Lets get it on

jas2k5 10-31-2005 11:10 AM

After reading that list im completely lost as to what prog means, could someone clear it up for me?

Btw i picked pink floyd

TheBig3 10-31-2005 11:50 AM

Queen????????? What?

Kashmir86 10-31-2005 12:50 PM

that is a big list, and some of those i dont even consider progressive really. pink floyd was THE progressive band of all time, and nobody since them have came close.
Love jethro tull to, i mean, how many other rock bands can you think of that play a flute in almost every song

id say the fusion of rock and opera is quite progressive for its time.

judas_priest 10-31-2005 02:26 PM

rush

sleepy jack 10-31-2005 02:44 PM

Queen.

Laces Out Dan! 10-31-2005 05:09 PM

I quiet enjoy queen...but im not sure why they are on a Prog List

Expletive Deleted 10-31-2005 05:35 PM

I'm not sure I agree with those choices, but oh well. I had trouble choosing between Roxy Music and Kraftwerk. I went with Roxy Music, because they released 5 perfect albums in a row between 1972 and 1975. The only bad thing you can really say about them between that period is that they were better with Brian Eno, but even without him they were still one of the best bands of the 70s.

I would like to see YES at least get a couple dude

Early Queen, everything from their debut had many progressive elements, then after News of the World they went for a more pop sound.

Merkaba 11-01-2005 02:15 AM

King Crimson. They prog my world.

Although I am a fan of Floyd and Kraftwerk also.

boo boo 11-01-2005 02:23 AM

I was gonna add some more options, but i didnt have enough time. :(

Merkaba 11-01-2005 02:34 AM

It's hard enough to choose as it is boo boo. Don't go pulling a polling muscle.

Ok. ;)

boo boo 11-05-2005 12:48 PM

Bump. ;)

soundgardenrox 11-05-2005 08:42 PM

mahavishnu orchestra owns, pink floyd is really good too and King Crimson.

pastor of muppets 11-06-2005 04:13 AM

so hard.. Floyd, Queen, Tull... all awesome..

in the end the floyd won out though...

dojo 11-06-2005 05:41 AM

Pink Floyd has more songs I like, so I chose them. Anyway .. all bands in the poll are good IMO :)

boo boo 11-07-2005 04:24 AM

I should have known that the more obscure bands would be ignored, does anyone here like Gentle Giant or Camel?, anybody?

Spikey 11-07-2005 05:06 AM

Pink Floyd don't play as much as you think live.. I watched them at live 8 and they weren't playing all the instruments there. Plus when the lead singer (guitar player)came off some sting instrument it kept playing even though he wasn't playing it..I only throw it out. I know they play live and are a GREAT band but I'm not sure how much they play live..Please don't get mad at me. PS Queen are my vote..:)

BurnTham 06-09-2008 12:26 AM

Gentle Giant was amazing, never heard anything else like them. I voted for ELP however, purely because Pirates is such an amazing epic, though it was really hard to choose just one.

As a side note, is it possible to consider Return to Forever prog rock alongside Mahavishnu Orchestra?

Definitely. Romantic Warrior is particularly proggish.

variatingmule 06-10-2008 04:39 PM

I just got into Gentle Giants, and I usually buy what my lousy record store has, which means that in 6 months, I've gotten 2... quite depressing.

But I definitely like Camel's sound, but haven't got anything by them so far. Anyone has an album title to suggest?

I know about all these bands except Gong. Seriously, who the heck is Gong?

I'd recommend starting out with Mirage or Moonmadness which are their best albums IMO. If you're after something more accessible to start with, go for the Snow Goose (all of the songs are 5 mins max).

Gong is a crazy Canterbury prog band rooted in psychedelia with lyrical topics including flying teapots, witches, prostitutes and invisible radio gnomes, sometimes in French. I love them!

Sounds right up my alley! Brilliant! You gotta song to suggest so I could pick something good off youtube?

edit: I'm guessing "Pot Head Pixie" is a way to go?

Dr_Rez 06-10-2008 05:29 PM

Well i have to go with PF, noone quite touches there level in individuality.

although i havnt really heard Jethro Tull, would like to though. Just not sure where to start.

Alfred 06-10-2008 05:29 PM

Easily Rush. Then Pink Floyd.

About the only old prog bands I don't find incredibly boring. Probably a blind statement though, seeing as I don't listen to much prog.

Aqualung is my favorite album from them and it's easly their most accessible. If you like it then you should check out their more progressive stuff like Thick as a Brick.

The whole Radio Gnome trilogy of albums is great - I started out with the Flying Teapot, and the title track from that was probably the first Gong song I heard. My favourite song of theirs is the Isle of Everywhere (instrumental).

boo boo 06-10-2008 08:09 PM

Love that track, it's like porn music from outer space.

Porn music from outer space... all right, I can see where you get that with the saxophones and all.

I kinda like those tracks, and didn't realise they were French. Or that French people made Prog (except for Harmonium, but they're diet-prog...) for that matter. I will persue the investigation, so thanks for the tip about Gong.

Predator 06-10-2008 10:19 PM

I would have voted for Queen, but I don't see them as prog. My vote goes to Rush.

I actually own that one on vinyl i shall give it a try tonight. :finger:

Yea i hit the wrong smiley. Keeping it there though us iv never used it before.

Ghostrider 06-12-2008 07:14 PM

A very impressive list of great bands, I voted for Jethro Tull, I just have always liked their totally distinctive sound and have every album up to Catfish Rising. Hey Rezz when you're done with Aqualung check out Songs From The Wood, I know some won't agree with me but it's my fave Tull album. Kind of like KC for me I like all of Tull's stuff, with the exception of the very latest releases which I haven't checked out yet.

variatingmule 06-12-2008 09:19 PM

BTW, Uriah Heep is missing from the poll

Demonoid 06-14-2008 01:28 AM

King Crimson
Although I've listened to pink floyd more, King Crimson gave me a better orgasm on first listen :p:

So are Magma, Caravan, Focus, Renaissance, Henry Cow, etc. I couldn't add everyone, should have added an "other" option, sorry. :(

Also I regret adding Queen.

Ghostrider 06-14-2008 08:16 AM

I was going to ask about "Queen" being included in this category but I just take it for granted that you know "Almost Everything..." about the prog/rock field.(Certainly way more than I know about this era of music,,,and I lived through it from the very beginning...LOL..!)
