Default Thoughts From the Booth (Film Journal)

I came here for music but have continually found myself talking about movies more often. It's been a passion of mine only recently but I've always found myself to be a lover of film. I work in the business. I've been a movie theater employee for over five years, the last three and a half being as a projectionist/manager of a small art house. The past year or so I've really just become obsessed with movies and try to watch as many new films as I can get hold of (You can check out my movie list of 2012 at the bottom of this post).

This thread isn't going to be just films that I've recently watched. I'm going to post new trailers I find interesting and basically anything regarding film that I feel like sharing. Let's see how this works out.

Movies I've seen in 2012 (old and new alike)

Hyde Park on Hudson trailer dropped recently and it looks fantastic. Bill Murray has always been one of my favorite people ever.
The dude is just ****ing awesome. Lost in Translation is one of my favorite films of all time and Bill got royally screwed because his film came out the same year that Sean Penn (Mystic River) and Sir Ben Kingsley (House of Sand and Fog) put in performances that were just unbelievable. The three of them should have really shared that Oscar. This is hopefully going to be his year as he looks like he could be gunning for that award with his performance as FDR. I can't possibly predict from a two minute trailer that he is going to be fantastic but I certainly can be excited for one of my favorite actors looks like he's going to be dropping another gem on us with this one.

Hyde Park on Hudson is set to release in December.

Whew. What an ending. A very heavy movie that ended with a bang but was also very beautiful. I haven't seen many Mexican films but the ones I have have all been fantastic. This one was definitely the most depressing of them but in a way I felt very fresh and relieved having seen it.

Thank you sir. I assure you that I have it EASY. I got lucky enough to be in charge of a dying theater, meaning there is A LOT of downtime. I still have hard nights such as thursdays when a new crop of films has to be spliced up and an old batch needs to be spliced down. That, and I still have to deal with people, but I can't complain being in this business with the job I have. I enjoy it.

Finally got around to seeing the famous Battleship Potemkin. I enjoyed it for what it was, a propaganda film that still had its cinematic moments. For those of you who watched it, did you notice that the Odessa stair scene had a baby carriage falling down the stairs EXACTLY like The Untouchables? I guess De Palma was a fan of Potemkin because it can't be a coincidence. The Odessa stair scene was definitely the highlight of a film that will be watched by film students for years to come. I'll have to check out Alexander Nevsky sometime as it's supposed to be more of a plot driven film.

After a few serious movies I like to throw in a cheesy movie to kind of even the playing field. I downloaded a whole set of 80s and 90s cheese films and dive into it every couple of days.

"Horror" film from the late 80s about a bunch of kids that uncover a lair of mini demons in their backyard. This one is filled with dead animals, horrible dialogue, and numerous uses of the word "f a g" which kind of surprised me because it seemed to be geared towards kids who like scary movies. Stephen Dorff makes an early film appearance as the main kid caught up in the mess. It reminded me a lot of Earnest Scared Stupid which was a film I loved as a kid. It could have been much worse but it still wasn't a very good movie.

Yup. That's a real Anchorman 2 teaser trailer. I loved Anchorman so I hope this doesn't destroy the uniqueness of the first film. I'm just glad to see Champ back.

That looks freaking fantastic. Finally, Murray in a leading role again. Thanks for the tip.

This one has been sitting in my queue for a while and I finally brought it out while at work for another ten hours today. That was one hell of a good story. The acting was very good and while the camera work wasn't special in most cases it had some absolutely wonderful shots throughout. The ending was a great twist. I really didn't have any idea that it was going to end that way and the actual last scene was very creepy and ambiguous. I think I might go out and purchase this one if I can find a good price.

Next up: More cheese with Lathe of Heaven.
