Neurosis - Cold Ascending (1992) [Sludge / Doom]

Probably my fav album by these guys overall just because of how everything is mixed, especially the bass. Not the prettiest hellscape you've ever sat through, but you could do far worse than Enemy Of The Sun.

Uyama Hiroto - South Side (feat. Shing02) (2016) [Jazz-Hop]

One of Shing02's best ever guest spots. Chiller than the moon.

Big Big Train - Last Train (2009) [Progressive Rock]

An album I was obsessed with a bit when it first came out whilst knee deep in my sympho-prog phase. It holds up well 11 years later - probably the best "modern" sounding take of the early Genesis's sound circa Trespass you'll find anywhere. Very rich and pastoral with lots of feelz.

That's a nice track, Anteater, sounding more 1970s than 2009. Good call comparing them to Genesis - but with Sting on vocals.

Sting
???

The vocals sounding so much like Lamb era Peter Gabriel is what makes this such a sweet Genesis rip off.

The thing is though, unless you’ve totally exhausted old Genesis, I can’t quite get why you don’t wouldn’t just listen to the real thing. I mean, I still love the **** out of Lamb. If this is what I’m in the mood for that’s what I listen to... the unassailable original

but... I listen to other knock off bands all the time so yeah ... I get it

It’s uncanny that knocking off Sabbath and The Ramones works so well but Genesis and Led Zep and Rush - their knock off bands are almost always not worth the time.

The White Stripes being an exception for Zep.

Fair enough. Big Big Train do enough things differently on The Underfall Yard and then the English Electric albums that came afterward to justify their existence. The guy singing here, David Longdon, was actually one of the last two people that Genesis auditioned back in the mid 90's after Phil Collins bailed. He didn't make the cut because they didn't want somebody like Peter Gabriel apparently, so they ended up going with that grunge singer Ray Wilson.

Yeah I agree: David Langdon sounds so much like Gabriel it's uncanny to me, plus there's the fluting which just reinforces that old Genesis sound. As to your contention re why listen to BBT and not Genesis? I guess at some point you get Genesis-ed out - there's only so many albums you can listen to, and Gabriel-era you're talking only what, five? So it's nice, for me anyway, to have the tradition carried on by the younger folks. Also, it's always nice to hear new music that recalls old Genesis.

No offence, Lisna, but where did the Sting idea come from? Guy doesn't sound anything like Sumner. Weird man, very weird...

Oh come on. Even I, with Genesis as my number one favourite band of all time, can't listen to them endlessly. Besides, you often ruin great albums by over-listening to them. Like fine wines, they need to be left to mature and then sampled some time later.
