QX, I haven’t managed to identify the baseball tune nor the Joan Rivers entrance tune. If you haven’t either then I’m thinking it’s got to be freaking difficult. But like a human with a bone (Trollheart will get that one), I’ll keep my ears open.

Thanks to everyone on MB (mods, oldies and newbies) for inspiring me to carry on. I love and cherish this community.

To ring out the year, here’s an album I’ve become very fond of. Searched for the CD for my car, but I can only find it on vinyl (haven't a clue if it's on spotify). So I’m going to have to buy a turntable and get the record for better sound quality. Reminds me a lot of Madlib.

Yeah I'm glad to hear all of these production themes.

I’ve always been fascinated by a specific type of sound produced by American arrangers between 1975-1978. Themes by Allyn Ferguson & Jack Elliot (known for the Charlies Angels and Starsky and Hutch themes), Billy Goldenberg’s Kojak and Columbo, Oliver Nelson’s Six Million Dollar Man, Mark Snow’s Hart to Hart, Pat Williams’ Streets of San Francisco or Rhythm Heritage’s Theme From S.W.A.T. to name a few. Clearly I’ve missed a lot of other composers of that era such as Schifrin, Mancini, Grusin, J. J. Johnson, Silvestri, Gil Mellé...

But particularly the Allyn Ferguson & Jack Elliot compositions often seem to have a great sound. Variations around a main theme, lots of horn and string arrangements, muted trumpets, fluttering flute runs, bassoon, scratchy wah guitar, and a heavy dose of percussion (including a lot of triangle which I haven’t heard a lot outside that four-year span). Maybe it’s the child in me that refuses to grow up, but I just can’t let go of those few years (even if I wasn't around by then, just).

Some hard working soul has put together as best they can the below soundtrack for “Bnack”, involving Quincy Jones. I’m still trying to find out what “Bnack” is.

Daniel Janin - Hep Taxi
 

It must be time for another funky post on QX's 1980 library/production thread!

Daniel Janin was a French vibraphonist, composer, arranger, and conductor. He worked with the "Melodie en Soul-Sol" label in the 70's and composed some really funky pieces such as Hep Taxi. I don't think the label was used for any sports themes, but it could have been!

This is an album "Vade Retro" he released with JC Pierric in 1974. Not quite sure if it is lounge-jazz or jazz funk, but it is surprisingly groovy in places. No. 1 ‘Black Night’, and no. 3 ‘Saramina‘ are apparently library funk.

Three production tracks from Sonoton, Chappell and Bruton music libraries which I've kind of had on repeat lately.

I'm not a sampler, but I think it's fantastic that plenty of folk sample their favourite passages and breaks into more modern hip-hop and rap tracks. Sometimes, all it takes is a couple of bars for the sparks to fly.

Paul Kuhn - Gateway To Crime (1974)
 

A delightful funky tune by Paul Kuhn. I could listen to this one for hours.
He was involved in a lot of TV and film music in the 60s and 70s primarily with SFB Big Band (the orchestra of the Sender Freies Berlin, the TV-Station of West Berlin). He was also the conductor of the German entry in the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. It's nice to see Eurovision get a mention from time to time.
