Have you not heard Bohemian Rhapsody? :D

Thanks RJ,,,yes I listened to Bohemian Rhapsody when it was released, and it was totally unique compared with the other music of the day, I Never bought the album though,,,my friend was a huge Queen fan, he emigrated from England and introduced me to many cool new bands we never heard of before. As to the Prog label,,,when I was collecting music,,,Queen was considered Art Rock,,,the Prog distinction came about later, so when Boo Boo said he regretted putting Queen in the category that's what I was thinking.(Art-Rock, Acid-Rock, Psychedelic-Rock, Hard-Rock, Pop, Folk. Country, Classical, these were about all the choices available when I started out in the music world, things have grown a bit since then. Plus the small town where I lived was always a few months behind the current musical trends. Oh and I do Own a copy of it now:))

thedaytripper 07-08-2008 04:05 PM

Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time. they incorporate opera in with their music and make it sound as if you were in a theater. not to mention no one has been able to touch freddie's vocals yet. queen will live on to be one of my favourite bands

Double X 07-11-2008 12:00 PM

Pink Floyd for me. I prefer their early stuff but Animals, some WYWH and Wall are classic stuff. And DSOTM is solid too.

Wayfarer 07-22-2008 12:18 PM

How has nobody mentioned Can yet? :(

Oh my lord. They're not even on the poll!

Seltzer 11-06-2008 10:18 PM

I don't think Boo Boo was ever a huge fan of krautrock.

FireInCairo 11-06-2008 10:21 PM

Oh Kraftwerk!!!!
Give me those sweet synthetic beats and bleeps anyday

khfreek 11-07-2008 05:26 AM

0 for Yes? I mean, I didn't vote for them, but they were a close 2nd to Queen for me.

no love for Yes on these forums I tell ya :(

Big McLargeHuge 11-07-2008 05:55 AM

I love Yes.

They're third only to Pink Floyd and King Crimson in my mind, but they're all close.

Comus 11-07-2008 12:57 PM

I'm sorry I just can't chose, King Crimson stood out then I noticed Jethro Tull in the list and so on..

Astronomer 11-07-2008 08:15 PM

I picked Pink Floyd, but I also love Queen.

LeavingAgain 11-08-2008 10:44 AM

Pink Floyd, lot's of great ones listed though.

Anteater 11-08-2008 10:55 PM

I voted King Crimson, but I nearly went for Camel just on the merits of Andrew Latimer's godly guitar work on "Ice" from I Can See Your House From Here (or everything from Moonmadness and The Snow Goose for that matter). :afro:

lucifer_sam 11-08-2008 11:26 PM

I am so pissed I picked King Crimson over Mahavishnu Orchestra and VDGG. King Crimson is so vanilla compared to other great prog bands.

zekethefreak 11-15-2008 12:37 AM

I see all the argument over Queen, and they totally fit on the list. At least until The Game. A great album, but definitely the turning point towards a more Pop sound. Either way, they didn't get my vote. I love 'em, but I love Rush more... and Yes... and Pink Floyd... and, well, most of them. I think Return To Forever should be on there, as well. Those guys may have been instrumental, but I challenge you to find a more talented collective of musicians... ANYWHERE.

Guybrush 11-20-2008 10:54 AM

I just picked Jethro Tull because I like them at the moment. I could've gone with Pink Floyd or King Crimson.

Other than that, I'll say I think the list is missing some. For example, I would like to see Alan Parsons Project and possibly Soft Machine on the list, although I'm not sure if many would agree. :p

Edit :

Hmm, I'm a little confused about Kraftwerk. What are they doing on the list? Is it because of their first two albums (as Kraftwerk)?

Mahavishnu Orchestra kk?

Roygbiv 11-20-2008 11:46 AM

I realize I'm the only one who's going to pick Gentle Giant, and truth is they only had one amazing song that I recall, but if I picked Pink Floyd, I'd be like everyone else : D

Listen to Three Friends, the song (not the entire album necessarily).

DearJenny 11-20-2008 04:00 PM

Torn between Yes and Queen.

Went with Yes just because Rick Wakeman is the king of keyboards. Amazing.

Bella! 11-23-2008 09:03 AM

when you put up a list with Queen, Pink Floyd, and all the super greats, it is really hard to choose a single favorite.

I will go with Tull. Aqualung! yea, baby :)

Jason Rivers 11-23-2008 01:20 PM

Too tough

Well, I went with The Floyd as Echoes has got to be one of the greatest tracks ever. Noticed that Wishbone Ash never got a mention by anyone! I only mention it because Andy Powell is my cousin, whoops, shamefull name drop!

lucifer_sam 11-23-2008 04:32 PM

...because they're not progressive. At all.

Fall out boy fan 11-23-2008 04:47 PM

I picked Queen because i love their songs... Especially WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

Sigh

What is this? Real ignorance or just trolling?

And you bothered to feed the troll by quoting it. Nice.

I agree though: Queen really doesn't deserve to be on this poll in the first place, much less voted for when there's over a dozen better groups for those who have listened to enough progressive music to truly distinguish between the various groups and make a choice.

The Monkey 11-23-2008 05:51 PM

Never thought of Queen as prog :/

lucifer_sam 11-23-2008 06:01 PM

Because people don't like to think of mainstream arena rock as anything else other than soulless droll.

It's hard to tell. Queen certainly had songs which employed a variety of instruments and progressive arrangements, but they had a fondness for conventional rock structure. I haven't heard most of their output, so it's hard for me to make too bold of a generalization, but suffice to say that their unpopular material had a bit of progressive wankery.

See: "Mustapha" from Jazz (1978).

Not going to disagree with that statement, but Queen still isn't "prog" in comparison to, say, Yes or the Mashavishnu Orchestra is. Plenty of groups playing in the 70's were influenced by progressive rock even if they weren't part of that scene (Led Zeppelin, Badfinger, The Alan Parsons Project, etc), yet none of them are on the poll for some reason.

boo boo 11-28-2008 10:59 PM

Queen are not prog, I made a horrible mistake adding them to this poll.

They have used progressive elements but this is mostly found in their less popular material, this could be said for a lot of rock artists.

lucifer_sam 11-28-2008 11:22 PM

Wasn't Kansas on there at one point?

...sigh. I wish Mahavishnu Orchestra weren't as short-lived as John Maclaughlin made them to be. Birds of Fire and The Inner Mounting Flame sh*t over most other discographies.

Guybrush 11-29-2008 03:43 AM

I always thought the guitar was just slightly too far ahead in the mix on mounting flame. On many tracks, it concerns itself too much with being technically hard instead of good-sounding and is up in every other instruments face, making the overall sound slightly distractive.

I'm not saying I don't like it, though - everything but that is fine. I prefer Birds of Fire between the two, though.

Comus 11-29-2008 03:56 AM

I find that kind of mixing when it comes to do with guitars to be very very awesome :D

boo boo 11-30-2008 12:22 AM

Kansas bleh, they're one of those bands that really give prog a bad reputation.

It seems whenever people badmouth prog, Kansas is always one of the examples they use.

And when a third rate hick band that tried to dumb down the prog sound for the Lynyrd Skynyrd crowd is one of the bands people most associate with the genre, you know that's not a good thing.

American prog bands just suck, Dream Theater anybody? I know there's a few exceptions. But for the most part, stick with the brits.

seminsh 11-30-2008 12:28 AM

Queen. Of course, if they really are prog rock band...

boo boo 11-30-2008 12:33 AM

Queen were somewhat of a cross between pop, glam and prog. But overall I wouldn't call them a prog band, even though they obviously had prog influences.

Guybrush 11-30-2008 03:28 AM

As Anteater mentioned, if you're gonna include prog influenced, then why stop at Queen?

Nektar would've fit right in here, though.

Comus 11-30-2008 04:02 AM

Thing is boo boo wishes he hadn't included Queen, and considering how old the thread is, it's certainly forgivable.

Sister Ray 11-30-2008 10:28 PM

Roxy Music! Ferry and Eno... prog defined

Everyone needs this one in the collection:D

I really don't know what you're talking about. I've listened to most of what Mahavishnu Orchestra has produced and the lot of it doesn't scratch the surface of their debut. I like Birds of Fire, but admittedly it doesn't carry the same fervor all the way through as with the title track. The Inner Mounting Flame is what drove me to enjoy jazz fusion in the first place, and I personally feel it tops everything anyone else has done within the genre.
