If a movie is making excuses to have these shots, obviously the people who made it were well aware as they were making it that the movie was going to be 3D.
Avatar didn't do that though, it didn't use 3D simply to throw stuff at you but to make you feel like you're really sucked into the environment, and it worked.

Also I was making reference to this.

that was actually the point i was making. the movies with someone intentionally throwing a ball at your face were obviously not your big budget blockbusters. they were there for the 3d thrill.

the big difference now is that big budget hollywood films are now purposefully setting out to make movies that would be enjoyable in 3d, and not your typical ball in the face action.

whether or not you want to partake is your decision entirely, but there are obviously people that are enjoying seeing avatar in 3d as compared to "ball in your face" movies.

It's not the first time it's been thought of as cool. I remember I got a Donald Duck magazine when I was a kid where the cartoon images were all anaglyphs. Red/Green glasses included!

edit :

For the record, 3D in movies is just distracting I think. I prefer the regular versions!
I'm pretty much 98% sure that our local cinema got a new screen for 3D.

I know what you mean by it can be distracting, I got a bit of a headache, but I have quite dodgy eyes. One being long sighted and the other being short, I dont know wither this was related, but I'll blame it anyways. I just think there's a hype around the 3D because for people my age, I'm pretty sure the only 3D film was Jurassic Park (I Think), thats just the point I'm making, it's newish here .

Except for the people it didn't work for, like me. To me it was more like a distracting and pointless gimmick that added nothing to the experience.

Well, off the top of my head, Jaws 3 was a pretty big blockbuster-type movie that was in 3D. That one's over 25 years old.

And my point is that the end result isn't any better than the same movie in 2D.

Jaws 3D is one of the biggest pieces of sh*t you'll ever see in your life.

...

I have nothing against 3D, I've been defending Avatar's use of it the whole time.

Hell, even as a gimmick for old 50s horror and sci fi movies, it's a fun gimmick. Though I didn't watch the 3D version of Coraline because I worried I would be too distracted and also a big part of the films visual appeal was it's use of color and the red and blue would totally ruin that.

I hope the kinda glasses Avatar used becomes mandatory for now on.
