Here’s a jazz curiosity that if anyone knows any thing about please fill me the **** in

In 1965 Lee Morgan went into the legendary Van Gelder Studio with Reggie Workman, who was already featured on three Coltrane records and five Art Blakey records, and Billy Higgins, who had all of Ornette’s early classics on his resume. They record an excellent hard bop album of new material but Blue Note decides not to release it until 1981.

Infinity - Lee Morgan

In 81 it had this cool as **** artwork:

Then it goes out of print, probably because hard bop was hardly still in style, which is probably why they designed the cover to look like a fusion record.

Then it’s not released on CD until 98 (as goddamn limited edition) with this cover:

WTF Blue Note?

Thankfully, it’s on Spotify now.

I'm actually listening to a lot of hard bop right now as I'm trying to do a project on my favorite albums of each year. So far, I'm partial to Coltrane and Sonny Rollins (I'm only up to 1958 so far). In fact, give Sonny Rollins' Way Out West a spin. The title track is cool as cucumbers.

If it was recorded in 1965, maybe Morgan didn't want it to be released and the rest can be pinned on changing management.

Maybe. If you can find a link or a source I’d honestly like to know.

Total speculation. Morgan died in 72, so it's a bit of time to hold onto a record and not have plans for it. Maybe they did have plans that they postponed?

Looking at Blue Note's history, both releases were done during different rerelease series so that's why I was thinking that it was different execs heading up different projects.

Saxophone Colossus - 1956
Blue Train - 1958

He may have shot up after the session and forgot about it. Blue Note was pumping out so much incredible stuff that the recording may have gotten filed away and then dug out later. Morgan was a junkie.

Actually Blue Train is my favorite Jazz album so far. I did hear a Love Supreme a few years back and that could be the best jazz album ever. I'll probably be listening to that again as I get into 1965.

If you’re in the mood for something gentle and underrated this is a good one to chillax on:

Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra

Evans comfortably hits the spot with gorgeous orchestration. The critics didn’t appreciate how well it sits together for some reason. It’s substantive music but it’s like come on don’t tell me you don’t like the feel of brand new socks, you know?
