Overated Films (country, metal, quote, Lute, hands)

Haha, ok I was being pretty biased. I do acknowledge its significance and the cinematography is quite good. And yeah, it's not an objecively terrible movie, it's a terrible movie in my opinion, but it is an objectively overrated movie, it was not good enough to receive all the oscar nominations and best picture. So there, agree to disagree.

I never liked Philadelphia. It's just too syrupy for my liking - interesting premise, but Jonathan Demme and Ron Nyswaner don't do a very good job with it overall. Plus that scene where Tom Hanks gives that monologue is one of the most overcooked sequences in cinema history (in my opinion).

I kind of agree. I think I maybe like it a little more than you do but I still think it's pretty overrated. It's always felt almost like a TV movie to me for some reason. Is that scene you're talking about the one with the opera music? Because even however many years ago when I saw it in the theater I thought that scene sucked.

Yeah, that's the one. There are much worse films out there of course, but I reckon Philadelphia just tried too hard for that oscar, especially with that particular scene.

Yeah I think they could have done without that scene. Hanks and Washington are both excellent in that film though and they kept it all together.

2001: A Space Odyssey

I love the idea. I love that it was so influential, but I don't know HOW to watch this movie. If I approach it as a film, it makes no sense to me. If I approach it as an extra long Discovery channel panoramic view special with a great soundtrack, then I can't call it a film. The fact that I can't define it fascinates and frustrates me.

No Country For Old Men

Love the sibling directors, but I just didn't get this one.

Full Metal Jacket

2 hours too long. It should have ended after Pyle shot himself (which I thought was the end of the film before I watched it, but to my surprise it goes on for another few hours). Part 2 of this movie just feels redundant with Apocalypse Now having been the pinnacle of dense Vietnam films.

The book it's based on is a lot more literate I believe, Kubrick intentionally made it confusing and ambiguous because that's what he does. Watch 2010, it explains things a bit.

Everyone craps on part 2 of Full Metal Jacket but I really liked it, thought Modine was great and the ending was great.

Also, I should watch Full Metal Jacket again. I was under the impression that the movie ended with Pyle, and when it chugged on for another 2 hours it felt like a chore. Now that I know what to expect, I should try it again.
