Watched this just now based on your review. Excellent movie of that era. Man, Kubrick had it all even way back then. His camera work and use of lighting, or lack thereof, is pure brilliance.

Hell ya. That long tracking shot down in the trench is amazing. And the ending scene with all of soldiers breaking down in the bar while singing is incredibly moving.

I'm a fan of Kubrick's work, and film noir is probably my favorite film genre along with science fiction. For some reason I hadn't seen that one before and I didn't realize Stanley Kubrick was involved in it until after I watched it. Finding out that he wrote and directed the flick gave an already great movie a bit of an added coolness vibe afterwards.

Just watched Don Hertzfeldt's 16-minute short from 2015 - World of Tomorrow.

It was incredible to see such a profound short coming from the producer of the "My anus is bleeding!" animation, Rejected.



The film took the Jury Prize at Sundance and for good reason - the animation is remarkable, the subject matter existential and impacting, and the story incredibly engrossing.

An instant favorite.



[edit] As a sidenote - I had a disheartening conversation with my fiance last night about worthwhile television series and films I might enjoy. I am, as you know, quite out of the loop on mass media. After dismissing the tired tropes of the situation comedy, I asked if any dramatic series or films featured an INTJ anachistic outsider protagonist and an exploration of society post-Capitalism.

The closest she could get was Mr. Robot, but expressed that, after the pilot, the show quickly descended into familiar tropes, and the focus of the story unraveled from grand societal deterioration to more relatable subplots of love interest and fightclub-esque mental illness.

A quick glance at Hertzfeldt's filmography reveals several similar titles categorized as Psychological Drama, Black Comedy, Surrealism, Abstract Film, Essay Film, and Experimental Film.
