Yes you got a ticket for the Carling Academy, or yes there's a Manchester gig?

Theyre a good band but not a great one in my opinion. They used to have something of Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band about them but now its like this danceable beat driven thing. Im not really a fan, I just like the odd song here and there. Definitely overrated. Theyre kind of an archetypal indie band that gets written about in all the right places and held aloft by all the right people but I think the critical reverence and the legacy thats been put in place is very out of step with the actual quality and consistency of their output.

Plus theyre just a dull live band. No personality at all. Its just a jukebox scenario and that doesnt interest me.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-26-2007 06:10 PM

There are loads of criticisms you could level at The Fall

I would have thought the LAST thing you could criticise them for is no personality. Mark E Smith has more personality in his fingernail than some bands do in their entire bodies.

What I mean is that he doesnt interract with his audience.

What you want him to do blow you a kiss?

He could at least say hello, even the Black Keys mustered that and they were about as interesting as Ronseal.

Kevorkian Logic 01-30-2007 06:11 AM

does anyone know why they switch around members so often?

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-30-2007 09:52 AM

The Fall stopped being a proper band before the first album even came out.
He basically got his girlfriend Kay Carroll to become the bands manager which rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way and eventually the original members of the band left.Tony Friel joined a couple of bands and then left the music industry. Martin Bramah & Una Baines went off to form Blue Orchids leaving Mark E Smith to hire & fire whoever he pleased.
He`s often said he treats the band like a football squad and for every band member he has about 3 people lined up to replace them.I guess it`s a combination of wanting to keep things fresh , the other members of the band are heavily involved with the writing process it`s not like it`s Mark E Smith telling everybody what to play. They write the songs & Mark E Smith puts his stamp on them.
Also he`s not the easiest person in the world to get on with , in fact the number of people who were in the Fall who have had nervous breakdowns is incredible.

sleepy jack 01-30-2007 09:56 AM

I played in the Fall once.

Apparently its because Mark E Smith is an ******* and nobody can put up with him for more than a couple of tours.

You don`t understand it because you have not really listened to them properly you have to look deep into the lyrics of all 27 albums to understand where they`re coming from.

Oh i`m sorry , I seem to have thought I was a Tool fan just then.

Lucky!

I've been listening to Peverted by Language and Hex Enduction Hour a lot recently. I like both a lot, more so HEH but both are great. I'm gonna make it a mission to hear all of their albums.

Sparky 03-08-2007 02:55 PM

i wish i was able to understand mark e smith in interviews, i was trying to watch a documentary on them, but whenever they cut to a clip of him i had to keep rewinding. Its just too hard.

Im better off reading text interviews with him.

You`ll be wanting Room To Live next , seeing it was recorded slap bang in the middle of those 2 albums.

It`s one of the very few Fall albums I don`t own :(

A lot of people say that about Mark E Smith but personally being a northerner myself I pick up most of what he says.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-10-2007 10:20 AM

I can understand what he`s saying , but as i`m not a northener I put it down to experience talking to drunks :o:

The Culture Show, BBC2, 31 March

A blurb from the BBC:

Another packed line up on The Culture show, presented by Lauren Laverne.

Stewart Lee marks the 50th birthday of Mark E. Smith of the Fall. A legion of surprising Fall fans including Frank Skinner, Grayson Perry and dancer Michael Clark join in the tribute to this legendarily difficult Smith who has survived 30 years and countless different line-ups of the Fall, and still seems to be standing.
:D

I'm watching this

Here's a song by Von Sudenfed, a collaboration between Mouse on Mars and Mark E. Smith. It's pretty interesting, in an odd techno kind of way, pretty enjoyable too. I think their first release is slated to come out this month at some point:

and here's some more:

Thats pretty good stuff. I'm getting the album for sure.

Anyway.....

Divine comedy role for the Fall's lord of misrule

The Fall frontman Mark E Smith is to appear as Jesus on BBC3. Given his history of acting up, he should get his own show.

We've all heard that the Lord moves in mysterious ways, and now the latest word is that Jesus will appear in the ravaged form of Mark E Smith in the sitcom Ideal on BBC 3 at 10.30pm on May 8th.
The Saviour, aka the Fall's frontman, is due to pay small-time dope-dealer Moz's grimy bedsit a visit, and punish Johnny Vegas's character's meaningless existence with some divine retribution.

:D

right-track 05-04-2007 05:53 PM

Ideal on BBC 3 at 10.30pm on May 8th.

White Lies 05-05-2007 01:07 PM
