A Feast for Crows is in the unfortunate position of having to follow right after A Storm of Swords, which was almost all unrelenting action. There needed to be a bit of a cool down period to help create some juxtaposition and explore the characters we haven't gotten to know much yet, like Samwell and Cersci. I think it's purpose is to also help flesh out the religion of the Seven a little bit more and perhaps sow the seeds of a growing citizens uprising against the Lords whose petty wars has exhausted the food supply that was needed for the coming long winter.

As far as A Dance with Dragons is concerned, what I liked most about it is that so many of the characters have experienced large arcs and personality changes in a way that can only be described as epic.

Spoiler for spoilers:
Be it Arya becoming a Ninja assassin, Theon Greyjoy's deconstruction into the pitiful creature Reek, Cersci's fucking beautiful fall from power, Tyrion Lannister's enslavement, Jon Snow's rise into manhood, and Jaime Lannister's redemption
.

Spoiler for spoiler for all books:
gets stabbed at least four times at the end of Dance with Dragons. I find it hard to believe he will survive, given Martin's penchant for bathing in a pool of his readers' tears. However, I would not be surprised if Snow did survive the attack because Martin has also really blurred the line between life and death in the fourth and fifth books, what with The Hound's ambiguous state of life, Lady Catelyn's resurrection, Brienne's resurrection(?), etc. It's almost as if he's afraid to permanently off anyone any more.
Spoiler for spoiler for all books:
I doubt Jon is dead. For one thing, he was "killed" in his own POV, which so far in the series means that you're not really dead. It's only if another POV witnesses your death that you are really dead.

Case in point: Davos during the Battle of Blackwater, Tyrion during the Blackwater, Catelyn at the Red Wedding, Arya outside the Red Wedding, Brienne at the Inn at the Crossroads, Theon during the sack of Winterfell.

Best map I've yet seen. I wish I'd learned it before starting the series.

Whoa, okay, spoiler central. I've been reading up on some theories regarding the ASOIAF series and here are some of the more noteworthy ones, in my opinion.

Spoiler for Spoilers all books:
  • Robert Strong is The Mountain.
  • Sandor Clegane is alive and well on the Quiet Isle as a gravedigger.
  • Theon was castrated.
  • Azor Ahai is Jon Snow.
  • Aegon (Little Griff) is a Blackfyre descendant, and not Rhaegar and Elia's son. Varys and Illyrio are largely behind the rouse and trying to seat him on the Iron Throne.
  • Margaery Tyrell still has her maidenhead and the Tyrells orchestrated Cersei's downfall.
  • Jaime is the valonqar who will strangle Cersei.
  • The Jeyne Westerling in Riverrun encountered by Jaime Lannister was a decoy/imposter. The real Jeyne is pregnant with Robb's heir and hiding.
  • Septa Lemore is Ashara Dayne.

That is a great map and the best I've seen. Another great map is the one showing the boundaries of all the houses in Westeros but the one you've put up beats them all.

I'm not looking at anymore posts because I'm scared of having it all spoiled, but I am getting all 5 books in a month for my birthday and I plan on chowing through them.

aaaand bookmarked, I've been looking for a good map of Essos for some time now, would have come in handy during A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons.

Tonight's episode may well be the most violent of them yet.
