I should imagine that he is not a well liked figure in America (Howard Stern) but I love the self effacing humour in this film and I have watched it a few times.

Why would you imagine that? For years he was by far the most popular shock jock in this country.

It was a general observation and I wasn't sure whether he was liked or not so I was playing safe.

I didn't want to be bombarded with hate mail

Yeah, that movie did really well in the US and the book it was based on was a best-seller. He's not as popular now as he once was but he's still pretty big.

I was pretty skeptical because I'm not very big on Williams, but damn good movie, and damn good soundtrack.

I don't like Robin Williams much either--he's tolerable in a few things (Good Morning Vietnam, The Birdcage, The World According to Garp, etc) but never the best part of anything he's in.

However, after reading a review of that ^ movie, I'm sort of curious about it now...

Though you can't deny it's brilliant on a technical level - the visuals were absolutely gorgeous. Exquisite animation, but I felt the plot lacked something for it to be considered a great film. Good film yes, great? No.
