Ursula K. Le Guin is a good one. I especially liked The Lathe of Heaven by her.

I seem to remember looking for some Ursula LeGuin at the library a while ago. Didn't find much or possibly even anything.

Oh, just looked her up. I think I remember seeing Wizard of Earthsea at the used book store. Might have to snatch it up.

Superhero movies nowadays are better than ever, and the characters have a comic background story this means the screenplays basically write themselves, they have alot of stories to draw from AND from different perspectives.

Just compare the recent Batman movies with the Spiderman movies, though both super heroes their stories have a different tone, Batman is gritty and dark and Spiderman is fun and super powers.

And take watchmen, that movie is an exmpl of how much you can explore the super hero mythology in alot of different ways.

My only fear with superhero flicks is that they all turn into mindless CGI summer blockbusters, but if they stay true to the original stories they can make ALOT of good superhero movies in the future.
I guess because I don't think the batman movies are that great and all of the Spiderman movies are bad. I'm not really a fan of the whole black/white, heres a bad guy lets defeat him because we're good guys stuff. Its boring and all superhero movies run along that same storyline. Haven't seen the watchmen but have little inclination to anyways

Well, I suppose I can't argue with you as far as the sheer number of shows one could choose from is concerned. I would argue, however, that there is little difference between most of what we find on TV. It's as if there's a finite number of ways one may write a script and film it. And, if someone comes up with something new it's instantly copied and reproduced with a few changes, so that it won't be too apparent that this particular, new show is basically the same as one or a few others.

I guess I blame deconstructivism: find a format that works well with a statistically viable number of viewers and you've got yourself a basic model for producing most of what's on TV today. Though most -isms are just names for ways of viewing the world, so...

I have to say though, that HBO managed to break some new ground with OZ, which have inspired some creative thinking this last five years or so.

You're right, they should just merge The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and The Biggest Loser. It's all basically the same show. It's a shame that people have somehow forgotten how to be creative.

I don't think you have been keeping up with new shows that have been released recently.

This is probably the second golden age of television we are witnessing.

And then somehow make all that into another Law and order division.

Im surprised people haven't mentioned all the sh*tty cop shows that currently rule tv land, recycling once A or B list actors into C list actors ('C' is for cops) and recycling the same cop drama formula over and over again.

And i don't see this stopping anytime soon, i expect more sh*tty cop shows in the future, and also more hospital shows, ppl love doctors and cops, apparently their lives are full of soap opera drama.

Being original isn't necessarily the point of superheroes. The basic concept of the superhero is just like the concept of the myths and legends of the past. They're stories we've all heard before in one form or another our entire lives and have remained basically the same throughout history no matter what form they've taken whether they were Greek or Viking or Christian. Simple stories with simple morals about archetypal heroes that form and/or reflect the very threads of our culture and morality.

Originality can be a bonus, but it isn't a necessity.
