that's exactly it. why is that line even remotely funny? it has little to do with Farrell and everything to do with either the environment or the entourage around him.

put his movies on mute and try focusing on what he does. oh look it's the awkward face 'not' directly staring at the camera. that couldn't possibly be the subliminal trigger that tells people this is supposed to be funny. at least Mike Myers acknowledged and played up to the fact that SNL prepares pretty much all comedians since their original crew the same way (stare at the crowd and wait for the laughs).

Farrell just got lucky.

oh! awkward boner! HILARITY

I don't analyze comedy. I either laugh at it or I don't.

I'd imagine it's because the time to release it would have been 2006,not 2011, when people remembered the first one existed.

Comedy is kind of defined by people saying or doing things, in situations, that's perceived as being humorous. A lot of it is reliant on context. If all comedy consisted of was joke-lines and slapstick action, we'd have a pretty narrow concept of humor as a human civilization.
I don't think it's fair that you're dismissing techniques for making people laugh and ignoring the laughing people.

that's not what i'm saying. what i'm saying is Will Farrell is not funny, the people and situations (the ones that aren't forced by his behavior) around him are, but he is not.

the funniest thing i saw him associated with was that Landlord clip. he didn't actually need to be in that clip for it to be hilarious (the little girl wins) but HE doesn't seem to actually add anything to a scene.

Anchorman was painful to watch, maybe it's because i actually like Eric Dolphy's music and took offense to his treatment of it for a cheap laugh early on, but i didn't find anything else in that movie to be anything besides mind numbing.
