What's so special about Halo ? I've been wondering that for years and still don't know.
Back in the early '00's I thought it was a case of stockholm syndrome because it seemed to be the only game out on the original Xbox worth a damn. I got the PC port that came out in 2003 and was thoroughly unimpressed with the story, shooting, enemies, and level design that I had to stop playing when I was forced to follow this robot around a succession of identical corridors that seemed to go on forever. I will say though that some of the levels were quite expansive and it was one of the first games I can remember that had driveable vehicles in it, so maybe it's that. It's still the game that spearheaded many of the things I find I hate about modern FPS' like limited weapon slots and regenerating health.

I like Halo because it is more epic, has better presentation, and is slower/more involved than the run-n-gun FPS games of the 90s. Halo may not have done anything decidedly original, but what it did do is put different ideas together. I'm talking about the first game by the way. I hate the other Halo games.

And for most people that was probably the first time they'd ever played a console shooter with controls that weren't in some way awkward. We all love Goldeneye, but I doubt anyone wants its control scheme to become standard.

Whoa that was weird. For a moment there, I thought someone said that Quake is better than DOOM II.

Only thing Quake and UT have going for them is speed. They are shallow other than that.
