The OFFICIAL King Crimson Thread

King crimson, one of the greast prog rock acts of all time, anybody but me like them?

Zygomycota 07-21-2005 12:59 AM

Hey good sir, I am an unbiased stranger, but I, in fact, LOVE King Crimson!
Time for a rim-shot, what do you say?

boo boo 09-19-2005 07:53 PM

It's about bloody time they get a thread, anyone else out there who acknowledges this great and underappreciated band?

The 50 Cent thread is up to 19 pages and this one hasn't even gotten a single reply yet. :(

fidelityfiend 09-20-2005 07:01 AM

King Crimson is waaaaaay over the heads of most of the posters here. In The Court Of The Crimson King is a monster. Their music is extremely technical and not very accessible truth be told. I'd guess that there are very few on this forum that could name you one song. Then again, I couldn't name one 50 Cent song. I guess we're even. Actually, we are likely smarter, better looking, and obviously have far better taste than most of these other peeps. :}

Well i always thought that one of the purposes of this forum was to introduce other people to bands and artists they haven't heard...Im just doing my part. :)

I have 4 of their albums on my computer and a lot of other Crimson stuff, anyone who wants to hear their stuff then just IM me.

Merkaba 09-20-2005 07:35 PM

They are so low key!
I try and download their stuff (not stealing just taste testing ;))
and I can hardly find a thing. I have heard them before but only briefly, I liked.

Yeah they are, anyway i have these 4 albums.

In the Court of the Crimson King
Lizard
Islands
Red

I also have some stuff from Starless and Bible Black, In the Wake of posidion, THRAK and Larks Tongues in Aspic.

jazzfromhell 09-20-2005 09:33 PM

All I've got is In the Court of the Crimson King, but I love it, 20th Century Schizoid Man is one of my favorite prog songs. I've thought about getting Larks Tongue in Aspic, but haven't gotten around to it. As for the five most technically skilled drummers in rock, you've got a solid list, especially if you mean in terms of complexity. However, for some straight up, old fashioned drum-busting, I'm a large fan of Bonham and the Moon. :D

boris jawaka 09-20-2005 10:00 PM

i havent got anything by them - what is the best album to get

im happy with highly technical music, theres plenty of that in Zappas music

jazzfromhell 09-20-2005 10:36 PM

Probably In the Court of the Crimson King, although I don't claim to know a ton about them. I think it's accepted as their classic.

The problem with King Crimson is they go from totally amazing to utterly pretentious.

Anyone who wants to check out the worst case of bloated prog rock only has to pick up their Larks Tongue In Aspic album.

Or every ELP album since Brain Sallad Surgery...Try Love Beach, if you dare. :D

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-22-2005 11:21 AM

Yeah but there comes a point when it gets ridiculous.

Rick Wakeman`s The 6 wives of Henry VIII on ice for example

Hahahaha...And to think he used to critisize Yes for being pretentious.

Yeah hes a weirdo, probably my favorite rock keyboardist though.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-22-2005 11:26 AM

I like Rick Wakeman , everytime he`s been on a TV show they always make fun of him although he does it to himself a lot more , and he takes it in good humour. Just don`t ask me to listen to any of his solo stuff.

Yeah, never was big on his solo work, but gotta love his work with Yes, his work on Fragile and Close to the Edge was nothing less than brillant, his work on Bowies Space Odditity album was not bad either.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-22-2005 11:29 AM

He did all Black Sabbaths keyboards too , I think he even had a hand in songwriting on their Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album

Let there be life!

King Crimson is an amazing band. In The Court of the Crimson King was an amazing album and In The Wake of Poseidon is pretty good too, especially tracks like Cat Food. I love that damn song. I have a bunch of their old stuff, and just recently I got The Power To Believe, which is pretty good too. Apparently they were on tour with Tool a while ago, it'd be cool to seem them regroup once Tool releases their new album.

Kashmir86 12-18-2005 02:58 AM

I can appreciate KC. I just recently have gotten more into them. I downloaded what I could of Starless and Bible black and Red, and i have most of the court of the crimson king. They are quite technical, but I don't mind that when it comes to prog. anyways. I am recently amazed by the title track on starless, simply a masterpiece, the ending, like the last minute or so is crazy. They sort of build their songs up to a climax in the same fashion tool does alot of times. I kind of compare them to a mixture of tool, pink floyd, and the moody blues. Very unique, and bruford is the **** on drums, and their bassist is quite good too forget his name though...

KC has had a variety of bassists...Tony Levin IMO is their best, but the ones you are thinking of would be John Wetton who played on Starless and Bible Black as well as Larks Tongue In Aspic and Red, and Greg Lake who Played on In The Court Of The Crimson King...Also, Peter Giles played on In The Wake Of Poseidon, Gordon Haskell played on Lizard, Boz Burrell played on Islands and Tony Levin has played on Discipline, Beat, Three Of A Perfect Pair and THRAK.

King Crimson have had many lineup changes, other than having gone through 6 bassists, they have also gone through 6 drummers, 5 vocalists, 2 saxophonists/flautists, 1 violinist and 4 session musicians...Also in 1982 they hired Adrian Belew as a second guitarist and he has been in the band ever since (also providing vocals) and Trey Gunn has played chapman stick and warr guitar on Crimsons last 3 studio albums, chapman and warr are unusual instruments that are in some ways a link between guitar and bass.

In short, Crimson only has one member who has appeared on every album, which is Robert Fripp.

That's crazy, I've never heard of a group that had that many changes in members. You've done your studying I can see...

Merkaba 12-18-2005 10:29 PM

Can an agreement be made on the best King Crimson Album?

I might have to make an investment if it's a unanimous decsion.

Laces Out Dan! 12-18-2005 11:18 PM

Lately ive been totally into King Crimson....They are one of the more progressive bands that i have ever heard...my favourite songs are Epitaph and Dinosaur...

Seltzer 12-18-2005 11:53 PM

Tony Levin is a great bassist.

Kashmir86 12-18-2005 11:59 PM

yeah, that's who I had in mind when I was talking about their bassist. Chris squire of Yes is also awesome on bass...

Laces Out Dan! 12-19-2005 12:00 AM

While we're talking about Bass this convo isnt complete without mentioning Geddy Lee

Kashmir86 12-19-2005 12:09 AM

or entwhistle...

Merkaba 12-19-2005 12:11 AM

Oh hell lets make a sub thread: Cool bass players.

That my friend, is the greatest question in the history of mankind.

IMO their best would probably be ITCOTCK, but Red, Lizard, Starless and Bible Black and THRAK are just as good...As far as good musicianship is concerned, then i would say THRAK...Fripp, Belew, Bruford, Gunn and Levin, you cant beat a lineup like that. :)

Islands is also great, and very underrated.

My favorite album is ITCOTCK, with starless being 2nd.

cardboard adolescent 12-19-2005 01:32 PM

I'm going to have to third In The Court of the Crimson King.

Even if it's not their best, it's a great place to start.

boo boo 12-19-2005 03:16 PM

Hey guys, check out People and VROOOM from THRAK, the bass will blow your ass away. :pimp:

Merkaba 12-19-2005 09:32 PM

Lovely. ITCOTKC sounds in high praise. I shall invest.
