Goofle11's Twenty Fourteen Listening Log

After a pretty uninspiring 2013 in terms of music for myself, I decided I should use the new year to reinvigorate my interest in discovering music - old and new - as well as starting a proper journal that isn't the drizzling shits.

I will use this journal, alongside the actual listening log, to chronicle any album that I have listened to which is new to me during the year. Obviously I won't be updating this after every album, but I will try my darndest to keep on top of it.

#2014JournalOfTheYear

WWWP 01-01-2014 04:11 PM

Awesome!

Paedantic Basterd 01-01-2014 04:13 PM

I tried this once and it was impossible to keep on top of. Good luuuuuuck!

Goofle 01-01-2014 04:15 PM

I am a man of little to fewer words, so it should be okay :)

Taxman 01-01-2014 04:36 PM

That is gonna be great. Maybe I'm gonna discover something new too because of your journal. Keep them comin', we'll be ready.

Goofle 01-02-2014 04:44 PM

So here we go.

Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks - Moldy Basement Tapes Vol. 1 (2010)

Anybody familiar with this band/Lonesome Wyatt's solo work will have a pretty good idea of what their "Moldy Basement Tapes" would sound like. And it sounds like what you think they would sound like.

Above average, but I just eat this shit up. Not for everyone.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://tvfornothing.files.wordpress....mmycarter1.jpg

Jay Munly - Jimmy Carter Syndrome (2002)

Not close to being my favourite work involving Jay Munly, but far from bad. Would recommend Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots - Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots and Slim Cessna's Auto Club - Always Say Please and Thank You ahead of this.

3/5

----------------------------------------

Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness Cedric Gervais Remix : Single (2013)

This is a quality club banger. But maybe just for when you're in a club (or have a crazy sound system).

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

Vampire Weekend feat. Danny Brown, Himanshu and Despot - Step : Single (2013)

Deanny Brown, Heems, Despot and those Vampire Weekend sukkas. What more can I say? It's totally fucking mint.

4/5

----------------------------------------

http://www.ninebullets.net/wp-images...ingLocusts.jpg

Strawfoot - Chasing Locusts (2007)

Standard Gothic Country business. Probably take a few more listens to really get into it but I do like it a lot.

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/def...?itok=WHwTgJuv

Sons of Perdition - Trinity (2013)

Not the best Gothic Country album you are ever likely to listen to, but it's not bad.

2.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://f0.bcbits.com/img/a1235177790_10.jpg

Coin Locker Kid - The Lars Demos (2012)

Quite quickly becoming one of my favourite Hip Hop artists. Very unique approach instrumentally and lyrically.

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/a6de08135e9...b1/5029205.jpg

Coin Locker Kid - Traumnovelle (2013)

Wow. I mean the guy was already impressing me but Jesus Christ. Most cohesive project to date and simply something unlike anything I have heard before (if you disregard his other projects).

4.5/5

Goofle 01-07-2014 04:38 PM

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/...vanpalace2.jpg

Caravan Palace - Panic (2012)

I really enjoyed their debut and this is pretty much on the same level. Groovy electronic swing music. I am sure there's probably quite a lot of artists doing the same - and if you know some, send them my way - but they are pretty unique to me, and that's always a good thing.

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://cdn.7static.com/static/img/sl...094906_350.jpg

Acoustic Ladyland - Camouflage (2004)

Good album, but nothing genuinely great happens here. Later albums certainly go up another level.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://www.savingcountrymusic.com/wp...e-barnyard.jpg

Rachel Brooke - Down in the Barnyard (2011)

Meh.

I very rarely get into singer-songwriter stuff - especially when country based - and this is no exception. This just doesn't do very much for me. She has a nice voice and it's not bad by any stretch though, so if you do dig that shit, check her out. But much prefer her album with 'The Lonesome Wyatt'.

2.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://cdn.rap-up.com/blog/wp-conten...-hooligans.jpg

Bruno Mars - Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010)

Some great pop tracks here, but quite a bit of filler. Still, quite a lot to take away from an album that I expected to be garbage.

2.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://www.dpmclimbing.com/sites/def...ox-jukebox.jpg

Bruno Mars - Unorthodox Jukebox (2012)

Another so-so effort it seems. Some really good tracks but boring filler for the most part.

2.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/xDM1tJymbuo/hqdefault.jpg

Flying Lotus & Declaime - Whole Wide World (2009) [EP]

Good collection of beats. The two main tracks are good but far from great. Solid, and a project I would like to see revisited at some point.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l4Qui8BUia...ine_Zurich.jpg

Alpine - Zürich (2010) [EP]

Really nice slice of Indie Rock/Pop, and contains the best songs on their 2012album A Is for Alpine.

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://www.qpratools.com/gallery/000...1967-front.jpg

Vashti Bunyan - Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind - Singles and Demos 1964 to 1967 (2007) [Compilation]

Pretty interesting stuff here, but it's just not consistent enough for me to consider it great.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://pascal.ledisque.free.fr/wordp...leupetrole.jpg

Alain Bashung - Bleu pétrole (2008)

I think it's fair to assume that me being unable to understand French hinders my enjoyment of the album, but despite that this is just pretty boring to me.

2.5/5

Goofle 01-07-2014 04:54 PM

Well I know what I'm doing with my night.

GuD 01-07-2014 10:52 PM

Jay Munly is the ****,

looks cool so far dude.

WWWP 01-07-2014 11:43 PM

RE: Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks

Damn dude. I had never heard his/their name before now, but balls man this track is unreal. I’m adding this album to my queue for sure. If the rest of their material is as rad as this I think I may have found a new band to obsess over.

RE: Jay Munly

I dig the melancholic impending doom feel to this song but it didn’t exactly grip me. I’ll probably look into the other albums you suggested rather than this one. I feel like I could get behind his songwriting for sure.

RE: Lana Del Ray

I can take or leave Lana Del Ray but I won’t deny that I enjoy this song.

RE: Vampire Weekend remix

This blows the original track (and the album it belongs to) out of the water. Love it.

RE: Strawfoot

While gothic country business is up my alley this track didn’t grab me. Can see why others would enjoy it, however. Will still check out the album out of curiosity, so I guess that’s a win.

RE: Sons of Perdition

See above.

RE: Coin Locker Kid

Holy ****, dude. I couldn’t find any of his stuff on spotify, or anything from The Lars Demos on youtube and only one from Traumnovelle, but I found some tracks off The Ghost Sonata and just, holy ****. I am so into this. I might be begging you for album links here pretty quickly.

Spoiler for Youtube:

Like, this is so rad. What the ****. Glad you started this project, Clancy. I have a feeling I'll benefit a lot from it.

I’ll write up part two tomorrow.

WWWP 01-07-2014 11:46 PM

Actually I take back what I said about Jay Munly. After a few spins that track's a ****ing grower.

Goofle 01-08-2014 01:15 AM

Coin Locker Kid has a bandcamp Steph. All albums available for free download :)

Also, I am digging the Junkyard Donner's Twenty Fourteen Hearing Log :D

Fulborn Teversham - Count Herbert II (2007)

Pretty cool Jazz-Rock album. Not quite blowing me away but still interesting enough.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...e_Is_Kinky.jpg

Jenny Hval - Innocence Is Kinky (2013)

This is pretty cool but considering how "edgy" she is trying to appear I don't think she quite reaches the level where you can truly appreciate it. Needed to be darker and weirder, this is a little too laden in sugar for me to take seriously. Still, pretty good.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://eil.com/images/main/The+Teard...ORD-193282.jpg

The Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro (1980)

Nothing mind blowing here, but pretty good nonetheless. Could have done with a little more variation.

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

The War on Drugs - Red Eyes (2013) [Single]

Really good song. Instantly reminded me of 'Kurt Vile' in terms of production, and I was not surprised at all to see that he was formerly involved in the project.

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zGfGQjiyyL...th%2BJetts.jpg

Antioch Arrow - In Love With Jetts (1993)

Just not that brutal or interesting for me to really love. It's good I suppose, but nowt special.

Trollheart 01-17-2014 03:24 AM

Goof, i have a question. I'm just wondering: how do you listen to all this music? Much of it seems not to impress you, and I know I usually buy or download albums I think I'll like, and most times I'm right. Not always of course. But how do you get the time to listen to a bunch of albums you seem not to like? Are you buying/downloading everything you see? Are you living on a separate timeline to the rest of us? Have you cloned yourself? Are you, in fact, the Devin Townsend of Music Banter? Only with hair. Presumably.

Goofle 01-17-2014 12:01 PM

I only listen to music that I think will interest me with a few exceptions here and there. Also, I would point out that any album I give a rating of 3 or above is good in my opinion, just varying levels of good :)

Goofle 01-21-2014 03:26 PM

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61ISoPfaewL.jpg

Donso - Denfila (2013)

Fantastic electronic afro-beat album. Hypnotizing without becoming stale and repetitive.

4/5

http://www.goodmusic-chiavari.it/ima...01990-2010.jpg

Robbie Williams - In and Out of Consciousness: The Greatest Hits 1990-2010 (2010) [Compilation]

There's something that I like about Robbie Williams. He has some really good songs. The problem is, he has some really bad songs too. Luckily for me, I just skipped them and ended up liking this quite a bit. But I had to mark it down due to me knowing how much crap is on here.

2.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://cdn.7static.com/static/img/sl...061464_500.jpg

Thumbscrew - Within Hearts of Redemption (2006) [EP]

Pretty cool mathy/grind EP. Short as ****, but has a track with around five minutes of silence after it ends for whatever reason. Left me wanting more.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://helloiugo.files.wordpress.com...D500%26h%3D500

きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ [Kyary Pamyu Pamyu] - なんだこれくしょん [Nanda Collection] (2013)

Super fun album. And just look at that album cover. You have to be some kind of angry person to not enjoy this.

4/5

----------------------------------------

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/660a67775b2...86/2769072.jpg

ハイスイノナサ [Haisuinonasa] - 街について (2009) [EP]

Thoroughly listenable math rock EP. I liked the dreamy vocals a lot, particularly when paired with this style of instrumentation.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://www.metalsucks.net/wp-content..._-_Antenna.jpg

Cave In - Antenna (2003)

Unnecessarily drawn out. Good musicianship and not bad by any means, but fails to grip me.

3/5

----------------------------------------

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FQo24yQcy8...600/Folder.jpg

Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton (1993)

Probably the first example of a Math-Gaze album that I have come across, and it's brilliant. Enough variety to keep me interested and some really great songs.

4/5

----------------------------------------

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-49xmuAbdNX...%2BA%2BCat.jpg

Cranes - Wings of Joy (1991)

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://www.folkwales.org.uk/Magazine...6%20Pepper.png

Zervas & Pepper - Lifebringer (2013)

Pretty cool folk rock deal here. It's not a style of music that I usually gravitate towards but I definitely enjoyed it.

3.5/5

----------------------------------------

http://passionweiss.com/wp-content/u...sh-450x450.jpg

The Underachievers - The Lords of Flatbush (2013) [EP]

This is a fun album with just a few songs that weren't very good. The cloudrap aesthetic is something I love, but the rappers themselves don't quite do it for me overall.

3/5

And yes, I will do a proper review in the "Monthly Music Trading" thread Deej.

----------------------------------------

why dont you just rate stuff out of 10 so its a little more clear on what you like and dont like :P

Goofle 01-29-2014 12:41 PM

The .5's make it essentially the same thing mate. And since I use my RYM page in conjunction with this journal, it makes sense to use their rating scale too.

Thee Oh Sees - Floating Coffin (2013)

Hozier - Take Me to Church (2013) [EP]

Pretty damn good Chamber Pop EP. Hoping these guys release some new material this year. Would like to see a little more edge to them on a full length release, but their sound works great as an EP.

3.5/5

Scrambled Eggs and Friends - Scrambled Eggs and Friends (2010)

This is some cool as fuck noisy jam randomness that I thoroughly dig in parts. The problem is that is gets slightly drawn out (a 21 minute track that doesn't really go anywhere, for example). Still, really interesting.

Glad to see you're getting into Jay Munly. Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots is probably one of the best albums of the last decade, although its length can be a little deterring. Jimmy Carter Syndrome is kind of like a condensed version of it, but I think his later albums really benefited from having a larger strings section. If you haven't checked out his 2010 album Petr & the Wulf I'd highly recommend that.

Definitely start paying attention to this. Only wish I had when you started it.

Goofle 02-13-2014 12:26 PM

I definitely preferred Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots but I need to listen to them again.

And thanks. I am going to compile them into rating brackets in the OP at some point too.

Amerigo Gazaway - Yasiin Gaye: The Departure (Side One) (2014)

This shit is fantastic. Amerigo Gazaway does it again.

Beck - Morning Phase (2014)

Pleasant and boring. Nothing hit me at all. It wasn't awful or even bad for one single second, but it wasn't great at any moment either. Not even 'Blue Moon'.

Houndmouth - From the Hills Below the City (2013)

Now this album was really, really good. The kind of Alt-Country that just lifts you and takes you along on the ride. Fantastic.

Wild Moth - Over, Again (2013)

Good emo stuff. Little repetitive, but I am aware that it's asking too much for a hugely varied emo album.

Aesop Rock - Appleseed (1999) [EP]

So yeah, I actually haven't listened to everything Aesop Rock has released. Good, but nothing special when it comes to his discography.

Aesop Rock - Music for Earthworms (1997)

Yes, yes. I hadn't heard this before. Quit looking at me that way. Really, I am an Aesop Rock fanboy. I AM god damn it.

Avicii - True (2013)

Some decent songs, some trash songs. 'Addicted To You' is my highlight.

Barefoot Dance of the Sea - Beneath Closed Eyes (2012)

This album does not exist to blow minds, and it doesn't. Bland and inoffensive, with elements of smile-inducing songwriting, but just not that good.

The Roaring Girl Cabaret - In Last Night's Party Clothes (2008)

Pretty neat cabaret album. Heard much better, but this is a vibe I vibe with.

A nice little slice of cabaret. Can't get enough of that style of music.

Food for Animals - Belly (2008)

I dig this a lot. Let me rephrase that, I dig what they are going for a lot. Some of it is rather underwhelming though.

Snake Walk - Cheap Cream (2014) [Single]

Really good first single. Loved the instrumentals especially. Avidly anticipating new material.

Some pretty awesome gloomy doomy sludge-y metal here. A little bit fucking long, but I can deal with it.

Well, everything I haven't already heard. And not full listens, just previews. Nothing gets a full spin from me until I've been adequately impressed, nawmsayin.

Immaculate Machine - Fables (2007)

Undoubtedly an "okay" Indie Rock album. Does it move you? Not really. Does it do anything besides have you kinda nod along a little bit? Not really. But can I say I hate any song on it? Not really.

Misophone - Where Has It Gone, All the Beautiful Music of Our Grandparents? It Died With Them, That's Where It Went... (2007)

I've had a hard time rating this album as some of it bores me, but songs like "Seaweed on the Rocks" and "Nothing Down There But Trees" have an unmistakable appeal. I guess I enjoyed it overall, and it would probably grow on me quite a bit if I let it.

Self Defense Family - Try Me (2014)

The Angelique Gauthier parts are pretty great. The rest is so-so post-hardcore garb.

2.5/5

:(

I enjoyed the novelty of the two Angelique interviews and her story is one of great intrigue to me, but I skip those two tracks when I replay the album.
I mean, the concept was a unique one, throwing in the two segments of her life story on an album that at times had little to do with her.
But, I really enjoy the songs. Especially Tithe Pig, Aletta & Nail House Music

I find the band to be very different from everything out there. They have a unique abrasive style which combines with a sense of loathing and insecurity. The lyrics are very creative and the songs tell great stories or convey points very well. Aletta, a song about a girl, that rags on other songs about girls for example is very cleverly done.

I find myself singing the songs to myself and I've enjoyed this record far more than any other this year. To me, it was so refreshing, something new and captivating.

Appreciate your opinion though, from what I've read, reviews have been really mixed. At first, I wasn't entirely convinced by it. I thought it was weird, but it grew on me so hard and I appreciate it's genius. Give it another shot if you feel in that way inclined, if not. It's up to you.

Been meaning to check out some of the higher rated 2014 albums on this list too. You've always got your finger on the pulse to obscure new music. Keep it up.

Goofle 03-18-2014 02:09 PM

I'm slacking for 2014 in all honesty.

And I would also skip the interviews if I were to ever listen to it again. They were quite a nice novelty. But I might give it another chance because on your post.
