Default [BONUS POLL] MB Video Game Classics: DOOM

Quite possibly one of the best games ever made in this genre. It's so good. I'm giving this an instant classic right away.

Never played Doom besides Brutal Doom and a bit of Doom 3 but Doom 3 came with Doom and Doom 2 so Imma have to see what all the fuss is about.

Man, it's some good ****. One of the very first examples of what it could mean to just be in Hell and shoot baddies. I had many good times playing it back in the day.

I've played Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom (a standalone Doom 2 map pack) more than most games. At least in terms of how often I used to boot them up.

There really isn't any old school FPS where the balance between different sorts of enemies and weapon types is so well thought out. I will say that Doom 2 improved significantly on Doom, by adding some interesting new enemies, adding 1 new weapon that changes the whole game since you will use it very often and generally having much more interesting map design than Doom did.

I think Doom is a good 8/10, but Doom 2 is more like a 9/10.

Most fun way to play Doom for me these days is to use the map select cheat code on ultra violence difficulty, then just try to complete various maps without allowing myself to save, starting each with no weapons.

Kind of repetitive - like many action games from the DOS days - but good fun in up to 1½ hour doses.

Wolfenstein 3D for the SNES was my entry into first-person shooters, but Doom certainly was the top pick of the genre around this time. Probably played Doom on the SNES first, but I went looking to explore this genre more on the PC, because you had to experience this on a computer lest you be a gaming pleb; the difference in computing power versus consoles was much greater back then.

This game was very speedy and it had inventive weapons and monsters/enemies/bosses, so it very much lived up to its creepy vibe. I only take some points off because going around aimlessly shooting at things and trying to find hidden walls gets repetitive and boring without a little spy action à la Goldeneye and similar ilk.

I'm ranking this based on my personal take on playing it, but I might rank it higher based on its historical impact on gaming if that were the consideration.

There's no right way to play Doom, but I'd advocate for a speed run style of play. Get to the end alive as fast as possible. Don't try to kill or find everything. That's much more fun in my opinion, but your mileage may vary.

I played Wolfenstain back in the day too. I've completed all 6 official episodes at least 3 times. I played through the whole thing again just a year or two ago. Wolfenstein 3D is honestly a little too simplistic, but I get the itch to play it again every few years.

I spent a lot of time playing Doom in my friend’s dorm room freshman year of college. First video game to ever give me motion sickness.

I don't get motion sickness from that, but some modern games hit me hard. I once watched my brother play Motorstorm and I went green in the face after a few minutes.
