Sandbox, to me, means that you do not have to follow a set path on the way to achieving character maximization. It doesn't have to include a system that causes random events or has different results depending on character choices. A model where end-game is not achieved by having to do XYZ.

Never played Skyrim, but when I think of sandbox examples I always go to games like: Minecraft, Star Wars Galaxies, Ultima Online, and The Repopulation (sandbox RPGS), or Rust, H1Z1, Reign of Kings, Don't Starve (sandbox survival).

Currently playing Final Fantasy 1 and Final Fantasy 7. I'm attempting to play all of the Final Fantasy games up to 10, because I never really got the hype. I've already completed 8 (which, in my opinion, is better than 7 so far), and I'm going to do 2 and 9 once I've finished 1 and 7.

I also play Minecraft quite regularly, but I hardly would put it on the same level as anything I would play on a console.

I think people are using the terms "sandbox" and "open world" interchangeably when I think there's a fair amount of difference between them. I think of sandbox games as less about story and more about giving the players what they need to create their own fun. So things like Minecraft, every survival game on Steam, and Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, where the bulk of the fun comes from what the player does to create their own story.

Open world games have advanced to what sandbox games use to be back in the early '00's when Grand Theft Auto III came out. Where it feels like there's two worlds, the "mission world" and the "non-mission world" and you just hop back between them and the open world feels like connective tissue between the two.

Been playing Deadpool again. I played a little bit of it months ago, thought the gameplay was shoddy but serviceable, while everything else was fantabulous, but just ended up dropping it for whatever reason. Mass Effect probably. Now I'm totally hooked. Will write up a full review for my comic book journal when I beat it.

Also making me want to read Daniel Way's Deadpool run, as he's also the writer for the game. I hear mixed things, but I'm juvenile enough that as long as its fun, I'll be satisfied. From what I hear of his characterization though, not to mention Deadpool's character in the game (which, in the context of a game is awesome), I'm going to be at least partially disappointed... aw ****, I'll go into that later.

Whatever the case may be, if you dig DMC, don't require a particularly in-depth combat system, and have the maturity of a a retarded chimpanzee, then this game was made for you.

Gta still plays like that and so does Saint row and Infamous and those games feel like sandbox games not open world ones.

You made a fair point, there is a difference between open world and sandbox games but the difference is a bit muddled sometimes because games nowadays are borrowing gameplay options and structure from other genres.

nowadays is not crazy to have a sandbox game mixed with an rpg with some sim management in there too.
Few genres remain pure, better put, few games are sticking to a specific genre.

The new thing seems to be adding a dating sim aspect to the game. that's taking off big time.

I played that game for awhile, it's no symphony of the night but it's pretty good.

Any particular reason you're bothering to get a 100%?
In symphony of the night its worth it cause it flips the castle upside down but idk if Aria of sorrow rewards you with anything.
