I really like the writing for Preacher, the art work is also pretty top notch. Jesses' back story is one twisted piece of work too. There is also a decent element of humor there too, especially in the character of Arseface. Still it's in 3rd place out of my favorite comic series. Fell is my 2nd, god that series is amazing, everyone I've recommended it to have all come back wanting more, it's brilliantly written in short doses so you never get bored and it doesn't outstay it's welcome. Transmetropolitan is still the best I've ever read and would totally recommend it anyone who's a fan of Hunter S. Thompson, cyber punk, or journalism.

I have to admit to being a total n00b when it comes to comics and I haven't read too many, but I snagged this over the weekend. Mostly just because I absolutely love the cover art (I have a larger wall poster of it hanging at home), but also because I've read that Alan Moore is a fantastic graphic novel writer. From doing a minute amount of research online, and asking a few comic shop guys I thought this was going to be a hard find, and an expensive one at that, but I just happened upon it suddenly while I was looking for something else. I hope to start reading it soon! Anyone else read the series? Whatcha think?

I read a few issues, the characters aren't as interesting as most of his other stuff.

I recommend checking out "miracle man" if your interested in Alan Moore. It's crazy.

I actually have that Saga of the Swamp Thing. When I get back on my comic reading, I'll get around to it.

OK...so I just finished book 1 of this comic series. Mixed feelings about it for sure. Mostly I enjoyed the art work, but it bothered me that Roland and his ka-tet always have their faces in shadows. I couldn't tell if there was supposed to be some symbolic point to that, or if the artist was just getting lazy. I am glad to be getting some background information on the Dark Tower story, however at time I find the characters confusing. Also, the comic gave me the impression that Walter and Marten where the same person...did I misread something? Because the book makes it seem like they aren't. So if any of you have read this comic and can clear that up for me, that'd be great.

Just came across the comic thread on here. Well I`ve actually decided to read the history of marvel (Ie all the main titles from the start) its taken me well over a year now to read Amazing Spider Man, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Avengers, X-Men, Defenders, Master of Kung-Fu, Dracula amongst others. Started in the early 1960`s and am currently around 1976 and its a hell of a read, as I move on I`m going to have to select titles given the amount of titles I know Marvel brought out in the 1980`s.

Since I'm all caught up on my Walking Dead comics, I started reading this one recently:

Its a really nice autobiographical comic book about a young boy and his older brother who is an epileptic. It shows them growing up and has a wonderful art style.

Yes, of course we've read it. I may be mistaken but I thought I've read a bit of MB love for it in the past.
As for unique and original, I'm not so sure about those because it does bother me that some of the 1990s-2000s comics published by Fantagraphics look and feel EXACTLY alike. However, this didn't stop me from paying $25 for the hardbound edition of 'Black Hole' (Pantheon, 2005) as soon as it was available. It's a truly excellent piece of literature and I love it too.

New X-Men #4 - Grant Morrison & Various Artists

okay, i was less than impressed by issues 1 to 3, but the writing has picked up with the introduction of "Fantomex"/Weapon XIII - the art is a bit more patchy than the first three books - very sketchy and looking unfinished, but the story's better

Hell I'm still reading X Men stuff from the late 1970s.

this is from 2004, i believe - the group dynamics are heckuva lot more complex

having a real hard time locating the hotlinks for the covers of these:-

New X-Men #5

basically a whodunnit, with some rogue Neo-Nazi-esque mutant students thrown in, nothing to shout about, although the pencils are great (entirely drawn by the Marvel-ous Frank Quitely)

New X-Men #6

this is treading back into very familiar territory - the name Chris Bachalo ring a bell? - yes, Morrison's old-time partner on Doom Patrol brings the New X-Men into much the similar territory as before, with the introduction of The World, Weapon XV and Dr. Sublime - this is preferable to the above collection (to me, at least, a die-hard fan of Morrison's DP)

edit:- also, 3 major quibbles:-

1. you often see some major psychic energy used by one of the heroes to defeat a powerful enemy and it's drawn out rather nicely, but what actually happened? at best, it's like a deus ex machina, at worst the equivalent of a Jedi mind trick, i'm willing to hedge a bet that even Mr. Morrison himself can't explain it

2. i spent most of my teenage life reading about Madelene Pryor being the love of Scott "Slim" Summers/Cyclops, the lookalike to Jean Grey who took over after the Phoenix killed Jean, i want to see the Phoenix rise again (there are signs of it here) and Madelene back - cos i'm in love with her more

3. will Kitty Pryde (Jewish girl who walks through walls) ever be resurrected? I remember most of my teenage life being infatuated with her......

edit 2:- New X-Men #7

my wish has been fulfilled - Jean Grey dies (again) mostly a tale of how Magneto is out-dated and his altruistic ambitions are better, blah blah blah - no much depth

edit 3 - New X-Men #8

hardly a fitting closure for Morrison's run, though i did like this run slightly better than his on the Justice Leage of America - a post-apocalyptic alternate future thing again (cliche cliche)

Has anyone read FreakAngels? What do you think about it if you have? I saw a collection at the comic book store and almost picked it up, but hesitated for some reason. The synopsis and cover art were enticing though.

I have, it wasn't Warren Ellis' best writing (but even his worst writing is a step above what passes for average these days), but it was still a pretty engaging story full of interesting characters. Your hesitation actually proved useful because it was originally published as a webcomic on Fridays and is still up so you can read the entire thing for free first, and then decide if you want a hard copy. If this is your first introduction to Warren Ellis though, I would highly recommend picking up the series Transmetropolitan in hardback, it's essentially about Hunter S. Thompson in a grim cyberpunk future, assisted by his two "Filthy assistants" and armed with a bowel disputer gun.

i have only read Part Three, thought I'd give this a shot as the new movie will feature Bane

concerns the plot of Bane to break the Bat, and is mostly centred around him breaking out the inmates of Arkham Asylum

amateurish art aside, this is a thrilling rollercoaster ride, with the Zsasz issue (insane serial killer) the best

i've always dug Doug Moench's writing, so......

highly recommended, although there's some backstory to this that I'm not aware of, and the story doesn't explain it well

I just reread The Black Hole by Charles Burn and Robert Crumb's America. Both were excellent. Anyone a fan of either? I didn't really get The Black Hole but feel like I'm not supposed to.

I haven't seen The Black Hole but I do like Charles Burns. Haven't bought any new comics in years though. I have Hard Boiled Defective Stories by Charles Burns (1980s) and he has work in some of the Raw series I collected back then.

Sorry to be that guy, it's just Black Hole, not The Black Hole. The Black Hole is a Disney movie.

I make mistakes like that all the time. T'is embarassin'. I really liked the art and the surreal feel of the story. It reminded me of Love and Rockets, another great comic.

Just slowly work your way through The Sandman series. It'll take you a while but it's worth it.

best batman comic i've read. Lives up to the premise (something a lot of these comics have been disappointing me by not doing) and has a great art style. Wish more superheroes were this grounded. I wish batman was more like this in general.
