I think it's just hit me how incredible the whole undertaking is in this context.

Bowie laid bare his battle with cancer and his proximity to death right under our noses without our realisation, and consequently, the album becomes a chilling and triumphant obituary that seals a legacy forever. Watching the videos back for Lazarus and Blackstar now is so strange and dark, but so emotive at the same time.

That image in the Blackstar video of the dead starman with the jewelled skull is pretty unnerving.

I wonder whether there was ever another musician who was able to leave like that.
The only comparable thing that comes to mind was Mercury's "The Show Must Go On".
Oh, and Cash's version of "Hurt", although I don't think his death was as imminent as the other two's.

I haven't given Bowie that much of my time, but I'm currently downloading a bunch of his ****, and this album will be up first. Time to fill this massive gap in my music knowledge.

This album is really neat, the atmosphere and everything, the jazz, really ties it in nicely together. Will give this some more listens sometime soon.
