Nea, I honestly don't give two ****s about Abacab, and I certainly wouldn't make a thread to bash either it, or you. I made this because an interesting Genesis discussion was developing in a thread in which it was in danger (that's a lot of "in"s, isn't it?) of taking over, and I thought well if people want to talk about my second-favourite band, let's make a thread. The fact that so many of my Bottom Top Ten come from that album only reflects how little I rate it, though there are songs on it I like, mostly on the first side.

Now can we push the Abacab war to one side and concentrate on the rest of the great Genesis music we have to talk about and enjoy, please?

Trollheart 01-17-2018 05:28 AM

It's time to reveal......
Trollheart's Genesis Top Ten
NUMBER ONE!!!!

"Supper's Ready" - Foxtrot (1972)
The very first prog epic (possibly even the first epic track) I ever heard. I could not believe that a song could last over twenty minutes and still not flag for one instant. I heard the live version first and it made me a fan of Genesis in a moment (well, twenty-three minutes and change) and a lifelong fan of prog rock in general. Indubitably unassailable.

As for the other end of things, well, it could only be one album, couldn't it?

Trollheart's Genesis Bottom Ten
Number One

"Whodunnit" - Abacab (1981)

What a completely pointless song. They must have thrown it together in about ten seconds. I think there are like four lines in the lyric, the chorus is ridiculous, the music is about as Genesis as Devo, and, well, it's just total crap from beginning to end. For me, the very nadir of Genesis's worst moments, and the point at which I seriously considered stopping listening to them. Whodunnit? You did, you bunch of twats! How could you?

rubber soul 01-17-2018 05:34 AM

This one's my least favorite. Maybe my all time worst video-period.

Troll, great pick for #1!

Check this out when you have a half hour to spare.

Right up there with Supper's Ready as far as epic prog goes.

Oh I know that one. Great track. Still go back and forth with Spock's Beard; have yet to hear an album I'd consider listening to all the way through more than once though. Octane is pretty solid, and V I think.

Trollheart 01-17-2018 11:57 AM

Since we're throwing out recs...

OccultHawk 01-17-2018 12:09 PM

I love the prog I liked as a kid but I never seem to enjoy discovering new prog stuff. I wonder if I have some kind of mental block or if there’s really not very much good prog.

Oh it's out there, believe me.

Chula Vista 01-17-2018 02:03 PM

Check out The Flower Kings.

Check out Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep. Maybe their most cohesive album. But I hear what you're saying.

Yeah I did hear it. I remember thinking it was good, but like most SB material it's "just" good and I don't feel any need to go back to it any time soon.

Trollheart 01-17-2018 05:24 PM

Hell, sure why not? Post your favourite epic prog tracks.

"Grendel" Marillion

"2112" Rush (2112)

"Once Around the World" It Bites (Once Around the World)

"A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" Van der Graaf Generator (Pawn Hearts)

"Comatose" Pendragon (Pure)

Chula Vista 01-17-2018 09:38 PM

Marillion - Bass/Vocals
Dream Theater - Drums/Vocals
Spock's Beard - Keys/Vocals
Flower Kings - Guitar/Vocals
Pain of Salvation - Guitar/Vocals

(Tries to kick some life back into the thread)

Working with Hypnosis, Genesis have had some incredible covers for their albums. Which ones do you rate highest? Of course, they don't have to be ones created by Thorgersson, but most of mine are. A few of mine:

I actually don’t like their album covers that much but I think Duke probably has the best. Lamb triggers my pleasure receptors because I know how delicious the Pavlov contents are

It probably thinks you're ugly. :)

I like the way it tells the tale (trick of) of the album, with each of the songs represented by a drawing. I also like the kind of Victorian way it's been created, and the fading yellow background only makes it more authentic. But that's me.

OccultHawk 01-19-2018 09:35 AM

Yeah

I know it’s meaningful it just doesn’t please my eyes

Shoulda said "Yes, but I was only in it to get directions as to how to get away from it."

You won't ruin it anyway; nobody who's into Genesis here will take you seriously, Keshslayer boy. :p:

Bought this back when Sherri was a baby.

Owned it for a couple of months before I made the connection because the album cover was laying on the floor next to this:

She got bitchy cause I was sexually selfish, so I had to start stimulating her clit to get my computer back.

Yeah, OK, whatever but please whatever you do, DO NOT talk about abacab. I mistakenly went down that road and was waylaid by [Mr McX from Ireland]. ;) (I guess you can tell who I am talking about without me mentioning any actual names.)

I already told him that the title track is one of the only Genesis songs I actually like and he flipped his ****.

You are so full of ****. You're the one who won't shut his yap about that album, and went so far as to call this a joke thread because it was created by an "Abacab-hater". Seriously: do you have ANYTHING to say about Genesis other than
AbacabAbacabAbacab
AbacabAbacabAbacab
AbacabAbacabAbacab
AbacabAbacabAbacab?
You haven't made a single Genesis-oriented contribution here other than to whine about how I hate Abacab. Some Genesis fan, indeed. At least Batty hates them and is not shy about saying it. He's honest. You're just bitter about that ****ing album, which I told you I don't know how many times I am sick of discussing with you, yet every time you get a chance you bring it up. Just shut up about it, yeah? I can have my opinion, you can have yours. You notice how I'm not constantly going on about how I don't believe you could love the album? I don't care. Get it into your head. There's so much more Genesis we can discuss without getting hung up on one crappy eighties pop album they spat out.
