Interesting. I did like season one but Vaughan put me off ever watching season two.

Vaughan was fine but the fact that it wasn't season 1 was a crippling blow.

I'm rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer in its entirety for the first time, I'm at the beginning of season 5 at this point. Thoughts so far:
- season 3 is still amazing and the Mayor is my favourite main villain.
- it's as I suspected: now that I'm (sort of) an adult I relate much more to Buffy. I still adore Willow but I feel like I outgrew some of the things I recognised in her (which wasn't much to begin with, I've never been a meek exemplary student with a preference for fluffy pink sweaters)
- Some of the feminist and racial missteps are more disturbing than I recall, although maybe that's partly due to knowing about the Whedon scandal
- Faith <3<3<3
all she wanted was a cute blonde slayer gf and she deserved better and of course she did some very wrong things and I don't care
- To me, Helpless is still the hardest episode to watch in the first half of the series
- Now that I'm more invested in Buffy and her feelings I'm less annoyed by her relationship with Angel, but only for her sake. David Boreanaz' acting really doesn't help.
- I still think Dawn is great and an asset to the series and I will die on this hill
- If the Initiative plot didn't suck so much season 4 would be incredible. Also, the roommate drama episode hit different after my housemate troubles, and Hush is eerily reminiscent of the corona situation in some ways

There’s something about Joss Whedon's dialogue writing that doesn’t get through my screen of fun-averse misanthropy to where I can enjoy things. People around me love this show but I can’t watch it without going “oh so I guess this just happened” at the screen in my most annoying voice.

That's the one thing I like about anime: no matter how awful it is, the sound of Japanese is always fun. Who even needs to read the subtitles to try to follow what's going on, just listen to the funny voices!

you have to set aside the 'but this is silly' part of yourself to get to the rewards of character development and fun, and with Buffy those rewards are rich. It's just a matter of whether something about the series happens to hook you enough to get to that point

Thing is my favorite shows (Stella Street, Bo Selecta, B&B) are all rather silly in one sense or another, so I guess it goes deeper: I just don't vibe with the tone. Maybe it's part of what you have in mind, but I also can't suspend my reaction to it.

I kind of like that Buffy is the common ground for my closest friends, a European Gen X couple, and my zoomer partner who's from Portland. I even pretend to bristle at being excluded but honestly it's great she can talk to them about something they all like.

Catching up on season 2 and 3 of Manifest. I don't understand why it gets such bad press. I think it's very well written, the plot holds together well and the acting, while not exactly stellar, is not terrible. Hey, the fact that it hasn't been cancelled must count for something. I'm enjoying reacquainting myself with the series.
