People go to those sites for anything other than cheat codes and a desire to be bombarded with ads?

1UP is a huge piece of ****.

I only really know IGN and don't think it's too bad. It's the game version of allmusic/imdb and i think it does it's job well, especially throwing in the walkthroughs and cheats.

GameSpot is a bunch of corporate c*cksuckers who wouldn't know a good game if it bit them in the ass. The only thing about that site that is even remotely reliable is the user scores, no scratch that, they're too generous, Shadow the Hedgehog has a 7.4. That's just ridiculous. It also has the most retarded forum I've ever seen, with a reputation of it's moderators being total douchebags.

IGN has some great content but it's reviews are just horrible, like GameStop they flip flop on their opinions when it's fashionable to do so and they have no consistancy at all. It's also one of those websites that teases you with a lot of content that's only accessible if you're a registered member. Again the idea of video game journalism sounds good on paper but like all the others it falls victim to ridiculous fanboyism and piss poor consumer advice. It's a good site for general information and it does have cheat codes, but so does GameFAQs so f*ck it.

GameSpy hosts some really good fansites. But the actual site itself is just worthless, with the worst gaming reviews I've ever read, EVER.

Video game journalism can't work, it just can't. There are good gaming sites but they don't hide behind a false pretense of objectivity or serious journalism.

I was on the 1UP forum pretty religiously about two years ago....
And before that I was a Jr. Mod on the Cheatplanet forum until it got canned.
Other then that I don't usually use these sites except gamefaqs for cheats etc. i know for a fact Gamespot sucks though/

Gamespot has a great site layout, but pretty shitty content. A lot of people rip on IGN, probably with the pre-concieved bias against it being the biggest gaming site out there, but IGN really has all the news. Some of their reviews I don't like so much, but in general, I agree with them.

I'll never forgive them for reviewing Genghis Tron's "Board Up THe House" and giving it a 3.3/10 though. :/

I went for gamespy. I hate it, just absolutely hate. IGN isn't too bad though

IGN are trying to spread into other media, because giving lame video game reviews just isn't enough.

But to IGN and Gamespy's credit, their network does host some pretty sweet retrogaming sites.
