Lady Gaga has been around for a while although she has kind-of exploded on the scene at the moment. The fanaticism behind her release of 'Bad Romance' has been a bit ridiculous. But before she became so 'big' she was a singer/songwriter and her music was pretty much just her voice and her piano and no crazy acts or weird facades she seems to sport now. She is a really talented musician but I'm really not a fan of her stuff and the direction she chose to take with her music...

I respect her talent, though, and her campaigns and activism with gay rights and such.

But yeah, you're right, she just kind-of exploded and is all your hear about everywhere at the moment.

I first heard of Lady Gaga on MusicBanter when I saw there is a popular thread about her, but I didn't investigate her music until my curiosity about what you, Vanilla, and AwwSugar were posting inspired me to read up on her and Glam rock, and listen to some of her songs.

I agree with you about her activism in support of gay/bi/transgender rights. Her music, though...hmm. I listened to three of her songs, "Just Dance," "Poker Face," and "Paparazzi," and the first 2 didn't do much for me, though I did like the sound of "Paparazzi," and I do like her voice.

However, I found the "Paparazzi" video to be much more memorable than the music because of all the shocking and disturbing ways it shows her murdered. In fact, several hours after watching the video, I couldn't remember anything about the sound of the song (or the lyrics), just the images from the video. Now when I think of the song "Paparazzi" all I can think of are a hanging woman's dangling legs...and that quirky yellow mouse outfit...and the dance with the crutches (which I liked, by the way!).

I know Lady Gaga loves fashion...and that shows in the video...but I wonder if perhaps the video (and her fashion interest, in general) outshines the music. To me the song sounds like something I'd hear in the background of some B-rated James Bond movie...goes in one ear, sounds interesting with a grinding beat and sweetness plus harshness, but then quickly goes out the other ear because there wasn't much subject matter in the lyrics for me to think about.

Erica, I know exactly what you mean about her video.
I remember this video. I remember that I had no idea who was singing it.
I just had pictures of her on the wheelchair.

Ahhhh, yes, fads, anyone remember Milli Vanilli.... they were a fad. It's kinda alll determined by what the cool kids are saying is cool... so it could be total garbage but if the voices of "cool reason" say it' the stuff, then it's the stuff.

Of course it' possible that just made no sense whatsoever...lol..... I'm reeeaaaalllllyyy tired tonight!

I'm not one to know what's cool, but damn she is incredible to me. I am obsessed. I'm loving her re-release album Fame Monster. Got flights booked for seeing her in March, life is good.

Heh heh...no argument with you here, AwwSugar!

Speaking of Lady Gaga's videos...and maybe you'll know the answer to this, Vanilla...I just noticed that over the last couple days it seems that all the Youtube videos of her were removed (like the one I embedded several posts up)! Was this due to actions of Lady Gaga? I read she called some people "mother****ers" recently due to the leaking of some videos of hers. Is this somehow related to the recent disappearance of her YouTube videos??

A second question related to Lady Gaga's videos: do you fault her videos for showing (dramatic) sexual violence toward women? I ask this because, since I couldn't watch "Paparazzi" again, I watched a related video, which was a documentary *about* videos such as hers. The documentary film-maker argued convincingly that song videos may perpetuate a society in which violence toward women is common. For example, in 2004 men in a crowded Central Park in New York sexually and physically accosted a large number of women, doing many things seen in music videos (ripping off the women's clothes, fondling their breasts, spraying them with water hoses and beer). This made me ask myself to what degree sexualized images of women, such as Lady Gaga uses, perpetuate violence toward them.

Since studies of kids have shown that they tend to be more violent after watching violent TV, I assume that people tend to mirror what they see (and like) in videos they admire.

I find that many of her videos tend to sexualise topics like rape and anorexia. I don't know however if this is Gaga's doing or if she had little control over the production of the videos, but despite admiring Lady Gaga for many of her talents I do find the sexualisation of anorexia and rape in her videos (see: Bad Romance) to be a little unsettling.

Also, I'd just like to point out that most modern studies of children have failed to show that they will be more violent after watching violent TV. The bobo doll studies which were executed decades ago were very flawed, and more recent studies into children/ violence/ the media have shown that children will not typically be violent after interacting with violent media formats unless they already had some kind of underlying issue relating to violence and to their need to act violent.

We're not passive sponges that just soak up everything we see on television, but are instead active and interactive users who will question what we see. That being said however, does not completely rule out the fact that electronic media will affect people. And yeah, a lot of Gaga's video clips have been controversial, most disturbing to me the sexualisation of rape and eating disorders, and since I do admire Lady Gaga to some degree I would like to know what she'd have to say about that.
