Not familiar with this Jakko dude. I see that he was in a Crimson sorta tribute band though - does he sound like Wetton?

Does anyone know why King Crimson MP3 stuff is not available to purchase via Amazon? Is it a Fripp decision?

Yeah, he was in the 21st Century Schizoid Band and played on "A Scarcity of Miracles".
I wouldn't say he sounds like Wetton. Wetton, while not being a great singer (although still being a good one) in the technical sense, has a unique and heartfelt singing style and voice, while Jakko just sounds bland and generic.

I think Fripp wants DGMlive to be the sole distributor of Crimson mp3s.

Oriphiel 12-17-2014 02:55 PM

Dumb question: Is there an unofficial King Crimson thread?

Can't figure out how to purchase the full studio albums on that site. :banghead:

Has anyone been at the recent shows?
I'm curious as to what people think of the new line-up.
I haven't really heard anything yet, just some snippets. I'm not too happy about Jakko being in the band, he is a good musician, but I always found his singing really bland.
Although Belew on the other hand, despite the fact that I love him as a singer and guitarist, wouldn't really fit into the 70s sound the band seems to want to recreate or at least expand upon.

I saw the new line-up recently. The show was good but not quite what I was hoping for. Mostly on the heavier side of King Crimson, which I don't mind, but I actually found myself getting somewhat bored around halfway into it because of the way their approach to the songs sounded so similar in each number.

Are the three drummers effective or could just two (or just one Bill Bruford:)) be playing and nobody would notice the difference?
Also: How is Fripp's playing? He is almost 70 now after all.

Before the show I thought that having three drummers might be a bit of overkill, but they worked quite well together. I think two or just Bill Bruford would have worked just as well, though. Robert Fripp sounded fine to me. He seems to be playing as good as he always has.

I HOPE that this is not true.

I'm one of those people that likes to say, music is about the music only. I heard that Crimson King album when I was in high school (about 5 years ago...) and fell in love...

because of the pure listening enjoyment. It didn't matter to me how complicated, or simple, the arrangement really was. It was the feel.

Ironically, I also like some songs by 50 Cent. But I wouldn't think the social dichotomy between 50 Cent and Crimson King...would affect whether I enjoy listening to the song.

grindy 01-07-2015 12:29 PM

Any opinions on the ProjeKcts?
Recently I've been listening to them even more than to KC.
Some albums and tracks are a little unfocused/inconsistent, but I generally think of it as a great idea and great music.

grindy 01-18-2015 06:18 AM

I lol'd pretty damn hard. Never heard this.

Hypocrisy 03-08-2015 08:15 PM

Yeah, love King Crimson. Have to rate them in my all time top 5 progressive rock groups. Amazing musicianship. Need get a few more of their releases though . Right now I have Islands, Lark , Red , Lizard, Wake and Starless.

Filusia 04-19-2015 03:07 AM

Starless... what a perfection? :)

Neurotripsicks 04-21-2015 10:42 PM

The Night Watch happens to be my favorite song ever. In any genre. It's pure beauty and it's without a doubt my favorite song in general. John had such a great voice. Why he went to Asia is beyond me.

Well, UK was formed after a failed King Crimson re-union and then Crimson decided to make Yellow, Blue, and Red with Belew. Plus Asia was considered a pretty big arena thing for a while there so I'm sure he was raking in some good bucks.

Neurotripsicks 04-23-2015 11:55 AM

Well they are recording a new album as we speak. 8 members now I think?

Well to sell millions of records and sell out concerts, something he did for a while with Asia.

grindy 04-02-2016 06:22 AM

Has anybody checked out "Live In Toronto"?
I love it. They finally sound as powerful as such a line up should.
I even have to say that Jakko sounds pretty damn good on it.

As for Jakko's voice, I'm still having a hard time with his
...kind of... ummm..."forced" 70's sound(?) ... is about the
only way I can describe it. Still, a keeper tho. (Remember
to pick up your camera only when Tony picks his up!)

I thought Jakko sounded boring and generic on the first live release, but he's doing just fine here.
Although he still makes Epitaph into kind of a snoozefest.

And yeah, Fripp's "feud" with people taking pictures is always amusing.

Well, I'm pretty close to your age, rostasi, but while most believe the Wetton albums are best, my favorite line-up is Belew-Levin-Bruford joining Fripp in the '80's.

Having said that, precious little KC outwardly sucks IMO

I'd give my left arm for something like a King Crimson "Union"-styled studio album. Get together all the surviving baddasses since KC's inception back in the '68 and put together the best album since Discipline.

grindy 06-27-2018 01:00 PM

Bruford ftw

Top 20 Deserted Island discs. Got to see them after this was released. Tony Levin is simply one of the coolest mofo's to ever pick up an instrument. Seen him twice with Gabriel too. The other three guys weren't too shabby either.

Bruford is in my top 5 fave drummers on any given day.

I mean, the Close to the Edge album? Come on.

Heart of the Sunrise is simply a bonus.

King Crimson Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Surprise Release, 2019 Roll-Out Plan

Quote:

50 tracks, 1 per week featuring a new, rare or alternate take from across the KC catalogue and available via all major download and streaming services
Each track will be accompanied by a special spoken word introduction by King Crimson manager/producer David Singleton.
I think that this is a trial balloon for putting the rest of the KC catalogue on streaming services.

King John 03-21-2019 05:59 PM

I was there when it happened. His guitar tech André Cholmondeley started searching around for another whammy bar for his Parker Fly guitar. Adrian had quite a laugh about the whole thing.

King Crimson to Begin Streaming Entire Studio Catalog on June 10

A lot of albums have already hit Spotify.

Frownland 06-27-2019 01:45 PM

After much deliberation, Starless and Bible Black is my new favourite KC album. Except for Trio. Imagine having Bruford at your disposal and not taking advantage of that. smdh

Anteater 06-27-2019 09:31 PM

Revisited 2003's The Power To Believe recently. Flows a whole lot better than I remember, and Fripp's guitar work is extra jazzy.

I still think The First Day (with Fripp and Sylvian) is basically a King Crimson album for all intents and purposes, and I've been spending a lot of time with that one. Just grooves so well.

I'm surprised you prefer S&BB to Red, Frown. Or maybe not. It's an interesting one, maybe their strangest recording besides Larks Tongues In Aspic.

I prefer Damage, the live recording. Anyway, I also really like this line up and also consider it basically KC. Sylvian can be a bit boring, but he works really well in this context.

Also have Court of the Crimson King. After that album I liked a few of their tracks, but they went a bit to out there for me.

Tubeileh 10-14-2021 04:45 PM

I guess I do not quite understand them. I first listened to In the Court, and I really tried liking it, and it was very very interesting, but I felt like I was missing something at the same time...

Im thinking King Crimson featuring The Zappa Band would be great for the Super Bowl halftime show

I mean, since theyre touring and everything.

Yeah that's not happening lol.

You don't think there's enough crossover appeal?

Queen Boo 03-15-2022 06:11 PM

They're nowhere near big enough names for the Super Bowl and their music doesn't have much commercial appeal.

Maybe if they made a Super Bowl for nerds.

Frownland 03-15-2022 07:11 PM

Armand Hammer and 100 Gecs should collaborate for the next halftime show.
