The show and book have never been solidly grounded in the real world though. I mean Westeros' answer to London is actually hot and sunny in the summer months which is blatantly inaccurate. But on Oberyn's casting: eh, he seems alright. I'm quite glad they went for the rugged look instead of the usual long-haired vaguely ethnic pretty boy I was expecting them to cast and while I've never heard of the guy... well, his acting ability won't be crucial to the long-term future of the show if it isn't anything special.
