What's Your Favourite Cover Version?

With the recent cover version of "Run" by Leona Lewis knocking spots off the original by Snow Patrol, some others came to mind-

Depeche Mode- Personal Jesus- Marilyn Manson
Hall And Oates- I Can't Go For That/ Sunrise- Simply Red
Barry Ryan- Eloise- The Damned
Cameo- Word Up- Korn
Dobie Gray- The In Crowd- Bryan Ferry

So What's Your Favourite?

Kram3r 03-30-2009 10:37 PM

One that's standing out ATM is Sonic Youth's cover of the Carpenter's song, Superstar.

Roygbiv 03-30-2009 10:46 PM

Patti Smith's cover of Gloria is the only cover I've ever loved.

Dieselboy 04-02-2009 09:56 PM

Its hard to choose cause they're so many cool covers I've come across..

Chilren of Bodom doing Somebody Put Something In My Drink (Ramones)

and

Pennywise covering Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison)

...are a couple that I've heard and really liked lately.

jackhammer 04-04-2009 09:29 AM

Trickys version of Public Enemy's Black Steel is still the standard that other cover versions should aspire too. If you are going to cover a song then put your own spin on it and thats exactly what he did.

FaSho 04-04-2009 09:42 AM

I'd like to throw out Nirvana covering "The Man who Sold The World", even though it's a cliche.

Bulldog 04-04-2009 09:44 AM

Here's five that spring to mind;

The Fall - I'm Going To Spain
Elvis Costello - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down
The Pogues - The Recruiting Sergeant/Rocky Road To Dublin/Galway Races
Rolling Stones - Stop Breaking Down
Captain Beefheart - Diddy Wah Diddy

No one has mentioned Between the Buried and Me's cover album. The entire album is pretty good, but there are a few mentionable songs from The Anatomy of:. They do a little bit of everything. My favorites are between their versions of Queen's "Bicycle Race" and Pink Floyd's "Us and Them".

jackhammer 04-04-2009 10:15 AM

I didn't mention BTBAM because they are awful :D

We'll, once again, you leave me to resort to this lame one-liner:

We're all entitled to our own opinions.

PS

..and when smileys are on the end of sentences it means chill out a little and go with the flow!

Ohh noooo. Worst song in Juno, which didn't have a very good soundtrack to begin with.

Aww, did my lack of smile faces throw you off? I promise I was being nice.

The Revolting Cocks cover of Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" is a longtime favorite of mine:

jackhammer 04-04-2009 02:30 PM

The video is absolutely genius :D

Yeah only available on VHS. The guy I went to see ministry with last year has it and I'm still waiting for my DVD conversion :(

spark10036 04-04-2009 04:07 PM

Steven Wilson's cover of "Thank U" (originally by Alanis Morissette) is my fav...he owns it!

SydMM 04-04-2009 08:48 PM

I like all of Marilyn Manson's covers cause he always puts a cool dark twist to it. Then again, I'm totally bias about him.

I definitely think the whole Kimya catalogue (on that soundtrack and in general) is worse than that song. What don't you like about it? I don't usually fall for the whole "dark" tone thing, but I loved how they pulled it off in that song. They definitely made it their own instead of trying to sound like them or stick within the nature of the song (which Sonic Youth wouldn't do anyway, but I thought it was worth mentioning).

Also, I'd like to add Ben Fold's cover of In Between Days by The Cure.

FaSho 04-05-2009 04:34 AM

Honestly, I can'tstand Sonic Youth.

I really want to hear that Ben Folds cover though, considering it's my favorite Cure song, being covered by one of my favorite musicians.

I love BTBAM, but that album is a disgrace.

I think it exposes them more as diverse musicians. I can't say I like all the songs on there, either, but it takes a wide-range of talent to mimic some of those songs like they did. I don't see it so much as 'Here are the songs that we like', but BTBAM presenting to their fans the influences and appreciation for the songs/bands they covered. I'm sorry you couldn't appreciate this album as I did, but everyone has their opinion.

I also enoyed this album. Only the Blind Melon cover was face palm worthy. The rest were great cover songs.

Is that the same thing as a face-push?

If it is, we're going to be great friends.

Yes it's something done out of discuss or dishonor. I was apalled by that song.

Yeah, it's a killer cover. I actually wish he played it live when I saw him here in Sydney. I did however get an awesome, one in a lifetime, Steve Irwin dedicated Rock This Bitch, considering he only died days prior. In Between Days is like my second favourite Cure song, the first being, going for the cliche here, Just Like Heaven. Also, on that note, I want to add another awesome cover. Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of Just Like Heaven. I don't think you'll like it though, considering you don't like Sonic Youth.

gunnels 04-07-2009 10:00 PM

I enjoy Metallica's cover of "Stone Cold Crazy" simply because of how James' vocals are so out of place.
Stone Cold Crazzzy y'know.

Dr_Rez 04-07-2009 10:56 PM

That drummer does have some ****ing talent though. Some of those beats at the end were tough with the tom/snare work. Not to mention some fills I really havnt heard before.

Thrice 04-08-2009 12:43 AM

When I was younger the greatest cover ever was Thrice-Genie in a bottle.

Havent heard a real great cover in years.

controlthedemon 04-08-2009 02:18 PM

The maine - I wanna love you

peterbaby7 04-24-2009 09:06 AM

Jay Chou - On The Run

333 04-24-2009 09:15 AM

I've been diggin' on the Easy Star Allstars lately: Dub Side of the Moon and their latest Sgt. Pep's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I think they're right on with the Darkside cover, but I've only listened to the Sgt. Peps cover once. They're a couple I think are off. Perhaps I need another listen ..

ChiliColdBlood 04-24-2009 09:42 AM

For me it's not even close, Tool's "No Quarter" cover is my favourite.
