Sometimes we forget how insanely lucky we are in the first world. A documentary shot in 2004, it concerns 'Chimeres'. Street militia acting on behalf of the dictatorship in Tahiti. With this film it's what you DON'T see that is more harrowing.

Saw this at the midnight screening last night. And as being a long time fan of the graphic novel I was a bit skeptical at how they would adapt it to the screen. Although it definitely is not as good as the book it did do it justice, and I thought that they did the best they could. Plus the film is just mind-blowing at how good it looks. It's fantastic go see it.

9/10

sweet_nothing 03-06-2009 03:19 PM

Most of my friends who went to the midnight screening said that it was a let down, because 'all they did was talk about their feelings'.

DeadDinos 03-06-2009 03:28 PM

More importantly, Take a Bow by Muse is in it. Automatic win.

Intriguing to say the least. A little lengthy but the film's structure is excellent.

I've been meaning to see that for ages.

i imagine that's the reaction the producers were gunning for; i think it's totally unnecessary for a film that's set in the 1980's and 40's respectively. I won't be paying to see it in the cinema but from all the press it looks like they have gone to great lengths to duplicate the images in the comic, which will please the all-important demographic of existing fans.

Sounds like your friends never read the book. The story isn't an action story, it's mostly about character.

I'm seeing the Watchmen tomorrow.
For the third time....

I was riding it for a good while but lost it near the end. So I'm not sure if it's genius, meandering or too self indulgent, or maybe all. I think I need to see it sober...

I might be seeing it tomorrow or sunday for the third time with my dad, if he pays for the ticket.

Amazing movie! Went to a tailgate party for the midnight showing at that comic book store, on a school night (thats dedication.) saw it again today. My dad wants to see it, so I'd tag along for the third go.

And I agree, if they didn't talk about their feelings, the movie would have lost all of its amazing characterization.

Pretty good. Kinda cliche but in a good way.

pourmeanother 03-08-2009 03:26 AM

I just watched...

Bottle Shock - interesting/entertaining
Changeling - good
Choke - good
The Go-Getter - meh, good music though, plus Zooey Deschanel and Jena Malone

aModernMyth 03-08-2009 05:27 AM

man... i hated this. The guy in the lead, he was great playing the loveable idiot in Freaks and Geeks but for some reason he got on my nerves in this.
Still it was interesting to see Russell Brand in his *cough* breakthrough role and the Dracula puppet musical was pretty genius

Yea, I didn't care for this much either. The whole movie was predictable and boring.. I kind of wish I could get those few hours back. That Dracula opera was pretty neat though, I'll give it that.

swim 03-08-2009 01:49 PM

Is that the one where they're on a snow lodge in like colorado or something?

Only if you mean 'an island in Hawaii' by 'a snow lodge in colorado.' :P

Sounds about right.

It was swell, the things they changed still made sense and worked. The opening was epic as hell. I would recommend it.

Molecules 03-08-2009 02:19 PM

Thumbs up from raptorchrist? That's honestly all the confirmation i need. *looks for cam stream filmed from under someone's coat*

Surell 03-08-2009 02:21 PM

I'm glad my opinion is actually considered valid.

adidasss 03-08-2009 02:58 PM

So the whole movie wasn't boring and predictable after all...

I thought it was decent, plus it had fucking Veronica Mars and managed to make Mila Kunis almost not annoying. And Brand was kind of cool too.

Okay, you got me, only 90% of the movie was boring and predictable.

Saw Watchmen earlier. I thought it was pretty good. I purposely kept my expectations low for this movie so I enjoyed it. Had I been generally excited, i may not have liked it.

Seventh Seal - ****

Dated in some aspects, the acting can be hella hammy even by 50s standards. But overall this is an incredibly powerful film about the mysteries of god and death.

But maybe a little overrated, Bergman was not a sexist, he was giving complex roles to women at a time when it was rare, but this film does have a rather uncomfortable misogynist vibe to it. The women in this film are depicted as witches, whores and simpletons, I perfectly understand the context of that since this is set in the middle ages when a woman's consent was about as valuable as a mule's.

The film is very inaccurate historically, which is easy to forgive because it's not really a period piece. It could have easly been set during the cold war era when the film was made, and one could easly visualize the film being set in the present, just replace the plague with terrorism, the crusades with Dubya's war in Iraq and the flagellants with the equally crazy religion we have today.

It's dated, mainly the acting and the music, but still highly potent in it's narrative and it's message. And the cinematography is still a marvel to look at. That final shot is especially classic.

Intolerable Cruelty - **

Has it's moments. There's a lot of funny characters, the scenes with the scary old guy are great. But overall it's quite obvious that everyone is just a joke. Clooney and Zeta Jones are good, but it's awfully hard to care about their characters. The film just dosen't have any classic characters, which is a problem because we're talking about the guys who have given us "H.I." McDunnough, Barton Fink, Marge Gunderson, Everett, Pete and Delmar, Walter and The Dude. There's just no such characters in this film to root for. Plus a lot of the humor here is outdated. Adams Rib did this kinda thing 60 years ago and way better.

Really good movie, I think it's Burton's best since Big Fish. Should have been nominated for best picture I say.

I think saying the humor in Intolerable Cruelty is dated is a bit of an unfair criticism. It's supposed to be that way, the movie was intended as an old-fashioned sex comedy.

I agree the opening credits were the best I have ever seen in a film.

(wasn't on a smart arse ting) :D Very apt genre name incidentally. that's what cinema is missing right now, wackiness and lots of stuttering

the Ladykillers remake sucked still, looked like the Coens were losing it there for a minute

I just don't think it was a good fit for the coens. I mean the coens + sexy?

The best things about the film was the kinda stuff that seemed like they came out of another movie, a Coens movie.

The creepy old Jewish guy with the IV that ran the firm, that was some classic Coen, the film just didn't have as much as those moments as their other films.

Those are good points. I certainly agree that it's not one of their better movies but it has its moments. I love that scene in George Clooney's office where Billy Bob Thornton keeps talking over him. Freaking hilarious and definitely classic Coens.

boo boo 03-08-2009 10:05 PM

Idiocracy - **

Has it's moments, there's some funny ideas but the execution is very underwelming and disappointing. This is a very un-subtle and obvious satire. Some of the gags are pretty funny, I liked how every character was named after a food product. But yeah, this is something that probably sounded a lot funnier when written on paper. Tis' a shame, I expected more from Mike Judge.

Judge did this same kind of satire with Beavis and Butthead much much more successfully.
