Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want

Rhode Island based noise rock band Daughters comes back with their first album in eight years to quite a bit of praise, including my own. I have yet to listen to it a second time (which is the time when it usually sets in and I can accurately rate it), but the first listen for me was quite the trip nonetheless. I definitely thought it was worth putting up a poll about.

Anyone else got opinions on this beast? Feel free to rate it out of 5 as well, if I'm setting up the poll right that is.

Looks like I'll be getting my vinyl copy on Monday. I'll discuss this with you then.

Exo 10-27-2018 06:27 PM

IT CAME EARLY AND SO DID I.

Starts off like a slow descent into a dark f*cking chamber of death. Dark dark claustrophobic record. Dark lyrics that sound almost Michael Gira like. Spastic explosions subbed by lighter yet sinister tracks. Great instrumentation. Gothic in parts. Really invokes some evil feelings. I feel like going outside in the dark and cold and just smashing something. There's layers to this too. I'm going to have to go through a few listens to really get the most out of this but so far it has potential to be the album of the year for me.

Crazy crazy production on this too. Heavy on drums and light on guitars but that makes me feel like the guitars are like an itch in the back of your head that you can't shake. Really cool feel to it. Ocean Song in particular just has CRAZY production. Insane things going on.

Incredible. I have to digest this. More thoughts to come.

Heard some of this Daughters album today. Pretty interesting sound and it's gnarly.

I think Elph would like it, actually, for real.

The Batlord 10-27-2018 06:45 PM

I rate it a Phat on the Rad Scale.

Isn't Phat better than Rad?

The Batlord 10-27-2018 06:51 PM

Rad isn't a choice on the Rad Scale.

I mean wa'n't no Free Space but it was schmoozin'.

Naaaaaaas.

This song literally makes it tough to breathe afterwards. Insane. What an ending.

Frownland 10-30-2018 01:40 PM

Great record, gave it a 5. Gotta say that I'm a bit confused by the widespread positive reception though, seems to have come out of nowhere.

The Batlord 10-30-2018 01:46 PM

It hits hard out of the gate and doesn't require much effort to like right off the bat.

It's the #1 release for 2018 on RYM right now. Probably won't stay there but it's top 10 for sure. It was highly anticipated, immaculately produced and just a f*cking freight train of a record.

I know it because of Fantano. A weekly track round up video, I think.

Zhanteimi 10-30-2018 10:41 PM

Voted it ☠ because ½☠ wasn't an option.

MicShazam 10-31-2018 12:52 AM

Didn't vote anything because I haven't heard the whole thing, but what I did hear was fire.

He likes Mumford and Sons.

Zhanteimi 10-31-2018 07:11 PM

Mumford and Sons are good, but they're losing their appeal the more I delve into other things. This Daughters album, however, is ugly. For many people (who are ugly inside), this is a feature. For me, it's not. I hated this album from the very beginning. This is the kind of shit Batman plays in his Batmobile. This is the kind of music kids listen to when they build LEGOs only in black or very very dark grey.

The Batlord 10-31-2018 08:37 PM

Having dealt with you for years now I can confidently say that you are no Sophia Loren on the inside.

Zhanteimi 10-31-2018 08:43 PM

I should hope not!

Superficial.

Everyone has ugly guts

Plus, we all have skeletons inside of us, and if I've learned anything from movies and games, it's that skeletons are evil

So you're saying they're entry level folk for people who don't care about folk?

A preference for dark, aggressive music is linked somewhat with youth (not only, but predominantly), but I don't see it as being linked with being ugly inside or something. Dissonance and minor chords can be beautiful too.

Personally, I do feel generally like listening to less of that sort of music by now.

Zhanteimi 11-01-2018 06:49 PM

I think Marcus Mumford writes profound lyrics, actually, but you have to have ears to understand them. However, the music is growing ever more....trite to me.

Let me get in your guts and I'll tell you how ugly they are, baby.

Batty's not-so-veiled bi-curiosity is arousing.

Sounds like a load of "to be fair, you have to have a fairly high IQ" hooplah to me.

Also it seems to me that you're excising Daughters simply cause of their edginess.

Zhanteimi 11-01-2018 07:40 PM

I didn't mean it that way. It's not about IQ at all. His lyrics are not even close to erudite. The "have ears to hear" line references not having a heart of stone.

When I reference the "IQ" bit the purpose of it is that you're claiming your brand of music essentially has superiority over another for superficial and subjective reasons. I believe it's a misguided approach.

Zhanteimi 11-01-2018 07:43 PM

Anyway, back to Daughters!

windsock 11-01-2018 07:46 PM

I never keep my back to my daughters. Who knows what they could be up to?

MicShazam 11-02-2018 12:41 PM

OMG the music sounds so much like Dir En Grey. Love it!

4/5

Quite like it.

#Zhanteimiiswrong

I mean there's several moments here that are straight up gorgeous. It's like Dir En Grey + Depeche Mode + I don't know, some noise rock band...

Exo 11-02-2018 01:02 PM

You're not obligated to like this album but I would just argue that in no way was this supposed to be anything but ugly. It's like saying Swans is cool but I wish it was more upbeat and positive. Not the point of it really.

Good way of phrasing it.

But I still don't think this beats Crumbling as AOTY but I also disagree with /mu/ chuckle****s who think people think that it is are doing it just because Fantano told them to is ridiculous. It's a damn fine piece of work and the best the band's ever done.

Frownland 11-02-2018 01:12 PM

Their s/t is still my favourite, but I'm glad that they're evolving and not trying to mimic their past selves.

I think that the awesomeness (as in inspiring literal awe) of an uncompromising atmosphere like on this album is somewhat adjacent to beauty though.
