I do that whenever I make eye contact with anyone on the bus anyway.

That reminds me that I need to pick the first Bayonetta back up. Might do that in a bit.

Heroes of Steel

Bought a lot of cheap games on the recent Steam sale, so I'm trying out a bunch of new games now. Played an hour of this RPG and it's pretty interesting so far. It's completely linear, it seems, with turn based tactical battles where you move around on squares like in an old school war strategy game. I vastly prefer this to JRPG style combat, so this game is basically giving me something I've been wanting for years: JRPG style structure, but with finite enemy encounters and deeper combat. No more pointlessly recurring spam fights! Still, I don't know how this game will evolve over time, but so far, having just been through the arduous escape from the starting dungeon, it's pretty neat. Although the entirely top-down graphics are a tad on the dull side. But that suits me ok. I like dry dad-RPGs! The kind where you sit and stroke your beard, sip from your coffee cup and agonize over the many possible moves you could make.

Steamworld Heist

Tried this one out for a couple hours too. It's a lightweight strategy game of sorts where you control a team of characters and have shootouts much like in those X-Com remakes from a few years back. The novel thing here is that you aim freely and bullets ricochet, so you can pull off fancy trick shots to hit things that aren't in line of sight, etc. A simple but great idea. Pretty satisfying to get out of a bad situation with a couple well placed shots.

The first screenshot I found suggests it's also a console game. I only know it from Steam. I realize I no longer have any idea what's happening on consoles.

After 3 to 4 hours of total play time in Steam World Heist, it really started feeling like a grind. There's a lot of little things about the game that I'm not too keen on, but it also kinda kills it for me that it feels so tactically limited. Kinda not so great when it's a turn based strategy game. Even a simple old game like the original Worms game is a lot deeper, ultimately. The casual game like vibe to the graphics and writing also doesn't really sit well with me in Steamworld Heist. Not a terrible game, but I don't feel like putting more time into it. Too many great alternatives.

This happens often for me: Liking a game the first hour, then getting really tired of it a bit further in. The real test of mettle is if a game can hold my attention for over 3 hours, I guess.
