Haven`t played it yet as I`m always behind playing games (a backlog) but from the reviews in mags and on IGN it gets marks in the high 90`s, so its got to be a classic game.

And Xbox Live.
It's going to be Episodic, too. Meaning this won't be the only part for it.
I can't wait.

I signed up for beta testing like a year ago and had pretty much given up hope until this morning when I was going thru my junk mail and found my invitation code :D

Stupid ps3 has to do a software download before I can play it, says it's gonna be 70 minutes, hopefully it's worth it.
EDIT: It's very fun, but gets hard quickly.

The two dreamcast games were very good (if flawed) but things really did go downhill once the franchise went multi platform. Sonic Heroes was ok but had a lot of issues. Shadow the Hedgehog is quite bad indeed. I thought Secret Rings was very fun (also flawed) though not much replay value. Haven't played the Sonic 06 game but I've heard nothing but terrible things about it.

When I say the franchise is going downhill that's only accounting for the 3D games, the 2D handheld games have stayed consistantly excellent and it pisses me off that everybody overlooks their existence. It goes without saying that Sonic functions better in 2D.

You would be wrong. The Dreamcast and GBA ones are very good also. I haven't played the DS ones but I've heard good about them. And of course Sonic CD (well that was sort of a Genesis game) which is as good as the Genesis games if not better.

Only Sonic 1 was ported to Game Boy Advance and it was a notoriously awful port.

I have a confession to make. I played some Modern Warfare 2 online yesterday and despite sucking horribly at it I enjoyed it immensely.

Ugh.. don't like MW2. It's fun if you don't mind just running around killing everyone (or getting killed by everyone), but I like strategy in my FPS and some kind of objective other than headshots and insane kill/death ratios. That just gets old.

I found that there was a whole lot of strategy that you could employ in the game. It's NOT a game that you can excell at from just running around and shooting sh*t, I was getting my ass kicked by pros.

debaserr 07-23-2010 06:52 PM

in deathmatches its a huge advantage to know the map layouts. i don't really play any games now that i have kicked my wow addiction.

RVCA 07-23-2010 07:17 PM

MW2 blows. I'm 4th prestige with like 10 days playtime, or something redonkulus, and I can safely say it's an awful game that's been completely catered to noobs.

Ok, but, lately I've been playing Super Mario Galaxy 2. I have this rant beginning to form in my head, but I haven't really hashed it out. It has to do with the fact that "world design" has completely slipped in the Galaxy titles. What I mean is, Mario 64 and Sunshine were centered around maps with 8 or so Stars to be acquired. They were complex, well-planned worlds with lots of exploring to do. Completely non-linear.

However, in the Galaxy titles, it's almost as if Nintendo is like "f*ck it, we're tired, let's just go to back to the 8/16-bit days" where map/world progression is completely linear. Each "world" has 2-4 Stars to acquie and MOST of them are honestly just shooting yourself (via star launcher thingy) from one floating rock to the next. It's quite boring, and I'm really unsatisfied with this game.

debaserr 07-23-2010 08:27 PM

10 days of playtime should make you hate any game.

the thing with your galaxy crying is that the games are still ridiculously fun. who the fuck cares if its linear or not. i didn't find it boring at least.

RVCA 07-24-2010 12:08 AM

It's fun, but it could be so much better. Nintendo let me down

That's a really exteme opinion.

And I found it wasn't the case at all, there are things catered to noobs like "noobtubing" but overall the most skilled players determine the victor in team battles.

And Trace is right too many idiots call games terrible just because they overplayed the f*ck out of them and got bored. That happens with any game that you play too much.

Except Star Fox 64, the only game proven to never get boring ever.

So linear = bad?

That's a great way to write off an entire era of platforming right there. I agree that Galaxy was more linear than the first two 3D titles, but it doesn't make it less fun and there is still a hefty amount of exploration, a lot of stars that can only be found by exploring.

I think you're simplfiying the gameplay in an absurd way because there was more to the gameplay of Galaxy 1 than how you put it. And I doubt 2 is any different. I expect the "more of the same" criticism from people but that's what I want because Galaxy went by too quickly for me, but while it lasted it was the most fun platformer I've ever played and IMO superior to Mario 64. If 2 is just a mere expansion of the first game I'm fine with that. Nintendo have been breaking ground with almost every new Mario title for the past 30 years, but it doesn't matter if they start sticking to a successful formula because that's the case with most video game franchises.

If you want sandbox gaming (which quite frankly is overrated) than Mario is not for you. Mario games always have exploration but they're always gonna be linear in a way. Even in 64, obtaining stars meant having to follow a particular path most of the time.

In other words you're criticizing a platformer for functioning like a platforner.

LoathsomePete 07-24-2010 12:21 PM

Right now I'm playing a game called Laby where you have to program an ant to escape a maze. Your goal is to do it using as few lines of code as possible. Right now I'm stuck on how to properly write a "while" loop.

I played the beta last week for one skirmish until my Net decided to not let me finish any others and I have to say the game is amazing. I've been playing Starcraft and Age of Empires since like 1998 and I still suck at both games, however Battle.net has been overhauled to help new players.

@MW2: Trust me, I have been in SO many games where the opposing teams gets a lucky AC130 from a carepackage and wins because of it. Or, games where the opposing team has 3 or 4 people doing nothing but noob tubing. Or, games where the opposing team uses nothing but UMPs and ACRs. Or games where they're all camping in corners with heart beat sensors. Or games where they're all MLC knifing. If these kids who think they're good at MW2 hop into Counterstrike or even Halo, they get murdered, because those games don't have all these unbalanced, unfair, and frankly plain random events.

@Mario: I guess my main problem wasn't really that it's so linear, it's that the levels STINK. Nearly every single level involves landing on a slightly large asteroid, and then finding the star launcher onto the next asteroid, and then launching onto the next asteroid, etc. It's as if Nintendo gets a free pass as far as level design goes.
"Hey guys, I can't think of any ways to expand or improve the current portion of this level."
"So just launch Mario onto another floating rock and start from scratch"

I just miss Delfino Plaza and the Peach's Castle, where the world map itself was grounds for exploration. Then you could pick a level to enter and do an entirely new set of exploration while the level dynamically changed as you acquired more stars.

I don't understand why Sunshine 2 has an aggregate score of 96 (or whatever) on Metacritic; it honestly feels sloppy and unimaginative, especially since it's almost a direct replica, in quite a lot of ways, of the previous game. It even has the same "cleaning robot" minigame where you have to destroy X amount of boxes in X seconds.

Maybe I just need to play it more.

debaserr 07-24-2010 01:06 PM

i strongly disagree with your argument that the levels "stink". i have played to the last world and i was well entertained for most of it. the going from planet to planet thing is just a cool way of getting around to new parts of the level. yes, it is linear, but whatevs. the majority of the gameplay comes from trying to "beating" each little section(this is the level design). did you play the new 2d mario for wii? that is great too. if you want to explore play some rpg or something... like booboo said, platformers aren't well known for having big open spaces to explore.
