Horror Movies

I'm shocked that a thread on this does not exist, as I'm pretty sure there's at least a handful of members here that are passionate about this genre. Plus, it's flipping October so this is a perfect time to start such a thread.

Horror is far and away my favorite genre of film, and the vast majority of films I watch in my limited free time are in this genre. This definitely leads to me neglecting other genres, but damn it horror just brings me too much joy to ever stop watching it.

There's so much great horror out there from every decade, but we're in the middle of an excellent time for the genre right now. The 2010's have had some absolutely killer releases: Let the Right One In, I Saw the Devil, Train to Busan, The Invitation, It Follows, The VVitch, The Babadook, Get Out, Hereditary, Sinister...hell even the IT remake was awesome. Every year there's been at least a couple releases that have absolutely blown me away. Hopefully the new Halloween coming out this month amazes me yet again.

I'll write up some mini-reviews throughout the next month to hopefully foster some discussion. I've seen way too many horror movies and probably some that other fans haven't seen and vise versa, so let's talk about em!

off the top of my head Rosemary's Baby is the only "horror" movie that shook me

Calvaire

If I ruled the world (scary premise, I know), this would be canon. It's a great, bleak, and slightly humourous take on the Deliverance/TCM brand of horror (even though Deliverance isn't really horror--I'm just saying that there's rednecks basically, French rednecks). I've always been a big fan of this film's character development and atmosphere.

oh actually this one too (requires subtitle reading):

I'ma take a stroll through the horrors I've rated on RYM, it's the most abundant genre. Just some I rated highly not counting the obvious ones like Alien or the Thing.

ハウス [House] - So unhorrory that it's in fact extraordinarily horrory. Light and vibrant Japanese ass **** juxtaposed with so many unnerving elements. One of a kind through and through.

À meia-noite levarei sua alma [At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul] - Powerfully gothic business culminating in a showdown with God itself. Kinda. Some intense and otherworldly forces.

Bone Tomahawk - Wouldn't be afraid to call this the most badass movie ever though. Western horror is such a sparse thing though you'd think otherwise. They pretty much compliment each other perfectly. The bleak Western tropes are presented with a constant air of doom, and even one of the best splatters ever at the end.

Eyes of Fire - Interesting that the next choice was another Westernish horror, but not all deserty. Woodsy. It's quite unusual in premise, sets, and scares.

Orlacs Hände [The Hands of Orlac] - I wish I could remember enough to better describe it, but it's sick on a Caligarian level.

Quella villa accanto al cimitero [The House by the Cemetery] - Seems to be loved lesser than a lot of other Fulci films and not raved about madly. So I guess it's underrated. This one though, I found genuinely scary in a good amount of scenes.

The Witch - One of the best modern horrors no doubt. I should watch it again right this second.

Les yeux sans visage [Eyes Without a Face] - Quite a lovely piece and a special selection of my repertoire. Almost constantly unnerving thanks to the mask our faceless lady wears, right out of the uncanny value. She just wants a new face, but it's hard to come by the perfect one.

回路 [Pulse] - Gave me some mad chills. You should be frightened of the internet, some **** goes down there. Obscured figures and deep ambient impacts in abundance.

I bought the Criterion edition of House on a whim. I watched it once then hid it on the shelf behind Man Bites Dog.

Blair Witch was the first “found footage” flick I saw in the theatre. The viral marketing campaign got me and my friends super hyped. After seeing it I remember thinking, “That was fûcking awesome! I guess just about anyone can make a movie.”

So it was an inspiration of sorts.

Chris Rock on Blair witch: they made that movie for $10,000?!?! someone out there is walking around with $9,990 in their pocket!

My nuts hurt after this.

I don't understand the love for The Witch. I watched it and was not scared by it at all. It was also boring with the continuous dialogue between the characters I don't care about.

Same goes for The Cabin In The Woods. The acting was god awful and the story was super cliche. Not sure why it's beloved.

Okay, so The Witch didn't catch you. I get that.

But what exactly about the story of Cabin in the Woods is cliche?

The Batlord 10-10-2018 07:59 PM

The story was supposed to be cliche. It was a spoof.

I'm really trying to see if kiiii watched the whole movie.

Or is just joking.

Or is an idiot.

I didn't know any of that going in. I watched like half of it.

You're an idiot. Watch the second half of the movie.

Key 10-10-2018 08:03 PM

More like ignorance but thanks. All I knew about the movie is that people loved it. I never picked up on that it was a spoof.

You should really watch the entirety of movies before wondering why people love it so much is all I'm saying.

Key 10-10-2018 08:06 PM

I'll give it another shot knowing that but I'm not gonna sit through a movie in its entirety if I'm not enjoying it.

Exo 10-10-2018 08:07 PM

It's like saying...

"From Dusk Til Dawn was just a kidnapping movie. What's the big deal? After I jerked off to Salma Hayek, I went to sleep. I don't see the big deal."

"I wish they would like go after the shark in a boat or something in Jaws. Boring. Don't get it."

"Seven was okay but it'd be better if like Kevin Spacey was in it or something."

Key 10-10-2018 08:08 PM

Fair enough

I think you sat through like 20 minutes though. The reveal in Cabin in the Woods happens relatively early.

Key 10-10-2018 08:12 PM

I must've missed it then because I don't remember any sort of reveal.

Well go back to it when you have the chance.

Key 10-10-2018 08:14 PM

I actually do want to. I don't think I was in the right mindset to enjoy it. I genuinely mean that. I'll give it a shot.

Even if you end up not liking it, it is still a very very unique movie. It'll at least be something you've never seen before.

Key 10-10-2018 08:16 PM

I did think it was somewhat unique but let's remember it's been a few years since I saw it. Plus I didn't watch I alone. That may have been a factor. Not excusing it, just a reason.

Kiiii, I don't mean to be picking on you, but you have described this movie as being super cliche and somewhat unique now. Please make up your mind lol.

The Batlord 10-10-2018 08:18 PM

What exactly do you think the movie is about, Kiiii?

I already said I'll give it another shot. I remember literally nothing about the movie. I just remember not liking it because I thought it was cliche. That's all I can say. I'll watch it again.

The Batlord 10-10-2018 08:24 PM

Maybe next time get past the first 15 minutes.

Key 10-10-2018 08:24 PM

If anybody but Exo told me to watch it again, I'd decline. I respect his opinion about movies over anybody here. If he thinks I'll like it, I'll try it.

The last 20 minutes of Cabin in the Woods is some of the most wildly insane and satisfying **** you will ever watch

grindy 10-11-2018 07:45 AM

Literally the first scene in Cabin In The Woods lets you know, that there's more to it, than your standard teen horror.

Key 10-11-2018 08:12 AM

I'll watch it again dudes. I think I'll enjoy it more now than I did. The hype for it does help so I'm definitely gonna watch it soon. Possibly this weekend. I'll letcha know the result.
