^^^^

Have yet to play either in the series but I have them due to being on sale for quite cheap. Should probably start them soon....

Anyway...

I am a huge Dark Souls fan. I decided to replay III since the new DLC came out recently, and I am having just as much fun as before. This is a perfect example of each pillar of game design, from enemies and environments, to UI and mechanics, the game executes near perfectly. Combat feels fluid and dynamic with each encounter. The bosses are creative and fun, the best boss in the whole trilogy lies in this game. The soundtrack is also phenomenal with plenty of variation and excitement. I can't sing the praises of this game enough. If any of you have yet to try a souls game... Get in on the action because you won't regret it. The games have been built on a reputation of tough difficulty and little to no hand holding. Even if that turns you off I would still give it a shot. This was easily my game of the year last year, against some tough competition.

Think Doom by way of Fallout. ****ed up mutant monster things show up out of nowhere as you make your way through dank, shadowy, Russian subway tunnels (the surface being an irradiated wasteland). It's a full FPS, but with upgradeable weapons and metro stations that are populated by Russian survivors that function as cities and markets, so it's got RPG elements, even if they don't creep into the run-and-gun gameplay.

It's all mission-based, so you're not exploring an open world, but the environments are gnarly and creepy as ****, with the constant threat of half-seen, demon-looking monsters bum rushing you and taking way too many bullets to ****ing die. The combat is therefore intense and chaotic and you will probably die quite often. I'm only a couple hours into the game and it's already somewhat challenging.

It's also got survival horror elements and aesthetics, with weapons that aren't entirely effective against anything but humans, and limited ammunition (though not prohibitively limited) that makes every encounter into a moderately nerve-racking event often preceded by howling freaks that you can't see and therefore spend a good twenty seconds frantically searching for, lest they eviscerate you from behind. It doesn't help that the enemies are faster than you. I wouldn't call it scary, at least not yet, but it's still an unnerving experience.

ATM I highly recommend it to fans of post-apocalyptic games, unique first-person shooters, and horror games.

If you want the open-world experience you gotta play the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

I've already played the first game a bit, and that **** is surprisingly hard. Also satisfying when you figure out some 1337 way to deal with a situation other than just a gun fight. My favorite was when I spooked a pack of dogs, which caught the attention of the guys I was trying to sneak around, leading to a pretty awesome melee between the two groups that I roundly ignored as I breezed past them. I really need to play that again.

Nostalgia and being a retro gaming hipster are the reasons bulb.

I picked up Watchdogs 2 finally and Project X Zone 2.

I thought 'The Legend Reborn For Some Reason' was the actual title. It'd be a great one.

That was always the charm about that series, all those emergent gameplay instances.

When you're finished with Metro 2033 I'd highly recommend playing the sequel, Metro: Last Light. It's largely the same but a bit tighter in the gameplay front and less buggy.

I probably will. The first is one of the best shooters I've played in years so far.

OMG I'm the biggest pussy. I thought Metro 2033 was kind of unnerving. Then for the first time all game I'm doing a mission without a partner and that **** has me moderately freaking out. Hiding like a rat from flying demon things and fear quitting at the same mutant dog thing ambush twice. I don't even think it should be that scary.
