The MB Film Club

I've been reading a lot of back issues of Cahiers du Cinema lately and find it really interesting how big a deal film clubs used to be. There seems to be an influx of members who are really passionate about movies recently, and given the success of some of the album clubs - this just makes sense.
I think the best way to figure out how we'll do this would be to discuss at first, rather than have me make all the rules. I think we should decide two things.
Should we select a film weekly or biweekly?
Will we choose the films through a nomination/voting process or my preferred technique where all the regulars take turns to choose a film?
We'll try to keep the films Netflix friendly so there aren't any problems with availability.

I will try my damnedest to be a part of this. And I'd say bi-weekly. Gives people a week to find time for the film, then another week to find time to give their thoughts.

Machine 12-17-2014 07:22 AM

I'm in I've always loved watching movies I agree with Goofle on the bi-weekly thing.

Frownland 12-17-2014 07:25 AM

I'm in. Also agree on the biweekly method, and I think we should do a rotation of who gets to select films.

Goofle 12-17-2014 07:41 AM

Go in order of comments? James first.

DeadChannel 12-17-2014 07:43 AM

Bi weekly sounds good, although I may not be able to always take part (internet connection issues)
I'm not sure how I feel about keeping it to Netflix. A lot of really essential stuff is not on there, and probably never will be on there. Also, Netflix's selection varies by country (ie. Jack **** in canada), which would make it even more difficult

WWWP 12-17-2014 09:46 AM

I'd love to join in. Also agree with taking turns choosing films rather than voting.

Unblock-Us - smarter faster VPN

$5 a month, and it works like a charm.

I'd love to join the club, but I really can't commit the time right now. Sorry, James. Maybe down the road.

Goofle 12-17-2014 11:24 AM

There's free ways to change your VPN (Hola is what I use) but they do have a bad rep. I don't really care about that.

DeadChannel 12-17-2014 11:32 AM

Nevertheless, netflix is a bit limiting.
95% of the films that I'd suggest aren't on netflix (american or otherwise)
We could link to the film on itunes, although most people will probably get the film via.... other means... anyway.

Oriphiel 12-17-2014 11:42 AM

I'd like to throw my hat in as well! Bi-weekly is fine by me.

Chrysalis 12-17-2014 11:45 AM

I've recently been getting back into films, so I'm in.

I'm also not entirely sure about limiting suggestions to stuff on Netflix. I'm not denying that there's a decent selection of films on there, but, like DeadChannel, there are some films that I'd like to suggest that aren't on there.

Machine 12-17-2014 11:48 AM

I do not have Netflix so that's out for me

EPOCH6 12-17-2014 11:50 AM

I'll jump in on this too.

simplephysics 12-17-2014 12:16 PM

Unless everyone is willing/able to pirate, or buy, a movie every other week, I'm not sure how this can be successful if we don't stick to Netflix. Or at least movies that can be streamed online for free somewhere.

EPOCH6 12-17-2014 12:22 PM

Anybody here unwilling to pirate movies?

Frownland 12-17-2014 01:59 PM

If someone can find a good source for the movies I'm down to go criminal with it. I don't pirate movies too often because so many of the things that come up in a search lead to ****.

Not everyone Netflix, and Netflix has **** selection. I was involved in a thing like this before on irc. Everyone was able to arrange ways to get the films. I see no prohlem with going ahead outside of netflix.

I'm not sure how you not having Netflix changes anything. You would have to source the film yourself regardless.

His vote would still go to us finding things ourselves, though. No reason why he would want to limit himself.

Personally, 9/10 times I can't get fast enough internet to stream, so you know where my vote goes.

Oriphiel 12-17-2014 03:46 PM

So i'm guessing James gets to pick the first movie, since this was his idea in the first place?

DeadChannel 12-17-2014 03:50 PM

I'm cool with that. Are we going to pick a new name out of a hat every two weeks, or what?

Oriphiel 12-17-2014 04:00 PM

I'm sure we can make a list or something. We could just do it so that it's in the order that people joined.

If your connection isn't fast enough to stream a movie I'm not sure how downloading films is going to be any easier for you.

Goofle 12-17-2014 04:53 PM

James is first. Then we go by order of posters in the thread (unless James disagrees, since it's his idea). Pick a film that's preferably on Netflix, and not so obscure that people will have trouble getting a copy of if they can't via Netflix (Unless you can provide a link yourself).

And if you can't get a hold of the film for whatever reason, I'd guess you probably won't be able to share your thoughts on it.

Thelonious Monkey 12-17-2014 04:55 PM

I'm up for it. I use Netflix as well, and if something isn't on the UK version, Hola comes in handy. I would probably use a region finder too see if the movie is available in Mexico or something. Countries like Mexico seem to always get all the good stuff. If not, I'll just stream it online, or maybe rent it from Blinkbox. All is good. Are we doing a rotation of who picks or something?

simplephysics 12-17-2014 04:58 PM

For those without Netflix, ever consider bullying a friend or relative into giving you their login info? :p

No, because I'm THAT friend.

Goofle 12-17-2014 05:03 PM

I dunno exactly how it works, but you can create a few profiles for other people. That's how I get it anyway.

Because I can spend like four hours downloading, then watch all the way through.

Or, more likely, download at school.

That's fair enough, but I'd be careful about pirating media from a school server.

DeadChannel 12-17-2014 09:01 PM

Yeah, I know, but I think I've got it pretty well covered.

James 12-18-2014 09:58 AM

I've missed four pages because I am currently at home for the holidays and too busy stuffing my face and getting drunk :D
Glad so many people are on board for this and in agreement over the biweekly arrangement and the listed ordering!
I will choose a film for tomorrow. I don't use Netflix, I'm an infamous pirate. I will still browse the catalogue and find something good for discussion!

Exo 12-18-2014 01:49 PM

Jesus Christ, have any of you people even HEARD of this thing called a library? I don't know if it's just near me but the 5+ libraries I have gone to have great DVD selections. Netflix is great, but those who don't have it aren't as screwed as you think.

Bring it on James.

Altered_Bacon 12-18-2014 04:31 PM

I'm in. I love watching movies ever since I started watching horror and action films. Of course I don't have Netflix but I do have ways of my own to watch films. Plus this will get me a chance to watch some movies I haven't been able to catch up on.

That is an option for some people as well.

Honestly, there are enough ways to get movies that the netflix thing shouldn't matter.

Ninetales 12-18-2014 05:17 PM

ok I would like to try and take part in this. im pretty flaky tho so we'll see if I can actualy commit to it

James 12-18-2014 05:40 PM

Libraries are a great shout Exo, personally that's where I get most of my films. My university library has a beautiful selection and I've been working alphabetically for months, discovering so much!
Hulu Plus has the Criterion Collection, so that's also worth a look in.
Is everyone okay with foreign language films?

Frownland 12-18-2014 05:46 PM

If anyone isn't, tough shit.
