I just downloaded the ZSNES emulator, and I'm playing some snes games for the first time. I didn't get into videogames until after the N64 came out, so I've never played any older games. What SNES games would you recommend? So far I have

Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Kirby Superstar
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega man X
Starfox
Super Metroid
Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Also, what Genesis and/or NES emulators would you recommend?

Chrono Trigger may be the most overrated RPG ever. Ironically, its "sequel" (it's not actually a sequel) Chrono Cross may be one of the most underrated. They're both very good, it just struck me as strange.

Incidentally, boo, what do you think is the hardest NES game? A good friend of mine is a huge NES fan and from his enormous collection he says it's Battletoads, hands down.

i'd be inclined to agree on battletoads. it was stupid hard. furthest i ever made it was the stage where you had to outrace a giant saw blade or something like that while navigating a crazy maze on the front half of a motorcycle.

if i remember right it was the 2nd to last level. the only reason i was able to make it even that far was because of a nintendo power magazine with a screencap walkthrough.

'the adventures of bayou billy' would also be a strong contender for toughest NES game too.

TMNT IV: Turtles in Time: The best Ninja Turtles game, and pretty much the best beat em up ever.
Final Fantasy III (Or VI or whatever you want to call it): Almost as gorgeous as Chrono Trigger in terms of graphics, and easly the best of the 2D FF games.
Actraiser: It's a unique cross between a god simulator and a action platformer, and an epic soundtrack.
Fzero and Super Mario Kart: Mode 7 bitch.
Super Castlevania IV: One of my favorite Castlevania games.
Gradius III: Excellent arcade port and the best in the series.
Super Mario World: Like I need to explain.
Yoshi's Island: However there is no good rom of it I can find, not the SNES version anyway.
Donkey Kong Country: Any of them.
Contra III: No Konami code though. )=
Super Street Fighter II: Some prefer Turbo because it's faster, though theres a cheat for speeding up the gameplay in this version. This is my favorite just because Cammy is one of my favorite characters to play.
Secret of Mana: Awesome action RPG with multiplayer, though multiplayer dosen't work on the ZNES, but it's a great single player game too.
Super Mario RPG: A unique blend of RPG and platforming.
Final Fight: It's no Streets of Rage 2 and the multiplayer is gone, but a fun ass beat em up regardless.
Mortal Kombat 2: Easly better than the Genesis version.
Harvest Moon: Worlds best farming sim. =D
Pilotwings: Surprisingly fun and simple flight simulator, not as good as Pilotwings 64 but still fun.
SimCity: Fun city builder.
Super Mario All Stars: Great updates of the NES classics. Never played The Lost Levels? Wish SMB3 had game saves? Then this is the compilation for you.

Gens is a good emulator, you can even play games online with friends which is awesome. Only thing is that you have to create new files just to do game saves.

For the NES, you don't HAVE to download an emulator since there are sites like VNES and Nintendo8bit that run perfectly emulated ROMs right on the web.

But you can't save games or do multiplayer of course. I don't have an NES emulator but here's a link to some of them, with downloads available.

Emuparadise.org - N64, Playstation, Dreamcast, Snes, Genesis, Arcade, Nes, MAME...

If you're ever looking for a GBA or Turbografx16 emu I recommend Virtual Boy Advance and TurboEngine respectively.

Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Sonic & Knuckles: These are obviously essential.
Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3: I've always prefered Shinobi to Ninja Gaiden myself. Amazing soundtracks, some of the most awesome power ups in video game history and some truly epic boss battles make these two games must haves.
Phantasy Star II and IV: Both of these are excellent but if you were to download just one, let it be IV. Easly the best RPG for the Genesis. A compelling storyline, some Anime style cutscenes, a unique sci fi setting and a rockin soundtrack really enhance the experience. These may not have the same visual flare as Square's Super Nintendo RPG's but they are still must plays, especially because theres a lot going on, these games offer over 40 hours of gameplay, so they will keep any RPG fan busy for a long time.
Streets of Rage 2: Easly the best beat em up on the Genesis. 4 unique characters, surprisingly deep controls that allow you to pull off a variety of moves (impressive for a system that only uses 3 controls), beautifully detailed level design and a wonderful techno style soundtrack are just a few of the things that make this a classic. 1 and 3 are good too, but they don't compare to this one.
Gunstar Heroes: I love Contra and all, but I'm gonna go against popular opinion and say that this is the best run n gun ever made. Innovative level design, over a dozen unique customizable weapons, tons of great boss battles and a sweet co op mode make this one a winner.
Earthworm Jim: This game needs no introduction. The SNES version had slightly better graphics. But the Genesis version has a better soundtrack (IMO), smoother controls and an extra level.
Strider: An excellent port of Capcom's underrated arcade classic, a very challenging action platformer where you play a badass Ninja with an oversized sword... IN THE FUTURE. Sweet.
Ristar: Sonic fans will love this one, it was made by the same people behind Sonic. You play a little star like creature who can extend his arms Bionic Commando style. Overall a traditional platformer, but it has some truly brilliant level design. And this is easly one of the best looking games for the system.
Ecco the Dolphin: A very unique game that could best be described as a marine platform adventure. Don't let the Dolphin premise fool you, this is no kiddy game, this game has tons of challenging levels and one of the most horrifying final bosses ever. Levels are huge and vast, with a heavy emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving, and a great soundtrack that makes this game a unique experience.
Castlevania Bloodlines: Among the many classic games in the series, this one stands up well on it's own. The gameplay, graphics and music all rival that of Super Castlevania IV.
Toe Jam & Earl: This game may not look like much if you were just to look at it's screenshots, it's a very unique game that you need to play to really know what it's like. You play one of 2 funky ass aliens trying to repair a spaceship. It's up to you to explore the region and find all the missing pieces. Gameplay is solid, with some sweet power ups. But what really makes this game memorable is it's silly humor and awesome soundtrack. This game is a real blast on multiplayer.
Rocket Knight Adventures: Not all Sonic clones are bad, this is a classic platformer from Konami in which you control Sparkster, a possum in knights armor with a sword that shoots projectiles and a rocket pack. Sweet.
Vectorman 1 & 2: Sega's answer to Donkey Kong Country, these games are among the most impressive in terms of graphics, with gorgeous prerendered 3D sprites and a colorful visual style. Solid gameplay seals the deal though, these are excellent run n gun platformers.
Landstalker: Every system needs a Zelda type game, and Landstalker is one of the best. It puts a rather unique spin on the action adventure formula with it's isometric perspective. Just like Zelda this game has you exploring a big world, with lots of challenging dungeons, with a good story and a nice sense of humor to boot.
Herzog Zwei: One of the first real time strategy games ever made, you control a robot that can transform into a jet, navigating rough terrian, leading armies and fighting alongside them. Oh yeah and there's two player too.
Alien Soldier: Another gem from Treasure Co, this run n gun is similar to Gunstar Heroes in ways, but with tons of cool new moves, like being able to switch between 4 kinds of weapons on the fly as well as being able to teleport and hover in mid air. This game has some pretty nasty boss fights.
Comix Zone: A very unique beat em up that puts you in a comic book world, going from panel to panel, adding an exploration element not common in beat em ups.
Shining Force: One of the pioneers of the tactical RPG genre, if you like the Fire Emblem games then you will surely enjoy this one.
Contra Hard Corps: If you're a Contra fan you definitely need to play this one, it's widely considered to be one of the hardest games in the franchise.
Golden Axe: The graphics and sound may not have aged too well, but this is still a fun game and it's still one of the most challenging beat em ups around.
Mutant League Football: As I brought up a while back, wacky sports games is a genre that needs to be revived. This is one of the best, it's football... With mutants, a lot of crude humor and gore. Sweet.
Kid Chameleon: A suprisingly fun Mario clone, with tons of levels and sweet powerups.
Mega Bomberman: Like I said before, Gens supports multiplayer. What better a choice for multiplayer than Bomberman?

And these are just a few, but I can't go on forever.
