When it comes to board games, Trivial Pursuit is my favourite. In my life, there's been a couple of these places - the first a pub, the other a cafe - where you could come in with your friends, sit down and have a drink (coffee/beer) and play a game of trivial pursuit against your friends.

For those who don't know it, it's a trivia game which basically has you answering questions from different categories like litterature, science, entertainment, history, geography and so on.

Has anyone else ever played Apples to Apples? Now that's a game that can be A LOT of fun if you have friends with very dirty minds.

storymilo 03-04-2010 09:11 PM

I absolutely love Apples To Apples, but it's only fun if you're with the right group. But it can be awesome sometimes.

mr dave 03-05-2010 01:41 AM

anyone a fan of the BSing games like 'malarky' or 'balderdash'? i absolutely love Malarky if you can get a good group.

also, i prefer Scattergories over Scrabble by a landslide for word games.

what's Apples to Apples about?

Been waiting about 4 years for this game and in the couple hours I played it was already well worth the wait. The control scheme is a little more complicated than David Cage's last game, Indigo Prophecy, but I'm sure I'll get use to it. I may need to fix the resolution for the game on my TV because I do have some trouble reading what the responses are which can cause some problems. For example, one of the characters was in a corner store and a mugger came in. I was doing really well identifying with the mugger to get him to leave on his own free will, but instead of pressing the O button with the command "help" I accidentally pressed the square button which was "intimidate" and after an easy quick time event mini game I was able to subdue him. Regardless, the game is delivering on the one key item I look for in any video game and that is a compelling story.

I`ve been following this game and its production developments for quite some time as well and when I get some free time (quite soon) I`m definately going to buy this, as I`m always a big fan of adventure/thriller type games. I know that it has a system of responses as you say that control the development of the game which is something that I like, I first remember seeing this many years ago in the first instalment of Shen-Mue on the Dreamcast.

Of course! I think I might have to buy it since I no longer hang out at pubs and cafès where I can play it. :)

Oh the quick-time events in Heavy Rain are far more complicated than just pressing X not to die. For example, you also play as an FBI agent in the game and I was following a set of clues and came to a muddy hill I had to traverse. In doing so you have to hold onto a series of buttons and if you let go of one of the previous buttons or fail to press the newest requested one, you fall down the hill. After I finally did it, I was pretty much covered head to toe in mud. However I knew all of these things going into the game, it's just taking a while to get use to them.

Most modern games today, have a complex sequence of quick time button pressing, that at times you think you are never going to do, but it always just falls into place, its all part of gameplaying. Apart from that, what other game would you compare it to in style or quality?

frostedone 03-08-2010 01:50 AM

Right now I am playing Aliens Vs. Predator for the PC.

I like it, but I feel that it could have been so much better.

AVP (the 1999 version) and AVP2 were so much better.

Rebellion tried to make the game too modern, like CoD. I miss being able to run without getting out of breath every 4 seconds. Also the weapon selection is so small. Predators get 5 weapons and humans get 5 too. In AVP 99 both species got so much more.

Not being able to crouch is a big strike against the game too.

Also the Aliens wall transition feels so awkward now too, They changed it to mouse 3 instead of shift.

Finally we can't join a game in progress even with dedicated servers and that is a HUGE STRIKE against it. This is the PC version, and with PC games there are some things you just EXPECT. Rebellion's AVP 99 (Now called Classic 2000) was a much fuller experiece despite being over a decade old.

Finished the 1p campaign in the latest Wolfenstein game from 2009 a week or so ago. When I first started on the campaign, I got a pretty bad impression but some more minutes in and the game was actually fun. The quality is generally not very high - the levels are not extremely imaginative, the graphics are not terribly good, the enemies are not very exciting, the weapons are not great - and so on, but somehow it all made for a reasonably good experience overall. It had easy entertainment value and mixing a strong lovecraftish occult theme with nazis certainly has appeal.

Fun if not extremely memorable FPS!

Mario Kart, and Mortal Kombat 4. Brutal Legend because of the soundtrack.

I just beat Assassin's Creed 2 and didn't understand anything that was going on. It was a pretty fun game though.

Mega Man 4, 5, 6 and 7 don't get enough credit.

If people are gonna crap on them for not bringing anything new to the table and running out of ideas for robot masters then fine.

But don't go on to praise the f*ck out of Mega Man 9, which doesn't even follow up on the features introduced in those games, hypocritcal douchebags.

Apparrently there is some "mystery" platform that it will be available for other than the Wii, PS3 and 360. PC maybe? I don't know why they need to keep that a mystery though.

If you keep grinding your teeth like that they're gonna break.

what if they made a genesis version?

Mega Man (as awesome as the games are) easily had some of the worst game art imaginable. Case and point:

I love that Mega Man 9 actually paid homage to the hilariously inaccurate artwork of the first two games.

Anyway, I still need to get this game, it looks bitchin, Mega Man 10 is gonna be pretty hot too. Bass is confirmed to be a playable character, kickass.

Brutal Legend-
very cool. The menu's and aesthetic are really interesting, and the overall presentation is great. But the RTS is kinda hard to get into. I wanna like it, but it just feels way too awkward. Still deserved more attention then it got i think.

Ditto, but for the 360. The option to create a team with your friends and play full 11-11 matches online is fantastic. Unfortunately we aren't too good.

The Live Arcade port of Perfect Dark is what's currently on rotation for me. I didn't play PD on the N64, only the 360 version (which I actually enjoyed), but this is great multiplayer action. I've come to learn that playing as the Alien will only lead to multiple headshots, but dam it he looks so cute in his waistcoat.

Jolly Juggler

Best one from the series so far, really addictive - had me and my workmates battling out against each other all day!

Borderlands, best game ever created. Love it or hate it you will still give at least 24 hours for the game. I'm on my Fifth day.

I was reading an older issue of Game Informer from September 2007 that did it's cover on Borderlands and see what they had going and comparing it to what came out... leaves me a little perplexed. In the previews it seemed like you were working around an actual human settlement. It also showed what the game was originally going to look like before it went all cell shaded (something I won't argue with). Not only that, but it seemed like there was going to be so much more for a single player campaign then what was given. Essentially from the previews it seemed like there was a lot more going for the game than what came out in the end, and that was like 2 years before the game was even released, so it leaves me wondering what the f*ck was going through the development teams head in those 2 years to prompt such a radical change.

5 Creepy Ways Video Games Are Trying to Get You Addicted | Cracked.com

Interesting article, I think these are some of the reasons I tend to prefer older games. Which can be addictive but for more simple (and less scary) reasons.

Old and simple games are addictive primarly because

1. They are fun
2. Their high level of challenge increases your desire to win

This was mostly the case with arcade games for obvious reasons, with console games it didn't matter how much replay value a game had, the costumer has already bought the product and can play for how long he wants before getting another game.

It seems like this article is exclusively about MMORPGs. These kinda games seem ridiculously complicated to me, with them it seems like you can never really buy the product, only rent it, and to keep you paying they have to get you hooked, it's not a game you can take a long break from without either wasting your money or losing your account. It really makes me want to stay clear of these kinda games.

I've started playing Final Fantasy 13, but it really does feel like walking down a long Corridor for some reason.

More so than in, say, Final Fantasy X?

I've read that it's linear, but they always were - more or less. Aside from leveling up on the map, there wasn't usually a lot to do in the ones I played which was outside of the main story. Is number 13 more linear than it's predecessors?

Most Final Fantasy`s that I`ve played over the years have been similiar linear, bloody long and kind of boring, I`ve got to the stage where I don`t really buy them anymore. I think they should try and do what Zelda does and just create one world and use that as a basis etc.

The Final Fantasy series is kind of like the game equivalent to the rock band Chicago, after you`ve listened to the first 15 albums that are numbered Chicago I, Chicago II, Chicago III, Chicago IV etc ...........you just know that things are never going to get any better.

Yeah--apparently even more so than 10. The entire focus of the game is on combat and story; there are, apparently, no towns, no particular sidequests of any real note, all level designs are built around moving forward along an extremely clear and relatively narrowly defined path, it takes about 25 hours before you're even allowed to choose your party members because of story constraints, etc.

The general consensus about it seems to be that, since (presentation values aside) story and combat are what Square always did best in Final Fantasy anyway, trimming everything else away allows them to focus on what it does best and makes for a pretty decent game. But it's definitely not an "RPG" in any normal sense of the word (or acronym, I guess).

I dunno. I've been geeking out about it the past few days, but I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet (I still need to throw down for a PS3 first, which I will do... eventually).
