I love Ringo too. But Hal Blaine is a master-capable of a wide range of styles. Ringo is great, and the perfect drummer for the Beatles, but even John Lennon himself was quoted as saying "best drummer in the world? Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles"(or words to that effect). Though I think he was trying to court controversy and not being completely honest.

I read that he never actually said that. I also read that he was just joking.

I was just looking at all the number one songs that Hal Blaine played on, man that's an impressive resume. I appreciate you bringing that to my attention because I didn't even know who he is. Now I do. Obviously, you know more about the two but I have a special place in my heart for Ringo that's just never going to die. Whenever I listen to The Beatles I think, man, if it weren't for Ringo this just wouldn't have happened. It ticks me off when people act like he was just along for the ride. If you can't see that he was crucial you just don't understand The Beatles, and I'll always stand by that!

I don't know for sure if Lennon said it, but it does sound like something he may have said as a joke or maybe on a bad day. Ringo had some songs he just killed (in a good way), but one of his greatest assets was understanding how the drums could support the song. He wasn't flashy, nor did he need to be. Hal wouldn't have looked as good in a mop-top haircut, and I don't know if he could sing or write (even as well as Ringo).

I love paul's solo stuff as well. I find them really melodic like " Live and let die"

Beach Boys - their later "decline" albums are spotty but they have a quaint charm about them, except when they turned into a nostalgia act

Beatles are overrated and overplayed

There's always a Beatles fan that comes out of the woodwork to revive a Beatles thread . I still prefer to, actually listen to half of an album at a time, or a whole album by the Beach Boys. The Beatles is like.."checking/reviewing homework"..or something in that order to me. I can only take/listen, to a song or two at any one given time by the Beatles.

BEACH BOYS

why would you pick the beach boys to compare to the Beatles instead of a more similar band like The Monkees?

that's because the Beatles/BB are not in the same league as the Monkees who are on an entirely other level

I guess you could compare the Monkees to the Beach Boys if that is your preference, but I just don't see the Monkees at the same level of talent as Brian Wilson, John Lennon, or Paul McCartney. But that's just my opinion. I see the Monkees as more of a Comedy Act, more so, than one of the great bands. I actually wouldn't even put the Monkees in the same category with the Byrds. Maybe, (The Monkees vs The Partridge Family)?
