Dead Cells (Extended Review)

I talked about this game a few posts back, but I really don't think I put together the words that truly describe how great this game actually is. Here's the deal: When you're dealing with the rogue like genre and you want to make a good game with those qualities, there are specific things you have to follow. Is the game fun? Do the controls feels tight? Are the graphics at least good? And is it tough? Those four things are what I tend to look for when games like this come out, and you can bet damn well that I put a huge check mark next to each of those questions as I've been putting more time into Dead Cells.

So what is this game? Well, take everything you know about Rogue Legacy, Metroid, Castlevania, and the like, and throw it all together into what I consider a Binding of Isaac meets Castlevania meets hack n slash. This game is so well made with where it's at in its development that it's nearly impossible for this game to do poorly. I've been playing run after run (and dying a lot) and I still find myself enjoying each and every run. There are a lot of areas that tend to start to feel the same, but you really don't notice it too much because you're too busy trying to kill the next wave of enemies, or trying to find the right amount of loot so that you can be powerful enough to take on the next floor.

Now, one of my favorite things about this game that it does differently than a lot of these style games, is how it lets you basically upgrade your items between floors. You get these things called "cells" which I believe are a huge inspiration from Dark Souls with how you collect souls, and you use those cells to purchase upgrades for specific weapons you find around the world. You can also pick up things called blueprints that allow you to unlock those items in order to upgrade them as you progress. It's set up to be just like you'd think: a run by run basis where if you can get powerful enough early on, you'll do just fine, however if you lack the patience and want to get through rooms as quickly as possible, you'll find that the enemies pack a punch.

There's no denying that this game is tough. It really is. But that's because the controls and fighting styles are so fluid and well polished that it makes every single move you make count. You also have a dodge roll which is executed perfectly in this game. You'll find yourself pulling off some really neat moves. Like for instance, I had a bow and arrow as my secondary item, so I hit an elite enemy with my blood sword, inflicted bleed damage, rolled under him, and shot an arrow into his back. You also get variations of weapons like ice arrows, and blood swords, and fire swords, and the list goes on and on.

Again, I want to reiterate the fact that this game is in early access, but it feels like a fully done game with some minor tweaks needing to be done to add more accessibility etc. But, it's still a really really well done game and I can't wait to see how it evolves.

If you're in for an itch like the Binding of Isaac gave you on your first try, where everything was just up to chance and finding the right items, this game is definitely one you need to play. If you've ever taken my opinion on games seriously, this would be the time to really take it seriously. It's been a long time since I've had a game take over this much, but that just pays tribute to how good and well thought out every moment of this game is done.

This has the potential to take my game of the year slot if other games don't do it first. And I know Breath of the Wild exists, but unfortunately I just haven't been putting a lot of time into that. If I were to do categories however, this would easily be the best roguelike / rogue light game I have played this year, and perhaps over the past couple years.

Get it, it's only 15 bucks I believe. You owe it to yourself.

Also, the soundtrack is ****ing phenomenal. Very minimalist but it adds a certain style of intensity that works for the game really well. https://valmontderagondas.bandcamp.c...ndtrack-part-1

I know, it's been listed as the minimum for a ton of games for years, and most of the time the game is perfectly playable, sometimes even better - for example the Witcher 3, on a "minimum" gpu, ran pretty well most of the time in full hd and medium details. Similarly fallout 4 or ME:Andromeda.

Thing is, this is a mp game. I can always load a save game in the witcher, here dying because the computer decided to choke suddenly... that actually makes me violent sometimes ;P
I'll probably just sit on the sidelines, watching this game for a while...
And I'll keep playing World of Warships in the meantime
Speaking of which
Anyone here playing too ? or at least somewhat interested ?
I think I posted about it in this thread before, but I don't see why I couldn't do it again.
WoWs is a game about.. warships. Duh. Thing is , unlike for example World of Tanks, or practically any other military game with vehicles of some kind, that isn't a simulator - this game doesn't require twitch shooting, quick reflexes, being able to 360noscope headshots or whatnot - it rewards planning, patience, knowledge of your enemy and what you can do.
Now don't get me wrong, there is a lot of skill involved in actually hitting the enemy, especially at long range or if he's actively maneuvering to avoid you, but that comes with time.
Also, as someone who tested out a lot of mmo/f2p games, this one has a surprisingly good business model - you actually don't have to spend money on it if you don't want to and you still get to experience the best it has to offer.
The grind is also not as painful, compared to World of Tanks getting subsequent ships, earning the xp and money neded takes roughly half as long as it did with tanks, so there's that.
Here's the cinematic trailer

And an all in engine one

Got Fallout 3 on Steam on a whim, and it wasn't nearly as awful as I expected to get it running. Or at least I hope it's running properly... Haven't played the game since it came out nine years ago (holy ****!), so this is going to be heavy on the nostalgia and hopefully won't feel like a retread. Playing Fallout 3 back then was one of my all-time fav game experiences, but once the sidequests were finished I was kind of done with the game, and so never replayed it. At the very least I never played any of the DLC, so that'll be new. And I can't wait to get to DC.

The DLC's for Fallout 3 are all fantastic. I've played through each of them and they are all great. Have fun Bat.

Saw Company of Heroes 2 was on sale for dirt cheap today. COH 1 is basically the ultimate WWII real-time strategy game and is about ten tons of awesome. I was wondering why I'd need 2 when I already have 1, cause, like, was there a sequel to WWII? I think I would have heard of it.

And then I saw it was about the Eastern Front.

Spoiler for srsly:
The Eastern Front.

The Eastern Front.

The Eastern Front.

The Eastern Front.

The Eastern Front.

OMFG THE EASTERN FRONT PILES OF DEAD RUSSIANS BARBAROSSA STALINGRAD KURSK TIGERS VS. T-34'S I DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING I WANNA PLAY THIS ****ING **** RIGHT NOW!!!

Basically me. The world has more ****, better weapons, and the story is better.

Thought I'd made a Fallout post for a minute cause of this post, but it's entirely by coincidence that I've been playing Fallout 4 for the past few days. The world isn't as cool as 3 or NV, but as a crafting whore I am totally digging building my own settlement. Like, hardcore. Even the mechanic where you can have a thing you're trying to build set to be built as soon as you have all the materials necessary is awesome. And having a character who actually feels like they matter rather than a nameless peon with no personality is awesome.

So for the moment I'm giving Fallout 4 my definite seal of approval. I just wish the wasteland had more personality.

This is probably the most fun I have had playing a pokemon "like" game in a long time.

I say "like" because you won't recognize a single one in this game. This is actually a romhack of the fire red game for the game boy advanced. It was created by a bunch of anons from 4chan. It's filled with ****ty memes and not very pc humor. It's great. I feel like a kid again going through and learning the typings and other aspects of the new pokemon. If you have a shred of interest in pokemon, or stupid meme humor, try it out.
