The Fall
Anyone heard of these guys? Obviously, a lot of you have, since I've seen them mentioned before. In my opinion, one of the greatest post-punk bands of all time, a lot like Wire except more rockin'.
They're led by Mark E. Smith, who I think has been the only constant band member since they started in '77 (they're still at it.) They released Fall Heads Roll last year, which I haven't heard but I've heard good things about it. Personally, I'm a big fan of their earlier stuff, songs like Hip Priest or Rowche Rumble really do it for me. A lot of 80/90's bands were big fans of The Fall, including Pavement and Sonic Youth (who did a bunch of crappy covers at one point.) I don't really know what else to say, they've released an inordinate amount of studio albums, and if you want to hear some recent live stuff, just go here. |
my friends brother popped a cd of theirs in once when i was at his house. not sure which cd it was though. i couldnt stand it the first time i heard it, but ive checked some of their stuff out since then and ive actually grown to like some of it. touch sensitive is the only song by them i have on my mp3 player...so i guess id have to say thats my favorite song by them. their style had to grow on me though...because when i heard them for the first time i hated their music.
any other recommendations as to songs i should download? |
Rowche Rumble
Repetition Industrial Estate Totally Wired Hip Priest C.R.E.E.P. The Classical Touch Sensitive is more later-era Fall, so it's not quite as... jagged... as these songs. Personally, I prefer the earlier songs since they've got more of a punk feel. |
alright. great, ill try to check those out. ive also got CREEP on my computer, i dont know why its not on my mp3 player but its a good song.
|
I like The Fall but compared to some other post punk bands they get boring alot quicker. Still a quality band though.
|
They're a cool band, and I have a lot of respect for the kind of music they make, but I've never been able to tap into it as much as I'd like to. The basis of their music appeals to me, it's just never quite worked, not sure why. Still pretty good, though.
|
it may be you, cardboard adolescent, that i asked this before, but do the talking heads fit in with the "post punk" genre? the fall seem to have somewhat of a similar style about them.
|
If you were to ask me, I wouldn't say so. I'd say more new wave-ish, although they're kind of a tough band to classify.

The Fall have to be my favourite band that's sung a song about a 19th centuary Queen of England. (Victoria... Catchy as hell)

I recently downloaded a Sonic Youth EP thingy, called "4 Tunna Brix". It's them covering 4 songs by The Fall, and it's...really bad tbh. Of course I'm not judging The Fall by that, but man is it terrible. Has anyone heard this? |

I`m not sure exactly but I think they recorded it after he said he thought Sonic Youth were sh*t  |
Yeah, I think I mentioned it in the first post.
Definetely don't judge the Fall by that. They're great. |

It's unusual for a man to control so much of his material as Mark E Smith. |
i just admire how, despite the fact you can hear and sense the level of aggression and fire he has in him, he manages to control it and make a really engaging song of it.
|
It's not just that...it's his ability to hit the nail on the head, in such a down to earth way.
Simplicity. |
The thing about the Fall is the way they suck you in.
I first heard them around 1992 & hated them. Then around the time Witch Trials was being remastered i listened to it & picked up on it.So I bought all the reissues as they came out & probably only liked 3 or 4 songs from each one. But once you listen to those songs you go back & you hear something that you like about another & then another & another. When I bought that Peel session box set a couple of years ago I probably only liked about one discs worth of material on it , now I can listen to all 6 discs without skipping a single song. |
I very rarely mention The Fall on these forums, because like with Northern Soul...I don't expect others to "get it".
Both (on a personal level) reside outside of what is considered 'popular music'...but for very different reasons. |
