Space Shanty's a good album, but edging past immortal classic In The Land of Grey And Pink?

I'm actually feeling slightly offended.

It wasn't supposed to be that way, Tore. My vote had a lot to do with the thought that Khan was going to get stomped. I didn't want it to be an utter blowout.

I think it's more interesting when people are honest rather than trying to be "different" or just voting for what they think will be the underdog.

Yeah, I would stay away from "mercy votes". That said, everyone's opinion is of course welcome. Just make sure it is your honest opinion...

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my other post, but I actually did like the Khan album better, hence my (self decided, not based on pity) vote for the album. I like the spacey feel to the album better than Caravan's more Canterbury scene (more so than Khan's, that is) sound. Sorry to offend tore, though, who seems to be located at where the Caravan album takes place.

No worries, Frownland. I'm not seriously offended. Well, not much anyways. In the Land of Grey and Pink is one of my favourite albums from the Canterbury scene, but while it's way up there, it's not quite at the top of the list.

Something interesting about In the Land of Grey and Pink is that it's pretty much the Sinclairs' (Richard and cousin Dave) album whereas the earlier and most of the later material was written by Pye Hastings. In the Land of Grey and Pink is generally considered the band's finest hour and it's never been out of print since it was first released. I've sometimes wondered if that was a source of tension in the band, that the Sinclairs pretty much wrote the band's most successful album. They both left the band not long after.

Khan is good and and is interesting for including both Dave Stewart and Steve Hillage who played in Uriel (aka Arzachel) together, but I personally think I prefer Steve Hillage's first solo album (Fish Rising) more which includes songs that were intended for Khan's second album.

I've just listened to the Khan album and sure its an accomplished album which shows the potential of the band, but that is what it is potential, they never stuck around to record a follow-up. The Caravan album on the other hand is the finished product and one of the finest prog albums from the mid to early 1970s period, so no contest really.

Supposedly, Dave Stewart was asked to play on Space Shanty just before recording started so I guess he wasn't much of a member beforehand. Still, he did a pretty good job even if he didn't have much time to rehearse the material. I consider him to be one of the most interesting musicians from the Canterbury scene, particularly from his time in Hatfield and the North and National Health.
