The Inner Mounting Flame is what drove me to enjoy jazz fusion in the first place, and I personally feel it tops everything anyone else has done within the genre.

Have you heard Between Nothingness and Eternity? I didn't realise it was live until halfway through. :D

This poll's ranking falls in line with my views.

Some wouldn't consider them prog.

I do, but they certainly stand out from most prog, they're cool prog.

Anteater 12-09-2008 12:04 PM

Quiet Sun and The Cosmic Jokers ftw.

almauro 12-09-2008 01:04 PM

I vote for UK. No seriously, KC. Least deserving...Queen. At best, they were a hard rock band with prog. tendencies.

MetalChaos 12-09-2008 07:38 PM

Rush, They're extremely talented.

I like Queen, but they're proggy..not really.

Kitch 12-09-2008 11:33 PM

Wow no mention of a prog rock gem ELOY. God their music is amazing. I had to register on these forums just so a few people can discover this 70s prog rock band that somehow always ends up under the radar. Please tell me someone in here has heard of eloy?...if not youtube them right now

Guybrush 12-10-2008 04:12 AM

^I know Eloy!

Don't be too disheartened by that list. There's lots of bands that could be on that list that are not.

boo boo 12-10-2008 05:39 AM

Yeah ELOY are fanastic, but I stuck with just the more well known bands, ELOY aren't too way known, they're not super obscure or anything but, heh, I couldn't include everyone.

Should have added other though.

jackhammer 12-10-2008 06:22 AM

You still can booboo-you are a mod after all.

Kitch 12-10-2008 09:14 AM

ahhh relief. Anyways, these boards are pretty cool. I might stick around here....

Eloy are cool, but I find they burn out quickly, every now and then I will go on an eloy binge but it takes awhile to get back into them.

Rainard Jalen 12-13-2008 12:09 PM

ELO are better than ELOY. ELO are actually one of the best prog bands of the 70s

imdesigner 12-13-2008 12:11 PM

Pink Floyd duh.

Anteater 12-13-2008 02:24 PM

After going through Voice, I'm going to have to say Capability Brown is my new ****ing God.

Voice just edges out from scratch for me, I like their poppy tunes, but most prog heads hate from scratch.

I don't hate From Scratch at all, though I've noticed that among prog. communities. I do feel, however, that most of the hype surrounding the track Circumstances from Voice is well-deserved.

Comus 12-13-2008 04:44 PM

I have to agree all the hype that voice gets is completely deserved, however I feel from scratch is unfairly treated.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, no.

ELO are not prog, not even close, it's pop with electric violins, don't get confused.

gunnels 12-19-2008 05:15 PM

I need to start fighting my Rush Fanboyism...

scottsy 12-27-2008 11:49 PM

I went with Genesis - a long time favourite band of mine.

I have definite and set ideas why I'd choose this band over alot of prog rock bands from the 70's... one of them is that it never seemed like their music was vacant - it always seemed to have a purpose. Each part of a long suite or complicated piece seemed to serve the song well and draw it together as a cohesive statement. With a few notable exceptions, you never found yourself bored or meandering through a Genesis album from the Seventies - it all felt bristling, energetic snd meaningful...

I honestly find myself drifting away in the space and openness of a Floyd album - I need the engaging nautre of Genesis' music to carry me through my prog rock experience...

boo boo 12-29-2008 03:40 PM

I love Rush, but they're both underrated and overrated. Overrated because they seem to be the most popular prog band next to Floyd and I just don't think they touch Yes, Genesis, KC and the more lesser known bands. Plus Rush fanboys are super annoying.

Underrated because they do deserve a lot of credit they don't get, not only for their tremendous amount of talent, they were one of the few good North American prog bands, and they helped introduce a lot of people (including me) to prog.

scottsy 12-30-2008 09:09 PM

I never really learned anything at all about Rusn until I moved to the US - they really didn't have a huge profile in Australian circles, and I have barely heard any of their music, I must admit - all i know is that Geddy Lee's voices is kinda reedy / whiney...

Comus 01-02-2009 04:48 PM

Boo Boo, why don't you close the thread, and create it again with more, and more accurate poll options? What's the point in being a mod if you don't want to use the power?

boo boo 01-02-2009 07:06 PM

Eh ok, I'll do dat.

Guybrush 01-03-2009 05:23 AM

If you do, perhaps you should leave out Pink Floyd with a little explanation as to why in the OP. Then, the poll is more interesting and we can flame the fancypants who complain about PF not being in the list.

boo boo 01-03-2009 06:48 PM

Nah, I'll add Floyd, but what about Roxy Music?

That's a big grey area right there.

Comus 01-03-2009 06:58 PM

I would not add Roxy Music.

Molecules 01-03-2009 07:34 PM

never thought i'd say this but ELP are coming close to taking top spot just for 'Tarkus'...

yeah and why are Roxy Music there? Unless my ignorance of their early stuff is really missing something proggy

scottsy 01-03-2009 08:02 PM

Their early stuff is sorta offbeat, whackyand has a prog element to it, but I don't think its prog rock per se... Kinda like the Church - they have prog rock leanings, but they're more space rock / accoustic rock than prog...

Mase 01-03-2009 09:13 PM

All Those bands are very good. But Pink Floyd just wins it for me. Rush and Queen probably tie as second for me.

scottsy 01-03-2009 09:27 PM

Pink Floyd are, great, wonderful, even, but i am of the belief that are NOT the most interesting prog rock band - they were the most recognised for their work in that genre, and they can be given kudos for bringing recognition to prog, and perhaps turning listeners towards other even more complex, interesting bands of the era...

But Pink Floyd made a string of consistently great albums from Meddle to Animals - they rarely missed a beat.

boo boo 01-03-2009 11:33 PM

Floyd didn't popularize prog, at least not in it's heyday, they got popular around the time prog was already on it's deathbed. Yes was really the band that got prog into the mainstream.

However Floyd have certainly turned a lot of people towards prog since then.
