I would agree with you on all points except the calling them progressive. Punk is reressive, if anything.

'...punk is similar to what rock-n-roll used to be.' Yes I agree with that. Punk is rock-n-roll in a world full of boring 'rock music.' Punk was just about reviving that 1950s rock-n-roll attitude!

Marlon Brando as biker Johnny in a 1950s movie was asked 'what are you rebelling against Johnny?' 'What've you got?' he answered. Same 'tude, different era.

Or eras.

At this point punk's at least 35 years old, and older still if you trace roots to 60's garage and '50's rockers. Which is perfectly valid.

Punk is about catharsis too. All that angst and anger and passion that's roiling inside you, especially as a young person; a great punk record or show can be a release valve for all that pent-up junk. I can and do still listen to my old punk records, but it's much more with a sense of nostalgia and fun than it was when I was 18 and every word and song meant the whole world to me. It was such a perfectly visceral and intensely personal experience. I don't know what I would have done without it. Viva Punk Rock!

Great post. Although, I agree with most of the classifications in this post, I gotta say, Bad Religion isn't one of them. I'd say they should be classified as Anarcho Punk as apposed to Pop Punk. The earlier stuff was as anti-establishment punk as it gets.

why would they be Anarcho? I do not see them preaching much in the way of anarchy.

They were melodic hardcore as well, not pop punk.

P.s. *opposed

Punk is basically just rock n roll, but who really cares??

Anyway, if you have not heard Ramones' first five albums, you don't know anything about punk at all. Or about music, as well.

I love the Ramones - but few other punk groups. This has to do with the fact that I only like music with really good melodies. As I understand it a great deal of punk music is too "noisy" - in the sense of insufficiently melodic.
