I'd be amazed if this one was playing in a department store, but this one kind of fits your description - no mention of hallways though:

Those "piano notes" you supplied did not help; not a note progression that I recognise.

That's rather a lovely song, but I'm afraid that's not it either. This song is a little too fast-paced to be the one I'm thinking of. I still have it in my head, but whether or not it's a male or female, higher pitched or lower pitched, guitar or piano, hallway or no hallway, is getting a bit blurrier over time. All my other online searches have been fruitless as well.
