The only really indepedent-ish kingdom is Dorne.
Right, but only if you're counting the kingdoms alone. And House Martell isn't Independent. I just don't know where the Iron Islands fall.

I said independent-ish, they still have their own ruling laws such as the one about succession

I'm keeping in mind that I haven't read the whole book yet, I'm 2/3rds of the way, so my analysis maybe be a bit off.

Spoiler for spoiler:
I got the impression he's more independent in the book than on the show. It had an extensive back story, and we were enlightened about his position which I thought, made it easier to understand him and his choices. It's very apparent that conquering the Iron Throne was futile and accepting what the Red Lady offered felt like a last resort. I honestly don't think he gave a flying **** about the Red Lady in the book, she seemed more of a companion, rather him being a dog on a leash, completely dominated by her on the show.

I understand they can only do so much in a book and re-creating on film. They did well in that regard, I can't complain.

Meh, I don't know. The problem with the books, and then going to the show in comparison, is that Martin all but beats you over the head with something, and the show is much more subtle. But Stannis in both seems to be more about the math. He litterally says somethign to the effect, in book 5, of:

"Would I trade 300 for 3000? Aye. But you'd best be true to your word."

He mentions a lot that Malisandra is equivalent to Aegon's Dragons. Or at least how he seems it. And when it appears she calls the shots, Stannis seems this as the way things play out with the Red God, not exactly her.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about: (SPOLIERS)

Game of Thrones - Stannis Baratheon and Davos Seaworth ( Letter From Nights Watch HD) - YouTube

Overall though, where they take his character in the books will make it hard for them to portray him as completely ensorcelled. Unless they go way off path.

And here's why I started loving the character in the first place:

I can't really continue this discussion. I'm not that far in on the story line, and not far off being introduced to his character, so it's really just first impressions. I'll take your word for it for now (don't really want to delve into spoilers at this point).

I don't think Melisandre is being entirely honest with Stannis about everything. I especially don't believe that she thinks Stannis really is Azor Ahai.

Well she clearly isn't, given book 5. At the same time, its to further his plans, so we'll see where her allegiances lie. Stannis is a tough man to deal with. Davos has bordered on the rough end often enough.

What will be interesting to see is how, if its discovered, he deals with her. There is some hinting that Stannis isn't who she thinks he is, but there's also some argument as to whether that prophecy is even real. Or one person in total.

I think Melisandre thinks it's Jon Snow, but it's Dany.

Also I'm so excited for Skagos...

Spoiler for post adwd:
Like there is a theory that Ned's mother was a Skagosi woman, and they're all supposed to be cannibals/witch people etc, which I think is false, so I wonder what is hiding on Skagos that is so important

But also, I really really really want to hear more about the Doom of Valyria.

do you think they'll get into the doom? It seems like no one knows. The most interesting thing to me that's left unsaid is what Oldtown has planned.
