Unpopular Book/Film/TV Show Opinions

We already have one of these for music, so I thought I'd open one up for the media section. So what unpopular opinions do you hold?

I'll get the ball rolling with this one: Farenheit 451 is a mediocre book with a terrible ending, especially with Bradbury's potential to be a better writer as evidenced by his short stories.

Psychedub Dude 04-03-2014 09:51 AM

I find Mad Men to be really boring and just cant get into it.

The Batlord 04-03-2014 10:00 AM

I just watched half of the first Star Wars for the first time in years yesterday and was awestruck by just how awful and awkward a lot of the dialogue was. Most of the actors managed to pull it off, but Mark Hamill just dropped turd after turd, and it was only partly his fault. "Biggs is right I'm never gonna get out of here!" might just be one of the worst lines in all of film. And the stormtroopers...woof. Thank god other people directed the other two cause George Lucas couldn't direct traffic.

Oh and the art direction was pretty hit or miss as well. Sometimes it was brilliant and other times it looked like a bad episode of Dr. Who. Seriously, what was Lucas thinking with the droids in the Jawas...desert...tank...thing? And Luke and Leia's outfits? Woof.

Black Francis 04-03-2014 10:27 AM

I'll probably get alof of hate for this but Harry Potter.

I fail to see what is so great about the books and movies, i mean i enjoy the story as a fantasy tale but ive met some ppl that are REALLY into it, it's like Harry potter is a way of life for them.

It's been almost 25 years since I read that book so maybe I'd view it differently now, but I really loved it at the time.

x2. I've had so many people tell me I'd love it because I've worked in the marketing and advertising world my whole career, but think that's actually the exact reason I find it boring.

Its certainly a dialogue heavy show, and can drone on at times, but I really enjoy it.

Two and a Half Men- I never understood the love that Charlie Sheen got for this show. What a deplorable plot of a show and the one liners make me cringe. Also Jon Cryer, you suck.

That show is horrible, im amazed ppl watch that sh*t.

you can smell the lame jokes coming a mile away.

Same with 'How i met your mother' although i kinda like that show. :p:

If Seinfeld is Genesis then Two and a Half Men is the Damned (at least the first album). A sitcom stripped down of all pretensions and intellectualism and reduced to the simple concept of setup -> punchline. Not that I'm saying it's in any way artistic, but it's just a sitcom that requires no brain to enjoy, which doesn't necessarily make it the abomination that so many think it is.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-03-2014 11:12 AM

Movies based on comic books

Please stop.

Unpretentious and brainless is fine but I still require my comedies to be funny. Two and a Half Men isn't.

Black Francis 04-03-2014 11:28 AM

And Charlie sheen looks like a trainwreck of his former self, it's painful to watch.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of a train wreck looking like a second train wreck.

This is already a thread (cause I made it) but yeah I will bite either way.

I pretty much dislike all popular stand up comedians. It's not even that I have a weird sense of humour because I like some popular comedy movies but when it comes to comedians I am really picky. I think there's something about telling jokes on stage that's really derivative and the form doesn't do much to further creativity. I can count on one hand the stand-ups I enjoy and especially in the UK they aren't the ones that the majority would choose.

Friends is pretty funny but only worthwhile because it established some basic sitcom tropes that other (better) shows have played and experimented with. There's no reason why it should still be relevant and worshipped to that level.

**** David O'Russell. The guy should not be as critically acclaimed as he is because he's so boring and he's doing nothing new. I feel he's one of a handful of directors loved by both arthouse circles and the mainstream (especially the academy). His last two movies have been riding on the coat tails of their stars. In thirty years, I can't see his movies being remembered well.

Depends on what you are talking about.

Elecktra and Phantoms. Ok please be my guest lets have a film burning.

There are some good ones....

Rjinn 04-03-2014 08:20 PM

I don't find Modern Family funny or interesting at all.

I'd take it a step farther and say that three or so accidental seconds of viewing that show on a couple/three occasions had me desperately diving toward the remote

Boo!

I love that show and have been there with them since the beginning. It gets laughs out of me every single time and I love all the characters especially Phil.

It is really great to see different family dynamics represented on TV. It really is fabulous and has all these awards to back it up.

RoxyRollah 04-04-2014 06:24 AM

Don't get me started on awards. And how people think that actually means something nowadays.

Regardless of your opinion it actually does mean something.

It can save shows and also give others a decent ratings bump. Awards matter more to those that actually create he shows and put their blood sweat and tears into it. So whatever to you.

Goofle 04-04-2014 07:48 AM

Some TV Show opinions that may be considered to be unpopular:

- Cougar Town is a very good show.

- Game of Thrones is good, but the storytelling is pretty lacklustre. Predictable as f*ck and moves at a slower pace than Dragon Ball Z.

- Extras is better than The Office.

- The Larry Sanders Show > Seinfeld.

Janszoon 04-04-2014 07:53 AM

You lost me at Cougar Town.

Goofle 04-04-2014 07:56 AM

Sorry to hear that. Courtney tares it up.

djchameleon 04-04-2014 07:59 AM

I loved Cougar Town but for Busy Phillips.

Goofle 04-04-2014 08:17 AM

She is annoying, but dude. Allow it.

LoathsomePete 04-04-2014 08:26 AM

Homicide: Life on the Streets > The Wire

Oh also Gravity Falls > every other children's show that adults watch

Larry Sanders better then Seinfeld? GTFO Shandling is more annoying then Fran Drescher.

My wife just got me the full Homicide boxed set for my birthday. I'm really looking forward to watching it.

Goofle 04-04-2014 08:42 AM

I got that for my Dad for Christmas. The only issue with the one I have (may be the same as yours) is that when you click on an episode it shows you screen caps which sometimes contain slight spoilers.

Grrr… I hate when they do that. My Twilight Zone DVDs are like that. Talk about the worst possible show to have plot spoilers for.

dreadman 04-04-2014 09:11 AM

So, I guess I can get the following off my chest: TV has simply been going down hill since M*A*S*H :-)

Totally. A lot of shows try to do the whole "quirky friends who say douchey things about everybody" thing, but Cougar Town is the only one that also keeps their characters likable.

And I want Busy Phillips to abort my children.

We're currently living in what is arguably the greatest era of television since it was invented so I'm going to have to disagree.
