I'm kind of hoping that it doesn't win best picture because if it does, the movie industry will become saturated with musicals. Not really anything against the film itself though.

Did The Witch not make the mark as a 2016 film or something? Zero nominations for what I thought was best film of the year (and probably the past couple of years before it)? Were there not enough black characters?

The Witch wasn't even close to deserving of an award imo. I tried to watch it again and I still have the same opinion that I had the first time. No substance and a complete waste of time.

You're just bad at watching movies. What would your pick be for best picture? Or alternately, what are some films with an abundance of substance?

****, what ever came out last year?

My obvious choice would be Rogue One. I didn't really see many other movies from last year so I can't really make a good call on that one.

What about my edit? Because saying that The Witch has no substance sounds like you either don't understand what you're saying (or maybe the film) or you did not actually watch the movie.

Again, I didn't really see many films last year to make an accurate representation of what had or didn't have substance. All I know is that The Witch felt drawn out and boring. Sorry my opinion isn't the same as yours, but taste is subjective when it comes to movies.

Choose any film from any year that you feel has substance and for bonus points please explain how a film being slow makes it devoid of substance. Maybe you approached the film with the wrong expectations? That seems to be the cause of most negative reviews: expecting a Halloween or Scream level of thrilling horror film when The Witch is more of a drama with horror elements.
