Oh you with your sarcasm. Mods, feel free to resize it if it's obnoxious

So would anyone be interested in discussing the actual movie?

You do it!

Okay, let's assess the situation: who has a problem with the size and who doesn't?

Fine, I'll do it!

This film couldve been better, but that doesn’t mean it was bad. There were parts during the film I thought 'god how much more longer is this gonna take' and then there were other parts I really loved. Also the soundtrack was great. and the ending made the movie worth the slow parts.

OT: The best years of our lives

A bit longish but probably the definitive film about the aftereffects of WWII ...7/10

Should I check that out?

it was just bland.

it was almost like watching The Fountain. visually arresting, but it's just a drone of a film.

i just didn't give a crap.

Both movies just have this feeling to them that I absolutely love. It's a real gut thing for me for both of them and not the easiest thing to put into words but I'll give it a shot.

The Fountain is almost the cinematic equivalent of a poem. I had a few friends who didn't like it because they found it kind of incoherent but I think they felt that way because they were looking for a comprehensible plot in a movie that isn't about plot. That's the reason I compare it to a poem, it's about motifs and ideas and feeling, not plot. For me it communicated things about the nature of existence that can't really be put into words but really resonated on a deep level with me. Watching it was like meditating and it was the type of movie that I kept thinking about for days after I saw it.

Vanilla Sky is a little easier to explain. First of all I thought it had a cool story with an interesting ending. Secondly, I loved the way every square inch of the movie was stuffed with all kinds of information. It gave it a real layered feeling which I love in a movie. I also, just enjoyed the overall tone of the movie, which was very autumnal if that makes sense. Very introspective and beautiful in the way I've always felt the fall is. The only real complaint I have about Vanilla Sky is the casting. I think having big movie stars in it—I mean Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz specifically—took away from the movie a bit for me. I would've preferred unknowns or least people who weren't quite so famous.

I usually don't trust Blockbuster's seal of approval but this movie was absolutely adorable.

Well, all things considered, it's a reasonable qualm to have.

i was actually thinking about the points you brought up about the movie after i watched it but dismissed them soon afterwards thinking i was trying to overthinking things

so i'm sure itll be a whole different experience next time around

plus, aranofsky directed The Wrestler.... like.... c'mon! there's genius in the fountain, i know it.

Dr_Rez 04-24-2009 12:02 AM

I am so sick of these stupid sequels and prequels coming out today. Garbage!

I still haven't seen The Wrestler but I can't wait to rent it. I love all his other movies.

I think you may have to have a romantic bent to appreciate The Fountain. I'm not saying you don't but it definitely helps. The film doesn't look like anything I have seen before and it may not be perfectly delianated it however is the complete antithesis to the dirge that mainstream Hollywood usually serves up. The music, the cinematography, the sets- it's just a sublime piece of work in my eyes and it's a love story without the sentimental crap that mars many a film.

cardboard adolescent 04-24-2009 04:27 AM

^jh, if you haven't seen southland tales i'd recommend checking it out. unlike anything i've ever seen.

jackhammer 04-24-2009 04:32 AM

I am waiting to see if the longer cut comes out as it was originally about 3 and a half hours long and the DVD is heavily truncated. It's definitely on my list to watch for sure.

cardboard adolescent 04-24-2009 04:35 AM

i'd probably watch it again if they released the longer cut, but i'm worried that the extra material would be superfluous or might remove some interpretive wiggle room. it's still pretty long as it is, and i didn't feel like anything was (unintentionally) missing.

This was not was I was expecting at all and I was pleasantly surprised. It has a slight subversive streak running through it and although the plot was slim, it didn't run into cliched territory thanks to some acute direction. Not bad at all.

Roygbiv 04-24-2009 09:46 AM

that actually looks very interesting

but isn't friday the 13th already the o.c with friday the 13th? i mean, it's already about stupid teenagers.

Yeah, that one was little hard to digest. I was kind of disappointed by it but at the same time I'd like to go back and watch it again.

Considering it was about teens it didn't fall into the usual topless shots and sunkissed body cliches and there is very little gore in it. it certainly wasn't brilliant but as I said-a pleasant surprise.

The night before I re watched this for about the 20th time:

Cheesy classic with a great soundtrack from the Jeff Healy Band. "I thought you'd be bigger!"

Thrice 04-24-2009 05:04 PM

I watched the new Jim Carrey flick last night, and LOVED it. Alot of great actors and funny as hell, I would definently reccomend it. YES MAN

I went to see Fighting today....just for the hell of it and I wasn't disappointed.....it was a campy little fight film......the acting was a bit off and I loved how they filmed most of the scenes with a slight shaky action going on

why is she sharing a towel with that jock? Someone should write a '10 Laws of Airbrushed Movie Posters' or something - protagonist has to look as smug as possible, be in a stupid pose indicative of the plot for even stupider movie-goers, etc... Maybe not. This is my favourite, and I'm sure the movie sucks too

Michael Sheen is great, it's very encouraging to see a 'character actor' (i.e. someone that makes a living acting and not squinting, taking off their shirt and looking into the middle distance for GQ) getting the limelight in these dark times. Great film. Whenever I see Frank Langella now though I just get immediate flashbacks to his full-frontal in Lolita. ech
