I assume you love the film, what did you love about it?
Considering that Spirited Away has a large basis in Shinto, and considering that many aspects of the fantastical nature of the film never exceed very far from the established world the movie takes place in, and further more many of those elements are there to draw out the themes present in the film.
Also citing LOTR as a fantasy film which you liked the plot doesn't help your point of view considering how many plot holes those films have.

I'm not too sure why we're discussing it to be quite honest, it's not like I'm saying I hate it or consider it to be an average film. It's an extremely well made film, but I didn't find it as engrossing as I could have done. It's cited as one of the best films of the last decade, maybe I was expecting a little more.
But I liked it and I'd probably watch it again some time down the line, but I don't consider it to be a masterpiece or a favourite but it's a very good film.
I'm glad Spirited Away is my entryway into the medium of Anime, I hope to explore it even further.

I still think Princess Mononoke is Ghiblis best. That movie is gobsmacking. Porco Rosso is on T.V this week and I haven't seen it so it's set to record.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988) - IMDb

saw these back to back with some friends last night, Toy Story 3 at a school showing and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 at the theater. both were awesome.

only thing that sucked about that night was how the lock on my car trunk broke. now i have to drive straight home after class tomorrow instead of hanging out with friends so i don't leave the car in danger of getting stolen

It's rare that I can enjoy an adaption like this. Most miss the mark and either take it's source material too seriously or not seriously enough, I think the makers of this film achieved a good balance.

Wow, I actually agree with you on something...(: Howl is in second place, Spirited away 3rd, but I definitely agree it lacks that certain something.

For anyone trying to get into anime (I wouldn't consider myself a fan actually, too much kiddy shit to wade through) I'd agree with Grave of the fireflies, Akira as the golden standard, Ghost in the shell, Ninja Scroll for some blood and guts, ANYTHING by the sadly departed Satoshi Kon (apart from Tokyo godfathers, that's just crap), especially Perfect blue and Magnetic rose segment of Memorizu which is brill, and Vampire D, but that's really it as far as really quality anime films...for grownups that is.... :\

Oh and track down the subbed version of Mononoke the TV show, it's the best thing TV anime has ever had to offer...srsly (nout to do with the film btw).
