primer' was a damn original Sc Fi. such a great movie.

indeed, that recent Danny Boyle one was another enjoyable space film, it suffered from having a distinct 2001-meets-28 Days Later vibe though, it's all just pick n mix

this is interesting but they must be missing alot (Primer!) - count the ones you've seen...

Four and this is definitely missing of the list: The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey (1988). I agree about Sunshine but it looks stunning and it has managed 3 viewings from myself so it can't be that bad!

Which is why the best romantic comedies are always done in a fair and objective way and dosen't take sides in the gender roles. Annie Hall, Moonstruck, It Happened One Night, Philadelphia Story, As Good as it Gets and When Harry Met Sally are excellent romantic comedies because they give an honest portrayal of relationships. And romantic comedies only work when both characters are funny and interesting, that's a fact.

Today romantic comedies are all about this "Men are pigs but keep waiting for that prince charming" BS. They're marketed strictly for women when a good romantic comedy should be enjoyed by anyone that's ever fallen in love or has been in a relationship.

been meaning to see this for time. Really clever if slightly dated PG-13 espionage thriller, great cast. Whenever it threatened to be dragged down in my estimation by that nagging daytime television feeling it charmed me with it's script. It was just good old-fashioned twists, turns and tension and it has made me appreciate Robert Redford. Recognized River Phoenix in a bit part and decided to investigate further...

http://nakedlunchradio.files.wordpre...vate-idaho.jpg

... I really ought to have seen this earlier. Gus Van Sant has done some real pap, but this was better than 'Drugstore Cowboy', 'Good Will Hunting' and 'Gerry' put together. It follows Phoenix's character Mike, a narcoleptic hustler; but the second act randomly detours into Scott's (Reeves in full wood mode) story, which as is turns out is an adaptation of Henry IV, which I've never read, but this injected some lyricism and intrigue into the narrative which was much appreciated. Who doesn't love Shakespeare?
I'm still reeling from R.P's understated performance, what a talent. Sexy as f*ck too.

Nah. My Own Private Idaho is good. But I guess it was just too much of a disorienting experience for me to consider it great.

Of course a lot of Van Sants non hollywood films can be pretty disorienting. But his somber style worked much better with Drugstore Cowboy and Elephant, they weren't as pretentious.

Van Sant is a very talented director, but when he's at his worst.

are you sh*tting me? I loved Drugstore Cowboy until f*cking Burroughs turns up, the only possible reason for having him there was pretentiousness; not to mention Elephant (Elephant, Gerry and Last Days seem to be of their own stylistic canon) which just bleeds contrived controversy. alliteration not intended. That's just my opinion though, I was sucked in to Private Idaho fully aware that I was watching a non-Hollywood Van Sant film and half-expecting to hate it.. I would have been much more confused had I not checked wikipedia about it first, however.

adidasss 02-26-2009 03:14 PM

I think it's pretty much the pinnacle of his work. Drugstore cowboy was just bland, Elephant owes a great deal of its style to Alan Clarke's original short but fails to achieve the same impact and Paranoid park was beautiful to look at but completely ruined by the amateur performances (I guess I place too much importance on acting, one of the reasons why I absolutely hate all but one Bresson film that I've seen). I've never bothered with Gerry and Last days...:\

OT: http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...g?t=1235686778

Campy, sexual and sorta rough, like all Fassbinder's films, but not without its good sides. It was a trip to see it at the theater though...6/10

OH, forgot to mention apropos Phoenix's sexyness, I always think of him when I see Emile Hirsch for some reason, they both have that natural, James Dean-like sexual vibe...
